Yeah... It's another reason im considering picking one of these up. Spring/fall are fuckin cold here sometimes. It makes me not want to shoot video and I'd be less annoyed with it if I could wear a fullface. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Why should anyone listen to you, when you're already demonstrating on here a disregard for safety. I understand the distinction between what people do in reality and what people suggest doing on here. There are reasons why that works though and being responsible with a person you have never seen personally means taking the route down the safer side of the equation. I feel like you're on some kind of crusade to bash anyone who tries to stick to basic recommendations. The internet isn't the place to tell johnny hotrod (no reference to original poster) to go out and rip it up. Trust me he is gonna do that all on his own. --------------------- Anyways...... It was mentioned here already once, but,... at the point you're at, buying a camera isn't a good idea. Spend the money on jumps and when it gets closer to the point that you are actually going to need the camera, be that 100, 200 or whatever recommendation you follow, buy it then. The camera's change yearly and who knows when you're gonna be ready. My other advice is to "slow down" cause if you think skydiving is cool, you're gonna have to adjust to that a bit. Everyone that I see who gets into this sport with the grand ambition of doing everything on day 1 either gets hurt or quits cause they can't wingsuit on jump 10. Skydiving is different because every jump only gets you about a minute of free fall experience and a couple of minutes of canopy. So for every hour or two at the dropzone, you're getting 1-5 minutes of experience depending on how you're looking at it. There are really amazing things to do in this sport, but you have to have some patience to get there and it's worth it. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. video or it didnt happen My particular DZ doesnt allow any use of footage taken by staff to be used in any way other than to be given to the customer - fireable offense! Even sports jump footage cannot be used. It's BS. I almost lost my job for uploading footage of my first mal. I have a photo of my N3 displaying the speed (@ 12k) after the jump that I can upload - but that doesnt prove I was on my belly at the time of the recorded speed. I know I did it, wouldn't post it otherwise. That's fucking insane. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 200 jumps is the accepted minimum for using a camera, and my progression starts off without me using a camera at all. What is your problem with that? Accepted minimum for jumping with tandems is 500 jumps. The complications that you're adding by jumping with a tandem, w/o a camera on your head are going to be further complicated by the fact that you are "practicing" for camera. It's not _that_ much different than actually having the camera. I also suspect that you are going to get bored of it really quick and just strap the camera on. If you're gonna use wings, step 1, do some solos with the wings, relearn how to move around, up/down, turns, forward/back, slides, fast and slow. After that, I'm sure there are people at your DZ doing RW jumps. Go film them. Get comfortable filming those jumps, learn about what it means to shoot video and why it's complicated. Learn how to hold your head still, how to get the right shot and understand what exactly you're doing. Then, you can go figure out learning to fly with tandems / shooting tandem video. The only thing that you should be learning while dealing with a wuffo are things you have to learn that way. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. What it sounds like is that right now your mail is being directed to the server for the web domain. Then you are poping the mail off that server for it to be on exchange and prior to that, your mail should be going through postini. You don't have to change spam filtering providers if you don't want to. That's not where the problem is most likely. If there is nothing in any of your domain setup indication a mail host A record at your web provider, or any sort of MX record for your mail provider, then the only way that they are sending mail there is by guessing or infering that you us that mail host because your web is hosted there. Why aren't you directing mail directly from postini to your exchange? Postini will spool your mail for awhile if your server goes down, but you have to set it up that way. It's not a long term solution though. You can also purchase backup MX services and then put them in your mail server priority after the postini. 10 MX 1.postini.com 20 MX 2.postini.com 30 MX mail.backup.com 40 MX mail2.backup.com Those are just examples. Incoming mail _should_ obey those rules, but spammers don't. If they pickup the backup server and send mail to it directly then the mail from the backup server also then has to go through the postini, which shouldn't ever go down, which then means that you're back to postini hosting your temporary backup. I read somewhere that postini can spool up to 1GB of mail for you, dunno how long it would take your organization to generate that much mail. You may already have the solution you are looking for and a few simple configuration changes can solve the problem. You should look more into that. I mean, you're not going to be able to access it from the postini spool, but if your mail server is totally dead, you have bigger problems. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Yeah I agree with this. You can search and find a whole bunch of info on it here too cause it's been talked about over and over. It's the smallest/highest resolution lens that we would really want to use for skydiving as far as I recall. It's what I have on my camera and so do many people at my DZ. It doesn't resolve fully to HD, but none of the low profile lenses do. Your only other option is to get a larger multi element lens. That might have changed since I last had to look into buying something but I don't think so. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. If it's cloudy you're gonna have to worry about not enough light in general. If it's really sunny though, you are going to have problems with the background of the pictures being blown out if you don't have enough light under the gazebo or the camera will meter for the surrounding light and colors of the subjects under the gazebo will suck. This is basically the same problem we see when taking a picture of a tandem student in the plane. It's hard to recognize anything outside the windows cause it's too bright, or the stuff outside looks nice and inside is too dark. I dunno you prolly know most of this stuff, just wanted to throw in that extra bit! Have fun it should be a good time!

