A friend of mine who had often jumped with my team in the 1970s and 1980s, jumped at a demo in February a few years ago, , and he landed in water. He made another demo the following week, and he cutaway his main, and when he pulled his reserve, it was a frozen blob. He fought with it and finally got it to open about 74 feet above ground. Two hard osscilations and he hit the pavement, breaking his pelvis. He made a couple of more jumps in the following weeks, and finally decided to to see a doctor. He ended up having both hips replaces TWICE. He now waddles like a duck when he walks....in severe pain. I told him to say "Quack Quack" every so often and no one would notice. When he told me about his mal, he neglected to tell me he jumped his frozen reserve. I was informed of that by another old timer, and when I told my friend I knew what had happened, he just grinned and said' Well, thats the way it was...no big deal" Jumping a frozen reserve....his name is Gary FREEZE, of Greenspings, Ohio. The first and second world wars were really the same war in two stages. In November 1918, German did not surrender,but agreed to sign an armistice, which by dictionary definition is a short truce. The Allies forbid Germany to make war materials, especially aircraft, but they did it anyhow. I suppose the cop that tazered the lady could have done what the Edmonton, Alberta cops do to the native Canadians. They take them in their police crusiers to a lonely place at the edge of town in the dark of night, smash in their face with the handcuffs in their fists, and leave them with a few non winter clothes to walk back to the city. Valcore: I have searched the scriptures, and found nothing to indicate they would be sent to Hell for a suicide. I believe that the Catholic Church says they do, I believe that we will all stand before Jesus Christ to be judged, and if a person has followed Christ, and through faith, accepts Him as the Son of God, and lives according to God's WORD, then Christ will accept that person regardless of what sins he/she committed. Christ died for ALL our sins, not just some of them, and that is the wonderful things to be found in the gift of God's salvation. I truly am sorry for the loss, and if you ask God, with faith, He will take the burden from you. I have had a similar situation, and God took it from me when I asked Him, and I was totally relieved of the hurt and burden I was carrying. Thanks for the data. I have degenerated discs throughout my spine, and have crushed two vertebrae on different jumps. I get a nerve pinched between the vertebrae, and it won't let go. Ihope this helps some, cause the backpain is so bad its sometimes hard to get walking. Once I start, it becomes easier, but Im living on Percodan now for several years. Bill Cole

No ...I dont even know who packed the reserve for either jump. Reserve openings were not as bad as some people make out ...they were more a back breaker when the reserve was connected to the "D" rings in the center of the harness front. Later they were mounted higher, and with a "feet down / standing " position, they werent too bad. I had about 9 or ten reserves open for a variety of reasons, none was a hurter. Bill Cole D-41

The psychological side was ONLY intense if you dwelt on it. I thought about it on every jump for two mopnths before we went to do it, and so it eventually became just like any other jump. I didnt dwell on it then, and fail to understand why so many think it was much of a big thing. I knew it would help me in getting air shows and films etc, and other than that it was "interesting". One Toronto Newspaper headline claimed "The Greatest Stunt In History" when Rod Pack did it, so that intrigued me somewhat, and the reason I was the first to do it twice, was we didnt get good film the first time.

I can't really agree with you. It was just another jump, albeit, one that took a bit of planning , psychological more than physical. My interest in doing it was how certain people would react to hearing about it on the news....like my brothers ( I have 8 and 4 sisters)....like old school friends who likely thought I was nuts when we were in school, and so on.... The story ( as related by Mike Swain) is accurate up to the time I was in the air without the chute at about the 10,000 ft mark and falling. From there Mike takes poetic licence and it doesnt resemble the truth. I had the chute snapped on ( on both jumps) by the time I got to 6000 ft, and on both jumps I opened the reserve at 3000 ft. My log book states this and I kept it accurate. Mike has the pass being made much lower, and the chute opened at 1500 ft.....absolutely untrue, but it makes for a bit more excitement. He wrote the book about 20 yrs after the fact...I filled my log book out the same day of the jumps. There are a few things that could have been added by Mike, but it is his book....not mine.
