While under canopy, altitude awareness is absolutely essential and it sounds like you did a fantastic job at that! Many skydivers do not pay attention to their altitude wile dealing with a situation under canopy, good job! Buffalo or Southern Ontario area Instructor Wanted...
AFFI replied to AirPilot's topic in Instructors
yes... Call Scott or Mike at Burnaby, they are expecting you: 1(800) 693-JUMP (5867) or (905) 899-1528 http://www.skydiveburnaby.com -
“Have you ever seen two parties reconcile when both sides believed themselves to be entirely right? Have you ever seen one side of an argument convince the other side through debate? Yet we continue to pile high our evidence, thinking our opponent will say, “Oh, now I see the light. Thank you for pointing out to me how wrong I’ve been.” Humility is an interesting attribute. Often seen as weakness, humility is actually the fruit of a deeper level of confidence and a higher level of thinking. When challenged, the small and insecure mind immediately becomes defensive and combative. But an expansive and secure mind will ask itself, “Do I really want to put my dog in this fight?” When the silent answer is, “No, this fight wouldn’t be worth the trouble or the distraction. It would be a bad investment of my time, and time is the stuff life is made of,” we say, “Maybe you’re right,” and the debate is ended. People call this humility. But when the quiet answer is, “Yes, I will put my dog in this fight because what’s at stake is worth the trouble,” then we see another fruit from the tree whose roots go deep and whose branches soar high. This second fruit is called patience. It allows us to stand firm in our convictions, never becoming frantic, anxious or shrill. Humility and patience; are the roots of your confidence sunk deep enough and do the branches of your intellect soar high enough to produce these daring fruits?” by Roy Williams Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

Buffalo or Southern Ontario area Instructor Wanted...

If you want to learn, there is a USPA rated instructor at Burnaby named Scott Borghese - he is without a doubt the very best solo freefall instructor that I have ever seen in action, he is a truly amazing teacher, especially when it comes to his greatest passion - skydiving. You will be amazed at his ability to teach and he should be able to assist in getting you license I think, call him and ask. I ya look him up, tell him Mykel says hi… Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat… -
Account of first cutaway; spinning mal.
AFFI replied to chrismgtis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
To be honest I never did. I was too preoccupied with straightening the canopy out with the rear risers and looking up at the canopy to figure out what was going on. Again, a lesson learned. I should have done that just to see if it fixed the mal. -

I am not reading this statement correctly, it seems like it is saying that the “old” and current methods are both inferior. I have not been skydiving very long and limited in my experience when compared to many others, so I don’t know what it was like by having firsthand jumping experience back in the day of military surplus gear, but I was raised by a skydiver who started in the 50’s and grew up around skydivers and pilots for the first 13 years of life. I would much rather have today’s training methods and gear over that which my dad had available. It seems to me like today’s is much superior in every way - and there are a lot more females who skydive, which is fantastic! I often times train individuals who cannot afford to prepay, and cannot afford to get new gear off the bat and go to tunnel camps and it takes them months to get through student training, it has to become one of the monthly bills and saved up for – that is what it was like for me too. So it is not out of reach for anyone who wants it badly enough. Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

Hopefully you understood the voice of wisdom I post #12. There is another situation that may arise where a jumper no at all accustomed to “going below 4,500”. Say you are at 2,000 in a larger jump plane (Otter) and are accustomed to deploying no lower then 4500, you are sitting right by the door. Then all of a sudden, something catastrophic happens to the airplane, not so terrible that the plane goes down immediately, but bad enough where everyone must get out post haste – a hesitation in the door may cost someone their life. Sure, you may receive a little assistance from those behind you, but that hesitation may be all that it takes where an immediate exit will give more people a chance to get out. It is an unlikely scenario, but it can and has happened. There is a reason for the Hop n Pop progression on the A License proficiency card, to get new jumpers accustomed to getting out lower to the ground then they are accustomed to in the even of an emergency. This is one check-off on the card that I am very stringent about, and I make certain to talk to recent A license holders to continue to practice low exits and get comfortable with them. Like becoming proficient with flat turns in order to take evasive action low to the ground, practicing low altitude exits may rarely or perhaps never have to be utilized, but if the time ever comes it is best to be prepared, for yourself and those behind you. At the DZ where I work, anytime either the camera flyer or the TI get tipped we always split it, if we both get hooked up, we still check with each other and make sure the love was spread around, and I usually give part of my tips to the editor, or sometimes the loader. It is not a policy or anything like that, just something the team does for one another... We are all in it together… Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

I was rear float on a KA that stalled about 7 years back, it happened very quickly – one moment I was rear float, the next I was going over the top of the rear horizontal stabilizer looking down as the plane fell, people scrambling to get out. We were doing a formation with the whole load, the exit obviously poorly planned, we still regrouped for a point or two and the pilot had plenty of altitude to get everything under control. Still have all the white paint marks on my Z1, good thing I was wearing a helmet on that one. Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

Snapped both my Brake lines!
AFFI replied to Dangerousmind86's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes and no. Yes, you should roll the nose on an original Sabre when packing, but over-tucking way back can cause problems too. Yes, a Sabre can open hard, I've experienced it. No, I wouldn't say its a characteristic of the canopy... other canopies open hard too... its been "over hyped" as a hard opening canopy by folks either with only a few years in the sport, folks pushing other canopy designs, or both. Hardest opening I have ever had is on a Stil150. Have around 700 jumps on Sab1, that canopy opened quite briskly, often times to the point it hurt. Had a pocket sewn into the slider that fixed it. An oversized slider would have done the same thing, it is the slider that controls the rate at which the canopy inflates. All this stuff about rolling noses is mumbo jumbo (Bills term). I was oing a search, looking for the standard definition of "Line Dump". The definition in the initial post is what I thought the definition was. Out of sequence to me, and the entire community in my neck of the woods is referring to a type of Horseshoe, where the container opens prior to the PC being deployed; it is still in the pouch. The deployment sequence is not in order (Step1. Deploy PC - Step 2. Container Opens - Step3, Canopy Opens). Step 2 takes place before Step 1... Snapped both my Brake lines!
AFFI replied to Dangerousmind86's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ahhh, so by out of sequence, you mean you believe the canopy as inflating before you had line stretch? That is a definition of the term I am not terribly familiar with, I was envisioning something totally different, thanks for the clarification. It would seem to me that this type of opening would have been so violent, it would have given more than a sore neck, or you are just tough! I will post an opening that I caught on video, it sounds like a freaking cannon went off! Kicked my helmet with my R foot, could barely breathe and definitely saw stars for a while, was in bed for days and did no jump for around a month. Will look for that vid… Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat… -