I actually shoot both raw and jpeg when not skydiving cause the camera can push the data to the card faster than I normally want to take pictures. Outside is good cause then you don't have to worry about church/camera rules (Some do not allow flash photography at all durring ceremonies). But outside lighting can be quite complicated. Depending on time of day, positioning, etc there could be some really bad shadows, fill flash will make a huge difference. You need to understand guide numbers and how they relate to ISO and the distance a flash is effective from. I want to second the "RENT" concept for the lenses that you use. Can't even come close to explaining how much better the pictures are going to look shot through L glass lenses compared to the standard stuff. My dad was a photographer for awhile, then got out of it and has gotten back into it somewhat. He sold his entire shop worth of woodworking tools to be able to afford the L lenses over standard. If you want any kind of pictures that don't have flash that are shot at the reception you basically _have_ to have a fast lense (i.e. wide aperture) otherwise you're pretty much stuck with plash photography. Diffuser is a must, but you can also do a lot of really nice stuff by bouncing a flash off walls / cielings / etc. You just need some practice with it. Any on camera flash that doesn't have a swivel head is worthless as an addon purchase. Flash photography is really fun once you get the hang of it. (just for fun I attached a picture I took in the DZ parking lot, our office building is white, i had the flash pointed back and to the side at the building and it lit them up like this, sooo much better looking than if I had shot it straight on and blew out all the color with the white flash light) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I think that the reality of this question is that, if you don't feel comfortable landing the main you have in your container in any of the areas that you might be forced to do so you are jumping the wrong main. I might not like landing my velocity in town, but I certainly could do it. The harder thing is picking out unknown obstacles in an area you don't frequently land in and most of them will fuck you over on a main or reserve equally. I have never jumped the reserve in my current container, I have over a thousand jumps on my current main, at this point I have gotten pretty good at flying it in the close vicinity of all kinds of moving and non-moving obstacles. Billvon: You mentioned "at night" and my answer stands, don't take a canopy you aren't comfortable with having to land off field with no lights. Same goes for bail outs, if you aren't comfortable enough to land the canopy anywhere that you might have to bail out, then your choice of canopy is flawed. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Military spending is MOST of the problem. $700,000,000,000 a year in military budget (Afghanistan and Iraq are off-budget) is over HALF the deficit. It's more than there rest of the world spends put together on their militaries. It's THIRTY times what other countries our size spend (Canada has a $21.8B budget). It's TEN times what #2 spends. I'm surprised so-called "conservatives" put up with such an enormous socialist employment program. Fair enough, but... The systemic problem is that we are good at pissing other people off. The current military budget is a necessary evil of the political position our country is in. We need to solve the other problems first and the military budget will fall in tow. You guys are going to ignore my post cause it's sensible and go on arguing about if this program or that should be cut, but the fact of the matter is that most of the people in this world have gone overboard on everything. Too many hand outs, too many kids, too much consumption, too much telling others what to do, rich people with too much money, too much period. It's not one side of the fence, it's most people, pretty much everywhere for one reason or another. All things in moderation. I'm all for helping people in need and stepping in when we have to politically, but damn... shit is out of hand. Way out of hand. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka

The problem that I have with all of this is that what they are doing isn't effective at all. Airport security has been almost completely ineffective for basically as long as I can remember back to. What they are doing now won't even come close to stopping a person who is determined. There are countless reasons why. Here are a couple of good articles on the subject. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2008/11/the-things-he-carried/7057/ http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2010/10/for-the-first-time-the-tsa-meets-resistance-updated/65390/ The fact of the matter is that even the process of lining that many people up for security screening poses a risk that they are unable to solve. I mean, I don't think we should do nothing, but we need to take a step back and figure out what might actually be effective and implement that. The reactionary process that the current system is based on is never going to be truly effective. