And the NASADAQ is at half the level it was in 2000. i chose the Sept 2001 mark since that already factored in most of the usual excuses (9/11, .com-bubble, Clinton in general, ...) But if you want to factor in 9/11, you have to take the price after 9/11 took full effect on the markets. The better comparison would be with Oct 4, 2002, when the S&P was at 800. It's still up 66% since then. None of these numbers mean anything unless the purchasing power of the $US is accounted for. Oil in 2001 - $27/bbl Oil in 2008 - $103/bbl 1 Euro in 2001 - $0.94 1 Euro in 2008 - $1.52 Bush's policies, both foreign and domestic, have been an unmitigated economic disaster Who's defending Bush? Jeez, I thought I was I just pointing out the appropriate economic low point to compare against.

NPR reported this morning that the 'leak' came via the Drudge report as well. (This morning) Drudge appears to link back to UK Sun, UK Observor, and Washington Post articles. This UK Reuters article also suggests that the Ministry of Defense is confirming Drudge as the 'leak.' Does anyone else have confirmation of the source? Second confirmation the source was Drudge: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/29/world/europe/29harry.html

Which Branch of Federal Government Passes the Budget?
likearock replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
The fact that the president has veto power gives him a significant role in passing the budget, more so than any individual member of congress. -
Apologies accepted. And yes, the 1st Amendment stuff was a minor part of my post, which was primarily concerned with the insanity of allowing the general public to carry a gun into a courthouse.

Let's take another example. A terrorist goes on trial. Can you honestly say its a good idea to ditch the metal detector at that court room? Cops or no cops, if a few of his friends jump up with 9mms in their hands, there's going to be a lot of carnage. A little bit like the 1st Amendment defenders who see their rights eroded in the era of global terrorism.

Courthouses? Wouldn't that make it a little easy for criminals/gangsters/druglords to have their posses "influence" their escape?

How about you putting some numbers down, Mike?

Yeah, a real spirit of democracy flows through her. You think she'd be so keen to include those votes if Obama had the majority? You mean like when she supported the lawsuit to shut down the Nevada caucuses after the service unions endorsed Obama? She wanted to disenfranchise those voters despite the plan having been well known in advance, and wants to "re-enfranchise" these voters, despite the plan having been well known in advance. Thanks, I had forgotten about Nevada. To be honest, up until recently I was kind of sympathetic to Clinton. But this is just low class, blatant hypocrisy to the extreme. How can anyone trust a person who publicly agrees to the DNC ruling against Michigan and Florida and then acts as if it never happened? Did she think we wouldn't notice?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/29/fl.primary.dems/index.html Looks like she's grasping at straws after the big Kennedy endorsements for Obama. Pathetic.

I had about 7, but I just doubled that during the holiday boogie at Eloy. Let's hope they open that Xanadu tunnel soon!

Five and Ten is Woolworth's?

Indeed. And there is a risk in doing that. What if they get busted making a buy? That can cause problems at work, and even with the family. There's also a risk in skydiving, isn't there? Aren't we all playing the risk/reward game? Yet you make this point about pot and not skydiving simply because one is legal and the other is not. Isn't that a bit sheeplike?

Oxymoron sighting. Didn't used to be.
-
That's somewhat surprising for you to say, considering the long legacy of Christian pacifism. Do you think it's moronic to be against all war?
-
I don't disagree with that. However, your concern seemed to be about setting a precedent and I don't believe that precedent is a factor in civil cases as it is in criminal. I'd like to hear a lawyer's take on this..
-
Maybe I missed something but wasn't this a civil case? In a criminal case you might be concerned about precedent but in a civil case anyone can bring a lawsuit and win it. All they need is the sympathy of the jury.

Funny, to me the best way to show support for the military is to get them out of Iraq so they can stop dying in the numbers they have been dying. Compared to that, everything else is pretty minor. Supporters of the war are content to keep the carnage as it is. It's they who are anti-military, not the opponents. Your opinion and, like everyone else's, worth what was paid to hear it. Doesn't sound like you have any reply to the substance of my statement. I'm sorry - I didn't realize I had to have a reply to an opinion. Is it an opinion that over 3000 American soldiers in Iraq have died and continue to die at an unacceptable rate?

You mean like John Kerry's explanation after his "joke" about going to college rather than Iraq? Same exact situation: the original words speak for themselves and no amount of "explanation" can make them right.

Nope, the 'surge' sure isn't working, is it?
likearock replied to mnealtx's topic in Speakers Corner
Yep, the surge is going great.
