  1. Yup, you’re hooked! Listen to your instructors, they will, ummmm, SHOULD teach you everything you need to know to handle situations... One important thing, listen to your instructors... And while you are doing that, pay attention. Did I mention listening to your instructors? Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

  6. I was amazed at how "not perfect" a pack can be and still deliver soft dependable openings or packed meticulously and perfect and slam the shit of the old body. There are only a few tings that are consistent with good pack jobs then a million little ritualistic nuisances’ people have developed over the years. Learn all you can about it then you will develop your own ritualistic nuisances as time goes by. Just remember one very important thing, it is important to wipe after going potty or you might get a rash Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…
  7. Don’t now ya personally dude, but follow your heart, there are many wonderful avenues to stroll down during this lifetime other than skydiving, gravity will always be here in case you feel the need. I have often said if there is one thing better than skydiving it would be the relationships formed with so many good people I have had the pleasure of forming during my time in the sport... I would imagine that there are others out there who might agree, overall, skydivers are good people... 8. Bill, thank you so much for posting this most thorough and informative dissertation. A lot of this information I know and teach but you have not only taught me a few other aspects of these techniques but offered explanations that I have not quite heard put this way. I am not going to make any comments to the contents or clarifications or enlightenments at this moment due to the fact that this essay requires that I sit down and give this information very close attention and consideration. Not exactly FJC material but perhaps something every “A” license holder should be familiar with and practiced to some extent, ergo way up there. One fact I would like to reemphasize to any skydivers deciding to attempt any of these maneuvers low to the ground in a live fire exercise is to please practice a lot with the kind of altitude that is friendly. Bill, you advised above 1,000 feet which is safety oriented, just don’t forget one thing kids, you will be landing soon. Don’t forget that by 1,000 AGL you should be in position in the sky that is a favorable position to begin your landing pattern, remain altitude and traffic aware and KNOW THY STALL POINT! Hats off Bill for a most excellent article, thank you. Mae it a great day, Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…
  9. Most answers to such questions can be found in the SIM... Per 2006 SIM • section four • page 28 Water 1. Refer to the USPA BSRs for equipment requirements on jumps near water, but many drop zones have waivers on file. 2. Procedure for an unintentional water landing: a. Inflate the flotation device (if available). b. Disconnect the chest strap (this may require taking your hands out of the steering toggles first). c. Steer into the wind. d. Enter the water with lungs full of air. e. Prepare for a PLF; since the depth is unknown. f. Flare the parachute to half brakes at ten feet above the water (may be difficult to judge) g. Dive deep and swim out from under the collapsed canopy. h. Take a deep, full breath at every opportunity. i. Release or slide off the leg straps and swim carefully away to avoid entangling in the suspension lines. Many skydivers have amendments and modifications to this protocol or have an alternate method incorporated in their personal procedures for varying situations contradictory the information contained in the SIM. Keep in mind that the SIM has been developed for many years and the knowledge contained therein is derived from decades of experience and millions of skydives but may still contain some information that may be considered by some authority apocryphal in nature. That being said I may not utilize every piece of information in the SIM but for the most part the vast majority of its information forms much of the basis for the foundation of safe skydiving practices that I choose to make my own. Make it a great day... Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

  11. I have seen two skydivers give immediate responses to a two out with bad results. In a two out situation with some altitude it may be wisest to give the canopies time to do their "dance". Reacting prematurely could be very costly indeed. Alternatively, I have seen a side by side separate justifying a release of the main canopy at less than 100 feet and the jumper was able to clear the main and land safely under the reserve. This taught me that patience with the canopies in such a circumstance might bear better results. I have also seen a jumper with a clearly recognizable downplane ride it in from 4,000 feet, luckily for this skydiver the canopies married into a side by side at around 100 feet and only resulted in a broken back, had the canopies not gone back overhead the result would have likely been much worse. So there is clearly a difference between patience and being frozen with an overabundance of adrenalin, the deer in the headlights syndrome. It is important to have an understanding of the recommendations for this situation, practice every conceivable scenario having preplanned actions for the varying possibilities. Because I have seen individuals have bad results when taking action too quickly and too late, it would be beneficial to have a calm mind when the excitement becomes great as it will likely do in such a situation. 18. Ron, you it a home run with this posting – well said… Few years ago I remember reading in Parachutist something about experience, it went something like: “Gusty windy days are when the experienced skydivers sit out by the landing area and watch the inexperienced skydivers gain experience”.
