  1. When I click on "manage" I get The selected service does not exist as an installed service It seems to run regular programs OK, but not anything system related. Wow. Sounds pretty broken. Do you have the windows install disc available? If not, I can probably put up an image of it for you to create a bootable USB stick. I'd use that to try and repair the windows install. If that doesn't work, a reinstall is probably the next option unless a professional can get a look at it.
  2. I'm pretty certain that if she moved then she would be able to find a place where she wouldn't hear jump plane noise, therefore I'm doubtful as to her qualifier of 'inescapable'... QED.
  3. There are a few options. Checking the Event log is a good one. Using the original windows disk to repair the installation is another decent starting point. Just in case it's related to a hardware device, right click on the My Computer in your start menu, and select Properties. Then click on Device Manager in the top left. See if any of the devices in the new window have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. The other thing which might help narrow down where the problem is is to perform a clean boot and see if the problem is still there: 1. Click Start, and type msconfig into the search bar and hit enter. The System Configuration Utility will appear. 2. In the General tab, click Selective Startup. 3. Uncheck the processing options that are listed below Selective Startup except "Load System Services." 4. Click Apply, and then click Close. 5. Restart the computer and test if you've still got a problem. If not, then it's not a windows error - it's a problem either with a driver or a secondary service.
  4. Personally, these videos haven't affected me at all - at least not in my outlook. They were definitely unpleasant to watch.... but as a society we sometimes choose to be shielded to some of the unpleasant realities of the world we live in. Some people are perfectly happy to eat chicken until they see the video of a battery farm. Some people are perfectly happy to use cosmetics until they see a video of how those cosmetics are tested on animals. Some people are perfectly happy with their government going to war until they start to see videos of the torture and killing of civilians that happens. I try to make myself aware of the realities of all of these types of situations so that I can make informed decisions. Some people prefer not to know... Personally I did some pretty distasteful things to rodents as part of one of my degrees. I hope that I advanced the treatment of Parkinsons just a tiny bit to make it worthwhile. I see this as a similar issue - extremely distressing to watch (which is why it's not a TV show), but the choice to do it is absolutely necessary. I watch the videos to remind myself that it may be upsetting, but that it's really nothing to do with me - the choice to abort a foetus is entirely the parents. Some people may call that callous and uncaring. I call people who think they should interfere arrogant and controlling. C'est la vie. Once I remember that, then for me it's purely a case of not wasting the biological samples which may be used to further treatment and medical causes. It's not pleasant and shouldn't be celebrated. But it's absolutely their right and we should make the effort to make the most out of the situation. This is an extremely difficult topic, which is one of the reasons my previous posts were targeted solely on (what I see) as the legal flaws in Rushmc's arguments.
  5. Do I really need to explain this to you or are you being deliberately obtuse? Of course they want to make as much money as possible. That lets them expand their business and provide more of their services. I'd do the same. If one business model is more profitable than another then I'd change it. I'd also alter it from client to client depending on their needs. That Planned Parenthood is trying to make profit does not make them bad. It doesn't make what they're doing illegal. Do remember also that you're watching a highly edited video, released by people with an agenda. Try and keep some skepticism when taking direct quotes from it - it'd be easy to take them out of context.
  6. I'm not sure about credit unions. Personally I think the entire banking industry is about as corrupt as it gets... Even large banks that aren't non-profit changed their charter to a Sub-S corporation model... why? To avoid paying corporate income tax. There seems to be an interesting article about credit union tax status here: http://thefinancialbrand.com/16153/why-credit-unions-have-a-tax-exemption/
  7. Using a crossbow is hugely inefficient. The US could sell miniguns and landmines to Zimbabwe to decrease the time to recoup the money and benefit the US economy into the bargain.
  8. As a complete aside - the company my wife works for uses foetal cells (forskin cells to be specific!) in their work. They are currently 3D printing viable organs - liver, skin, corneas, heart valves etc. using that material. At the moment the organs are used for pharmaceutical testing to save the animals, but will (hopefully) one day be used to grow organs for burn victims, transplant patients etc. It's all super cool.
  9. You still don't get it. If she pays herself a salary of $1m a year, and uses that money to buy a Lamborghini that is LEGAL. If she uses the excess revenue to give herself a bonus or dividends and then buys a Lamborghini, that is ILLEGAL. Your personal opinions on how much she should be paid, what she should spend her money on and where that money comes from is entirely irrelevant. You're extremely emotionally invested in this and are struggling to dissociate the legal concerns you have with the moral and ethical ones. The former are a problem for all of us. The latter are just your problem. Doctors, orderlies, janitors, surgeries, equipment, post-op care, storage and transport, licensing fees, buildings, education, advertising... I could think of a dozen more. I worked on the design of a small medical facility last year. That was well over $100m. It's a surgical operation so it has the same types of expenditure as a hospital would.
  10. Remove non-profit as a tax-entity entirely and tax all of the above organizations equally. We'd kill the budget deficit in about 2 years from the religious profits!
  11. The bit that makes me chuckle is that Rushmc seems to think that the IRS have somehow 'missed' this openly declared excess revenue of $85m and he's discovered some conspiracy.... The IRS been bitching at me for ages for $3 that they think I owe them from last year. I'm pretty sure they'd be the first ones to jump on Planned Parenthood if they were breaking their nonprofit status for $85m!
