  1. 1. Get Manny to make you up one of his rig carry-on bags. It'll fit the allowable dimension template. 2. Carry it as if it's light. 3. You generally only sometimes get hassled as it goes through the scanner. Bullshit and perseverence helps here.
  2. Just saw this thread for the first time today. CRW spots make interesting landings, particularly that first one of the day when you have no idea what the upper winds are doing! Even better is to open above a cloud layer with no ground reference at all. Did that in Swaziland once in the mid 80s, jumping an Arava at 14000 ft. Cloud base around 4000 ft. After several minutes of CRW, we broke through the clouds with no idea of where the DZ was: above several small hills in a VERY rural area. I looked hard and saw a hut on a hill with a road leading to it and a car parked outside. No problem. I shouted at my mates and pointed to our new landing area. We all landed next to the hut with the car. Only problem was: that car had been on bricks for a long long time... It took most of the rest of the day to get back.
  3. Hi Kevan Is that you? The 80's were indeed a rough time...
  4. Beers, Arno! Who else was on the load?
  5. Should be the same as FAI. Based on the CRWEuropa rules where it all started.
  6. You CAN be a responsible husband and father while being a jumper. All it takes is balance from a time perspective. Regarding the risk: minimise that by jumping the best gear possible and it looks like you've gone that way. Too many of our community leave the sport when they "grow up", get married, have kids, etc. It's a damn shame. You've made the right decision. Enjoy the new toys!
  7. 24 for cans & dumpies; 12 for pints & quarts
  8. Sincere congratulations from the South African CRW community! What awesome pictures!
  9. Well done! The dark side welcomes you. May you do many more.
  10. What's wrong with a downplane on a first CRW jump? I always try and do it if the jumper has shown him/herself to be relatively switched on. A nice way of hooking someone on to the sheer fun of CRW!
  11. Are you sure there aren't any DZ's out there? I went to a CRW World Meet out there in '92. A city called Anyang where they had an aviation university. The Chinese dominated CRW competition for a few years in the 80's. Quantum Leap changed all that from 1990, but the Chinese were very active at that time.
  12. "Another One Bites the Dust"?
  13. Not "Flace", but "vleis". Pronounced the same way. means "meat". Definitely not PC
  14. It was in the middle of a 9 day training camp with a target of 10 jumps per day. We were all younger in '92, but the body was still pretty sore!
  15. 13 - all CRW and self-packed
  16. Not a good thread to read when you're stuck out in Saudi Arabia! My homebrew however, packs a real punch...
  17. Hi I was there this time two years ago. Grounded due to bad weather only 3 days in 2 weeks. The rest of the time we had great weather. I didn't stay at the DZ apartments - i was at a caravan/cottage park nearby. I'll send you details if you PM me. DZ facilities excellent and the scenery... look at the pic. The DZ is in the centre.
  18. Always fun to take up a first CRW-er! My general plan for the first jump is 3 side-by-side transition bottom docks followed by 3 side-by-side transition top docks. Rotate off the top, bottom-dock the newbie again, then call him down for a downplane. The student gets an incredibly busy skydive and you get a good chance of hooking him/her into CRW. Of course, the above plan works well with CRW first timers that have some canopy skill and/or aptitude to start off with. There are a few that you can only do so much with...
  19. I've been a staunch opponent of AADs in CRW rigs - probably because I couldn't afford one! Two sets of gear and AADs as well? No chance. My team went to Gap in 2003 and HAD to jump AADs as it's a French rule. Strangely enough, after borrowing a Cypress just for the Meet, I kept switching it on for every jump. My old arguments against AADs just didn't work for me anymore. I now have a Cypress 2 and I'm very happy with it for CRW.
  20. Hi Homer Always a good thing doing CRW with CRW-specific canopies. Saves a lot of trauma and reserve repacks. Cheers Andre
  21. Hi Mark How are things going with your own training? I read that you have had Russian coaching. What sort of scores are the Brits getting these days? Cheers A
  22. Hi Kleggo What scores? Scores and places in Rotes? Cheers Andre
  23. How about the last line: "Wow, they really lived?"
  24. Why did they show a picture of the dingo? What happened to the pic of Azaria?
  25. My initial thought on reading this thread was "pack properly and stop whining". I then read your list of injuries and circumstances, Tom. Now I know why I struggle to get out of bed on a cold morning....