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. There isn't really internet blocking in the united states. Typically the way it works is that the law is based on where the corporation exists and/or where the server is. If your company is in the US they can sanction you, if the server is in the US they can seize it. If both exist outside the country then it depends on the level of cooperation between the DOJ and the host country. This wont really change things that much imo. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. If you have e-mails agreeing to and confirming the amounts then that is actionable. Don't know if it is worth your time and energy or not but don't let the fact that there is not a formal contract prohibit you from seeking redress if that is what you wish to do. Yeah, I'm aware. In the end the issue was sorted out, but it took a lot more work than being able to point at the contract and say "We agreed to xyz beforehand, that can't be changed after the fact" ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Problems with SkywardBoundSkydiving Reno

I have actually had this problem with people leasing our airplane. We would rent our cessna out for demos. In the past we would just go on "verbal" contract via things stated in emails. After a guy stiffed us this year, we had to stop being nice. Everyone signs a contract now no matter what. I mean, most of these people are using like, $100-$200 worth of time/fuel. Didn't seem worth dealing with all the contract nonsense... oh well, it is. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Just for fun I really want to beat this one to death. It was a packing error. The only way it would happen in air is if you did a flip after throwing out. Other than that it's not physically or theoretically possible. This is one of the reason's that I am _very_ particular about who packs for me. I'm not lazy either, I just don't have time to do it with everything else I'm trying to do in between jumps. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I know that Julio is out of town. He has responded to one of my emails, with at least as much as to say that. Said he should be back next week. I agree. It's likely that we are not going to have to deal with this for much more than 1-2 years. The resulting cluster fuck of paperwork that the IRS will have to deal with is going to be cost prohibitive. Maybe we're wrong, only time will tell. As for the comment regarding W-9 forms, if you're a corporate entitity and accepting corporate checks for things then you will be required by law to provide a W-9 form to the person buying with a corporate check, it's not a question of if they want to give you the information, they have to. Hell, office max has their w-9 on their website so that wont be a huge deal. The main change here is that in the past 1099s were only required to individuals for services rendered over $599. Now it applies to corporations and goods. It's annoying, but dunno how much can really be done about it. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. No we don't. Thanks for selling my DZ short based on one post, by one person, with 30 jumps, that really has her hands full just remembering all the right things to do on a skydive. (Not picking on you Robyn, that's just where you're at right now). I wasn't on that load, but someone was who I do trust to tell me the truth was and as far as she can remember (a skydiving staff member/instructor with over 1500 jumps) no one was "yelling". There was likely a "Go" because as noted elsewhere in this thread, you were spotting when the light changed from yellow to green. As for hop and pop's and cuts, everyone gets one, students and experienced jumpers. Proper configuration of the plane for a hop and pop pass is flaps on and nose slightly down and everyone gets that. I have had to physically stop someone from jumping before the green was on, because they were about to do a poised exit into the tail, I don't understand why either because we tell new jumpers to the dz about these things and there are signs in the plane. I'm not writing this post to talk about or nit pick every little issue that people have brought up in this thread, but I don't want people thinking that my dropzone is full of people who are yelling go. It just isn't. As for any of the commentary about downsizing, what's being done with her is what's reasonable and safe, and I say that as an aff instructor that has seen her jumps. Also, Robyn does write a lot, maybe a bit more than she should, but if you don't like it don't read her posts. I wish people wouldn't be so mean about it. She talks more than she writes too. Wrap your head around that. It takes some getting used to and everyone doesn't always have time to listen to everything, but she is just an enthusiastic new jumper, be nice. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