  12. $85 million in exess revenues is what they (PP) called it in their own finanicial report Not profit? It is an abortion business That gets HUGE gov tax dollars All I want is two things A fed investigation so make sure they are not selling for profit which is breaking fed law and is a fellony And Remove our tax dollars from going to this corp business that is PP You still don't understand how Not-for-Profit organizations work, or how they have to report. You seem to think that 'nonprofit' automatically means that legally it cannot earn profits. That's not the case. In fact, any business needs to earn profits to withstand financial fluctuations, inflation, change in demand etc... What nonprofit means is that any excess revenue is used to develop its own activities or pay its employees. It's not allowed to pay dividends, for example. Any excess after that has to be spent on other 'charitable' expenses. So it could make $100m in excess revenue, use $50m to develop itself and pay its employees and then give the rest to Goodwill and it would classify as 'nonprofit'. If you think Planned Parenthood are using those monies to give itself lavish parties, or enrich the bank accounts of the owners then yes - I agree that would be illegal. There's no evidence of that, so why waste more taxpayer money on an investigation?
  13. Wait, what? Win 7 isn't obsolete yet. It's still supported.
  14. No. You're a right-wing nutjob because you make everything about right vs left wing politics. Everything.
  15. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33695872 I'm all for responsible hunting and enjoy cooking what my hunter friends kill. I also understand that sometimes it's necessary to kill wildlife in order to protect human life or agriculture. This fucking nimrod however, is a both a neanderthal and a cretin. There's no usage of the meat or point to the killing. He decided he wanted to go an kill a lion just so he could say he did. Fuck you, buddy. I hope they extradite you and put you in a Zimbabwean prison for a while.
  16. Well there's your problem. I haven't had a single problem with my XP system since Microsucks stopped "supporting" it. But from memory you have at least 2 huge vulnerabilities in your system as a result. Using an obsolete OS for storing any important data is a bad idea. It will look all good until it completely isn't - By then it's too late. I liked XP. I now like Win 7 and have no need to move to win 10. If you domove, read this article about making sure your wireless password isn't sharing itself with your facebook friends and outlook contacts... social network integration can fuck right off. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/28/windows-10-wifi-sharing/#more-304239
  17. This is a great example of how a little information can be more dangerous than no information at all. I'm not necessarily suggesting it in the context of this thread - there's a library of advice up there for the OP to draw on, but I've heard very similar stuff said in the bar after a days jumping with no further explanation... One of the responsibilities we have as experienced jumpers is to tailor the advice we are giving to the experience of the people receiving it.
  18. Someone with some clout needs to educate citizens on their responsibility of voting and the power they have - not just to elect an asshole, but to demand a decent representative. I don't know whether that's a SNL bit, or a FOX & CNN combined segment, but somehow the people who actually get through to voters (the media celebrities) need to tell people that they don't need to stand for a choice between a turd sandwich and a giant douche. And they need to keep telling people that... Bring on some public content to balance the bullshit political advertising. The biggest problem I have is that I don't think there's a single candidate who seriously thinks the job is to actually represent the people. Everyone is in it for a personal power trip and the acclaim of their own party and only a giant 'Fuck you' to ALL parties will get the message across that this is unacceptable.
  19. I've been outraged at hipsters for years...
  20. One I played with last weekend was the Glock 41. I was surprised how light it was and the small recoil it produced while still putting big holes in the targets.
  21. Psychological evaluations for everyone currently owning a gun or purchasing a firearm. Evaluations to be redone on a yearly basis. The cost for said evaluation is part of the license to own a gun. No right to bear arms for those with weapons misdemeanors in their past. It may not stop 'em all, but it'd catch some. And that's better than none. Let's get this straight. Your (and Anvil's) answer is 'do nothing unless a perfect answer can be found.' It's disingenuous to say the least - you know full well that there is no single absolute answer.
  22. They also all have vowels in their place names. And that argument makes about as much sense as yours. There will ALWAYS be harder and softer targets. Simply arming everyone doesn't stop incidents as you'd seem to suggest. Armed military members didn't stop the IRA from blowing up police checkpoints and bases in Ireland for example. Unless you want to create a totally militarized police state where everyone is paranoid AND armed AND monitored by the government this isn't a problem that you fix just by throwing more guns at it.
  23. I think part of the problem is that we're looking to a solution to everything at once. There are many facets to the problem. Even if we only tighten up on 1 out of the 5 you just listed, surely that's better than doing nothing and saying 'Can't be fixed!'? I think a holistic solution would cause more issues (given the complex nature of society) than a step-wise one would. Pick the biggest / easiest problem to solve and try to fix that one first. Then in a few years, try for the next...
  24. I never said you should be locked up. But yes. You should be fined and have your right to purchase or own a firearm revoked for a period of time (IMO). You've broken the law. Whether you agree with it or not is a moot point. You've proven you can't be trusted.
  25. How many die in vehicles? Is that number acceptable to you? Derek V But we pass laws to try and make vehicles safer. Pedestrian-friendly materials and shapes. Seat-belts. Crumple zones. Speed limits. The list goes on and on... We literally do nothing, not even have constructive discussions when American civilians kill other American civilians. JohnnyMarko hit the nail on the head earlier in the thread. The next headline will read: 'X number dead in school / shopping mall / restaurant shooting' and the seemingly correct response from the US as a nation is 'Nothing to see here. Business as usual. Carry on...'
