Well, the step was made smaller. Don't know if many people remember what the step used to look like, but you could easily put 3 in the door and 2 on the camera step with the original step design. Then it got changed to the camera step just being that little nub on the back of the main step. I think that people should be doing number 2 but I don't like the idea of moving the bar. It will make climb outs more difficult and it's not what people are expecting. Both things which would lead to string out jumpruns and such. The reality of it is that people need to just not be stupid. When someone shows up at a dropzone for the first time, someone needs to make sure they know the rules of the road. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. What we have figured out is that it mostly is about how the people on the outside of the plane are hanging on. If you have 4 people out and they are all at full arm extension it disrupts most of the airflow over the horizontal stabalizer. That leads to the stall. Our bigger way organizers have taken that into account when they are setting up the door lineup and it has made a difference. The biggest problem we have found with too much weight in the tail is that the plane really jumps when that large group goes and it makes it pretty hard on late divers. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Yeah, but the people at skyride deserve all of them and any more that ever get started. As far as things go, we all know that ASC and Skyride have done and will continue to do substantial harm to the sport just to make a buck. You guys in this thread should really go over to the farm and jump there. The people there have substantially better ethics. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Landing a plane vs landing a parachute
Fast replied to gofast_ER's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did an introductory flight cause I would like to actually learn how to fly at some point here. The instructor who was up with me was shocked I could even point out the airport. I was able to fly around and locate landmarks, do turns on heading, maintain airspeed and look around for other people. Take-off was a bitch, got t be more things than i could think about at once. I was able to fly to the intended points and line up an on center landing, basically first try. He took over at actual touchdown, but I flew the plane basically down to the runway. I think there is some awareness crossover and just being comfortable up in the air. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Another reason not to listen to AFF instructors...
Fast replied to ManagingPrime's topic in Safety and Training
I have had a hard time deciding what my opinion about this is. As an AFF instructor I have seen some people do some really dumb shit and the only reason they got away with it is because we were there to help them. I am not sure where to draw the line between telling someone to disregard what I'm saying if they think they know better. How can they know better? (really, it's a question not sarcasm) I have thousands of jumps and have radio'd quite a few students to the ground safely. I have also watched a lot of people disregard or not follow directions and end up in really bad situations. I have also watched (and made a few) mistakes happen in terms of radio commands given. So, clearly it's possible for that to be the case. At least for me, I have a pretty good idea of when "I can't help this person anymore" and I will tell them so. "I am no longer in a position to help you on the radio, find somewhere safe to land in half brakes with a good PLF." Then they are on their own. If I haven't said something to that effect, i really would rather have them follow my instructions no matter how dumb they think they are. It happened with a student just recently that the radio operator was giving a command and the student disagreed with it and almost was hurt. If he would have followed the command to the T he would have been ok, but he decided that the instructor was nuts and did his own thing. Who's fault is it then? ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I only have about 900 velo jumps but I'd say you have the right idea. I've had openings spin me 360 degrees because it inflated asymmetrically, but I've never had the canopy fly itself into line twists. Yeah - try to keep your hands off the risers on a Velo... It just causes problems for the most part. I will kick to tr and momentum with the canopy if it is trying to spin faster than the momentum is being transferred down to me in the harness. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Part of that question should be "Do I want a lense that shoots in HD or not", cause as far as I can tell, the royals don't look nearly as nice as the newer HD stuff. The Opteka 37mm .3 doesn't vignette on screen on a cx100 but you can see a little bit of it on the computer. Also, I pretty much zoom mine in a little bit anyways so I don't see my goggles/nose. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. use priceline and bid on a car, can get a good deal. Though half the problem is taxes. You can also catch a bus from the airport here to ohare for like, $30 or something. You can also take the train into the city of chicago if that helps somehow, but the train station is about 10 blocks from the airport, don't know if there is a shuttle. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Fair point, but any good dropzone will take someone who has that much tunnel experience and tailor the program around them. There are still a handfull of major skills that you can't learn in the tunnel. Canopy Flight - Static line is prolly gonna be the best here and if you can find a dropzone with a decent program, the cheapest. Tracking - I haven't seen any SL programs that have a strong emphasis on tracking and group work. Altitude Awareness and Overall situational awareness - Dunno, I think this could go in favor of aff or static line. With a few hours of tunnel time, there is going to be a learning curve to develop the altitude awareness cause in the tunnel you just wait till the lights flash then miss the flashing lights then the tunnel rat reminds you "its time to get out." Skydiving you don't have that luxury. AFF doesn't have to be expensive either, if he has all of the other air skills then there is no reason to do a long AFP style program that teaches turns and levels and docking and that stuff. At the end of it all, the focus is going to be on surviving a skydive, dealing with the canopy, malfunctions and learning how to track all while staying altitude aware. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. What freefly friendly container (and options) to invest in?
