  1. This comparison comes up quite alot, have you done a search or read the reviews in the gear section? I've owned 2 Spectres and a Sabre2. The Spectres had better (more consistent) openings but the Sabre2 was more fun to fly and landed much better. None of them opened hard and I wear a camera on 99% of my jumps. I think you'd be happy with either. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  2. From part 1: From part 2: Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  3. There was an interesting article about it in this weekend's Guardian, including an explanation of the red string. Part 1 Part 2 In summary: it sounds dodgy. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  4. This may be a high profile object but how is all this site naming suddenly ok? Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  5. No direct control. 2 wraps on the indirect. 36 inch zp pc, non-vented. Large mesh slider. Very scared. Good ground rush. Good coffee. Hot chicks in the café. Muchos BASE. Fair point, I've never jumped anything else so no basis for comparison. I wonder what difference each individual's terminal velocity makes? I'm pretty floaty in a track. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  6. I just did my first terminal jumps (12 - 15 sec delays) on my 265 MDV. First jump with about 6 rolls in the nose really suprised me with how soft the opening was. Second jump with 3 rolls was definately quicker but still quite comfortable. Not a massive sample to draw conclusions from but I was very happy. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com

    Being a safe BASE jumper

I started this thread over a year ago (check the date of the first post), before I started jumping, so it's quite interesting to read it back now that I have a couple of jumps. I started jumping on the premise that I could have a direct and significant influence on my odds of survival in this sport. 61 jumps on and largely I still believe that's the case. What I think I realise better now than I did a year ago is that being a safe jumper may not be enough to save you. I had a friend who I considered a real role model in the considered and thoughtful way he approached and performed his jumps - and it didn't save him . Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  9. There's a rigging course in Germany listed in the BPA diary. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  10. swooping.co.uk is a good place to start, although it doesn't look like it's been updated for a while. It's my impression that the UK swooping scene has been hampered by the BPA's (and dropzone's?) reluctance to get involved in sanctioning/organising what they perceive as a dangerous event. A couple of the guys involved (Brian Vacher, Chris Lynch, Gary Wainwright) are occasional posters on dz.com, maybe they'll chip in. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com

  12. The 29 mph figure is the vertical speed at which the Cypres is triggered. AADs (like the Cypres) work by calculating your vertical speed. The 25 mph figure was probably quoted to you as your canopy's horizontal airspeed. Furthermore, that 25 mph (if it was the airspeed) is uneffected by whether you're going up or down wind but that's been covered here many, many times. Do a search for "airspeed groundspeed". 13. That's pretty interesting. Did you notice it more at certain delays? Silder up or down? Do you think it could be a common feature of all 5-line canopies, not just the Ace and BJ? Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  14. What's (special about) HMA 2? Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  15. I just started climbing at The Warehouse, conveniently located about a 10 minute walk from my house. Just doing top roping stuff at the moment but I'm really loving it. It's a great sport for gear heads . There seem to be about a million grading systems out there so I don't really know what this means but I can do a handful of the 6a's. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  16. I have to say, that's pretty cool. I bet that kid would be well stoked to find out that BASE jumpers had read it and liked it. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  17. Last I heard Aeroydyne weren't happy with it, so they pulled it and have started all over again. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  18. What's up with arm strain?! Could you fly your S3 to its maximum efficiency for 5 minutes? No? That's arm strain. To me it feels equivalent to holding weights with my arms straight out from my sides. I'm a scrawny wuss. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com

    Man UP!!!!!!!!

I thought the B Team posts were pretty good but that one's the funniest of the lot. I don't see much honourable behaviour going on here. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com

    "The Sorcerer"

Can't we do that already? How much altitude does it take for a static lined canopy to open? That's essentially what the skyhook does, right? It sounds like we're talking about "open canopy" vs "flying canopy". The skyhook may well open a canopy in 100 ft but I imagine its descent rate at that point is no safer than the descent rate of a static lined canopy 100 ft below the exit point. Or am I well off the mark? Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  21. How do you know what happened has anything to do with the specific design of this canopy? Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  22. I just started jumping a pair of Adidas Elevation with prescription inserts and they're great. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
  23. Have you checked out the dz.com reviews? The majority of my jumps (including AFF) have been at Langar. I like it. We just got a 2nd grand caravan so we have 2 turbines all year round. They just carpeted the new hangar so we can pack in there. Everyone's pretty friendly, plenty of groups to join in whatever jumping you're in to. Facilities are a bit basic. The showers work but they're really not great. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com

    Canopy glide ratio

It's very easy to work out on a nil wind day: (1) At X feet note where you are over the ground. (2) Fly in a straight line until landing, assuming there's nothing in the way. Leave the brakes alone. (3) If you are a wimp you may flare for landing but realise this will skew the data somewhat. (4) Measure the distance Y between where you landed and the point you noted earlier (1) (5) Your glide ratio is Y/X. For example if you cover 1000 ft horizontally from 1000 ft up then your glide ratio is 1:1. If you cover 1500 ft from 500 ft up your glide ratio is 3:1. Gus OutpatientsOnline.com
