Looks like the SCOTUS is going to have to get into it now (Gay Marriage)
champu replied to okalb's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree it would be preferable to divorce the automatic government benefits/arraignments from marriage itself, and then revisit each of those benefits and ensure the ones that make logical sense (e.g. medical information, visitation, decisions) are available for people to set up on their own regardless of marital status... ...however... ...it's unsettling that this viewpoint only seems to come up in the context of the gay marriage debate. In my mind, it's the offshoot. To help me understand a little better, is there anything specifically that the government does or does not do with regards to recognizing marriage that constitutes telling us how to run our personal lives? -

Obama puts foot down: No Internet fast lanes
champu replied to loumeinhart's topic in Speakers Corner
The whole "fast lane" thing is akin to the proposition in California that makes its way onto the ballot every so often where car insurance companies "want to be able to offer discounts to people for having continuous insurance coverage." Oh yeah... they're just itching to charge people less money... -
I'd hope not or else your system wouldn't be very useful... ...I know you meant "more important than" not "greater than" but I couldn't help but imagine a person running around a bunch of racks of equipment with a fire extinguisher as more and more components burst into flames faster than they could be put out.

False dichotomy.

Looks like the SCOTUS is going to have to get into it now (Gay Marriage)
champu replied to okalb's topic in Speakers Corner
Calling various level governments' involvement in marriage the "regulation of personal relationships between adults" is a misrepresentation. Being married, as far as the government is concerned, has nothing to do with your personal relationship with that person. The government regulates impersonal relationships between the two of you together and others. -
Mike Brown’s Mother Caught in Armed Robbery
champu replied to CameraNewbie's topic in Speakers Corner
And what does that add to the story? Honest question. You normally have a valid argumant tor the subject.then again it might just be my new phone R I was calling attention to the T-shirt she was wearing. /edited to add: To be fair, I don't know the whole story of who is selling what or if the mother just had that one t-shirt, or if the mother would rather the t-shirts be given away and that's why she was mad, etc. -

California's democratic executive branch and super-majorities in both the assembly and senate was ridiculous. It really ends up concentrating way too much power in the Governor's office because virtually everything his party dreams up ends up on his desk. Thankfully the super-majorities are both gone now.

I don't disagree with the general point you're trying to make about parties needing to work together and needing to pass laws for the government to function, and I've lamented it myself in the past, but you are treating the president's budget request as "the budget" when the operative word is really "the request."

??? The sum total of the appropriation bills passed by the houses and signed by the president is the budget. They are not a distinct thing.

What is so evil about requiring id to vote?
champu replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Speakers Corner
I did not have to show ID. I provided my name and address and they had me sign next to it in their book. They asked me if I needed an audio assisted ballot, I said no, and they handed me the scantron. No line at around 7:45 this morning. I live a little over half mile from my polling location so I walked. As kelpdiver noted in another thread, in California they mail you a sample copy of the ballot a few weeks in advance along with (basically) a printed copy of this website, so you can mark it up ahead of time and bring it with you. Seeing people without any kind of notes was a little disconcerting as there were a total of 42 items to vote on in my area. -
Here you go... sorted by job title... Although even within some job titles, variation should be expected.

Fuck YOU summertime/DLS whatever you wanna call yourself
champu replied to stayhigh's topic in Speakers Corner
Then you should be happy it's over. -
His bill could have been mistakenly banning body glove (the wetsuit manufacturer here in Redondo Beach) and he'd issue the same press release saying despite the misunderstandings his bill still had merit. Politicians that dig in like this make me throw up in my mouth a little. But, Honda is a representative for silicon valley and he nails all the rest of the democratic social bullet points so he can do whatever he wants when it comes to firearms, body armor, etc. and there's no risk of him losing an election. I wish republicans would put forward candidates that basically are the exact same platform as their democratic opponents, but pick one or two things that the democrat is actively doing that's ridiculous like this and then just... not do those couple things.

skydivers voluntarily quitting the sport?
champu replied to aguila's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This was definitely a fun thread to read through. I don't jump much these days ( -
I think choosing #2 from your list would be something to be proud of.

You're phrasing is as though the banning of skydiving altogether is a naturally-occurring consequence of too many people not having a reserve. That's the part that gives me heartburn as a libertarian. The natural consequence of not requiring a reserve is that you will probably see some more deaths and the public image of skydiving will be degraded. Skydiving doesn't just "become banned" in the passive voice. It ceases to be compromise when the only alternative presented is further and more draconian regulation by the government. In the example of my original topic, it's not compromise if you say, "There was an incident involving body armor... let us ban some body armor now or we'll ban all body armor after the next incident. (which, btw, we may do anyway if there's another incident.)"

FBI finds another way around those pesky search warrants

They should have just shot out a window and then barged in claiming they heard gun shots. -

My extensive google research says type III is rated against .308/7.62x51 whereas one level down is IIIa which is rated up to .44 mag. So basically they're drawing the line against body armor that protects against most rifle rounds. .30-06, .338, etc. not withstanding. My cynical translation of this proposed bill is, "if you get shot by a rifle round it means it was by a cop and you deserve it."
-
This bill is in its infancy, and I don't actually think it will go anywhere, but I'm curious as to what people think about representatives proposing laws like this, as a gesture or otherwise. What does this law say to you when you read it? https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/5344/text To save you the trouble of looking it up, type III basically means anything that will stop rifle rounds.

Your first four paragraphs make absolutely no sense given what I've written in this thread.

I was agreeing with kelpdiver's critique of your weak description of what science is and tossing out a little playful ribbing for fun (with the intro to my post being "while we're at it..." I thought that was more obvious than apparently it was.) Did you ask why I didn't think 2+2=4 was science? No, you threw a dictionary definition of mathematics at me that had the word science in it and then you folded your arms and leaned back in your chair. This is exactly why I was picking on you, because I think you're doing a crap job of singing science's praises. Science is not about marveling over a body of knowledge that exists at some snapshot in time or citing a book to shut people up, that's religion's job. And while I'm at it... What the hell is, "does not in any way demise the basis of the argument" supposed to mean? If you're going to be wordy, spend more time in that dictionary.