Fast replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Gear and Rigging
My understanding is the articulation is mostly a comfort thing. Honestly, I think it just causes the harness to be too easy to move around. I'm ok with hip rings but the fully articulated chest rings drive me nuts. I have also heard too many stories of people not being able to find handles because the rig was so twisted around on their body cause of all the articulation. I bought a brand new vector3 and skipped any articulation. I also don't like the stainless french hardware either, but that's cause my damn leg straps slip sometimes when I'm swooping and unload half the harness. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Converting velcro toggles to non-velcro?
Fast replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Gear and Rigging
This problem is solved as simply as buying a new set of risers. For the most part, you can even use risers from any manufacturer with any rig. Look around at your dropzone and see which design you like best then ask your rigger if that design will work with your rig. Pay money, get new risers in mail, have rigger hook them up (or do it yourself and have a rigger check your work) then... Problem solved. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka -
How about you qualify your answer a little better. "Maybe" is a much better answer. It depends on the dropzone. Call the one you might be thinking about going to. Depends what gear you are trained on, what gear they have, what the entries in your log book looke like, what proficiencies you have proven to instructors and also often the ability of the dropzone you are visiting to get in touch with someone at your home dropzone that knows you. Till you have a license, no one has fact checked your "log book." I put that in quotes cause some people are dumb and try to do dumb things like change dates on an old log book to start jumping again w/o going through class. As an instructor we have to check into that stuff somewhat to be sure things are safe. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Yeah, see, you aren't really getting it. He paid for something, he should be getting it. They have no excuse to make you sit around. If you were on the schedule, they should have staff there to jump with you and they shouldn't push you out of the way to do tandems. Now, if you are just showing up at the DZ and saying "hey I want to jump today" that might be different. At my DZ we do the best to get people who just show up wanting to jump in the air, but sometimes it takes awhile. If they schedule a few days in advance we are able to make sure we have enough staff to get them in the air in a timely manner. I'd also suggest that you inform them adequately of the problem, explain why it's bothering you and what your course of action will be if they don't fix it. Or keep getting pushed around, it's up to you. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. On realising your alti is broken mid jump , do you ?
Fast replied to Morne's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Then you have to use your brain. The reality is that I could come up with hundreds, thousands, of situations in skydiving where something or another has gone wrong and you have to react to it in some way. What if: You altimeter breaks, then you lose your goggles and cant see anything and both your arms get broken at the same time, and you have no aad what do you do? See, it can get kind of ridiculous. This is one of the reasons that we try to teach critical thinking when we are teaching someone how to skydive. We can provide the answers for some of the things that happen most often or are the most common problems but you have to be able to react and figure something out when a situation you have not planned for or thought about arises. One of the few reasons that I will turn someone away from AFF is if they show to me that they are incapable of thinking on their own. If I have to give them an answer to something (beyond the standard skydiving education) for them to not get killed it makes me very uncomfortable. Also, for what it's worth, I can tell from your posts that you have never really ended up "low" in freefall. The reality of this is that at some point the ground starts getting closer and you will almost certainly notice. it has happend that people don't (4way team cypress fires for example) but you have to work pretty hard to not notice the ground coming up. it's a visual thing. Really you need to stop trying to bend this question around and realize that all the people saying "use your eyes and look at the ground/horizon" are giving you the answer that you are desperately seeking. That's my $0.02 ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka -
On realising your alti is broken mid jump , do you ?
Fast replied to Morne's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The reality of things is that you haven't included all the available options. If im on a group skydive of any sort I will use the altimiters of the other people im jumping with in combination with the fact that I most often wear a dytter of some sort and am capable of jumping w/o an alimiter. I have had it happen a handful of times that someone on the plane forgot their altimeter and who would need it more than I would. So I have given them mine to use and just jump without one. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
