A cowboy came to my DZ and had in his pickup truck a PARA-POINT canopy with other associated parts that he had found on a ranch near Okeechobee,Fl.while on a fence patrol.I called Steve Snyder and informed him of the items and serial #.I don't know about any FBI but I was questioned by several military persons. And was later told the rig Quotewas stolen from the military. I still have the canopy and some other parts around some place.........Pop

Interesting award or license numbers

Woody, DD#1 however I didn't get any awards after that except a plaque for 5000 because USPA had no awards after Double diamond at the time. Pop -

Howard,I had forgotten about thoughs pic's.Must be 62/63 when people were getting pulled through sides of our airplanes. The blast handle was more secure and easier to grab with gloves (most wore them then). The center pull was invented about the same time but was hard to get to some time. The modern rigs, bigger airplanes, larger doors, piggy backs, have eliminated the snagging the reserve handle syndrome.I'm sure you know about those days..............Pop

***I think Switlik Parachute Co. made most of the lap type.If you can find a pre 1950 Switlik manual it will show the instructions.I had one that I loaned to Poynter in 1970 (which he returned) but can't find it in all my junk!!! Pop

QuoteSecurity XBO came with blast handle reserve as did many military type w/o problems.......Pop

Just pull the ripcord and hope you get lucky! Those were the days of chest mounts and flat canopys, that is why I perferred cutaways but PCA frowned on the practice.BTW, the ARMY AIRBORNE had pilot chutes on reserves (grappel Hook or umbrella type)and were tought to just PULL IT! At least that was when I was a Rigger there and did'nt see many entanglements after seeing 100's of mals on the T-7A mains..........PopQuote

I made my first free fall in 1956 with a 24'twill chest with a ma-1 pilot chute.I have had 66 reserve rides,36 cutaways and 30 hand deployed all with pilot chutes.I would never jump any parachute without a pilot chute. I was almost kicked out of PCA in 1959 because I was using cutaways instead of hand deploy methods but they needed the dues from our 30 member club more! How things have changed........Pop

Indiantown started using PC's for all student jumps in 1968 and if you made your first jump there after 1970 it would have been a FREE FALL (5 sec delay).Static lines were band from the DZ then! PopQuote

I met Speedy in the late 50's while doing a demo on the state fair midway in Florida. He worked for Deggler amusments out of Stuart,Fl.and was doing his drome ack.During our conversation it turned out my father had road the drome with him in the 30's. After speedy retired from show business he was Erve Digglers pilot flying him from show to show during the season. Speedy would fly to my DZ (Indaintown) on week ends to BS with the jumpers. He was so busted up from his injuries that he could barely get in and out of his C-172 and I would tell the jumpers that is how they will be walking when they get Speedys age A great guy and story teller. Early history of Tandem parachuting

Yea,I remember that one.There was a picture of it floating around.POP -
It must have been a 336 since it has fixed gear, unless that was part of the mods.I thought it was a good idea except at the time there many other new aircraft being built that would do a better job,Fairchild Porter,Helio Stallion, etc.POPQuote

Howard, the C-119G had the beaver tail that would open in flight and also had 4360 P&W engines. And of course is not the type in the pic.POPQuote

Early USPA Instructor Certification Courses...
poppenhager replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Howard, My photo is an original and is in reverse of yours (copy problem). The 1st instructor examiner course was held in Pheonix the weekend of Feb.21,22,23,1962 (Washingtons birthday) now called Presidents day.PCA sponsored and (paid for it). There were 23 participants and Nate Pond nor Murial Simbrio were involved. We all learned alot there and had a great time even thou the weather sucked the first day. I drew #21. Of the ones still with us,it's hard to even reconize ourselves much less the others today since it was 45 years ago!!!!! POP D47 -

A Howard DGA cowl, exhaust, and engine mount was used on the 195 conversion and originally had 14/1 blowers also. Pop -
In the 50's they called it a B-5.It had a guild surface canopy packed in a quarter bag and had provisions for the F1-B auto opener. POP

I made 22 jumps from the C-119.Have many hours kicking out cargo from them. They were not under powered and were good performers for the time. The C-82 (prior to the 119) was a dog and gave the 119 a bad name.(flying coffins) 119's did a great job delivering troops and cargo during the Korean war on a daily bases. POP
