  1. The Canopy Formation Web Competition 2010 has started. This is a competition in 2 and 4-way sequential and 4-way rotation. Teams can (and should :) enter this competition between February 10th 2010 and June 15th 2010. See http://www.fai.org/parachuting/CF_web_challenge
  2. We're No Angels http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048801/ ;-)
  3. > What do I want ... an answer to the question !!! .. thats why I asked Only a amall amount of CRW jumpers read this forum at all and it would be pure chance that you get an actual report. You could ask the manufacturers of AADs or broaden your question and/or audience.
  4. IMHO the decline has nothing to do with putting up obstacles and missing support and your statement is not fair. For most jumpers and almost all new jumpers CRW is way outside their comfort zone. Maybe because it has become some sort of an unknown art and you see too few living species around doing it safe and having fun with it. Showing compilations of wraps and funnels on Youtube doesn't help either. When you have interest in doing CRW the dogs give you all kind of support. You can rent suitable canopies and you can get expert teaching and you will have a lot of fun. But you have to provide the will to travel (or let others travel) and to learn.
  5. BINGO! That's what I was looking for! Oh well....it was actually a work related question that segwayed its way into skydiving. Oh well.... Some people in Germany use a new/prototype measurement system called "Kate" in order to get such data. There are test reports for Pilot 150 and Spectre 150 already, but they are written in german and need translation. The testers are looking now for financial support and feedback from the community. Maybe more canopies are tested soon and/or manufacturers show some interest. http://www.dfv.aero/index.php/sicherheit%26nbsp%3B%26%26nbsp%3Btechnik/Tests
  6. 1. I have never seen such deployment systems in CF competitions. Are these used actually or is this coming gear? On the last WM in Teuge there was some discussion about shortening the 30s exit time because it costs too much time in the judging process esp. when the exit is reviewed several times. The judging and the production of "almost live" results would be more difficult with 60s exit time. 2. The work time in 2-way CF is 60s (exit time + work time = 90s). I could think of a longer work time for intermediate teams ("A class", "rookie class"). BUT at many nationals there are almost not enough teams for the open class and an additional class is difficult. Some infos about myself: I did my first competition as "performer" in 2-way CF at the german nationals two weeks ago (av. 3,9, third place). We had four CF-teams and two of them were such pro-am teams. That was such great fun and a great competition! Before that i was CF video only. Now i'm hooked ;-)
  7. Because the reserve is still inside the bag, inside the container. The jumper can sit with his back to the wall so it doesn't fall out, and he can hold the pilot chute in his hand, sit on top of it, stuff it inside his jumpsuit, or whatever, to contain it so that it doesn't escape. Minimal danger here. And in case of an emergency he'll do a hop&pop CRW jump with the pilot (diver driver, not pilot chute)?

  10. World record is 20 pts from russian team jumped in Teuge/NL 2008 But see round 4 on the running World Games: http://results.worldgames2009.tw/en/Comp.mvc/Info/AI/ResultList/AIX402102 Russia 21 pts. USA 23 pts.
  11. Hey, nice report! I hope you stay with CRW and write more! I nearly lost my first shoe this weekend. Normally i'm a videot, but now i'm a performer in CF2 (2-way CRW). And yesterday was my second training jump. In one topdock attempt the left shoe slipped over the heel already.
  12. Feeble, when you see the signs of a stall (pitch going up, rock to port) - would you jump before the team in order to make the situation safer?
  13. Thanks. That is a valid point. I'm reading the list now and found already some good discussions e.g. about the Pro-Am CF proposal. The discussion here in the forum was unnaturally quiet.
  14. http://groups.google.com/group/crwdogs Are these email lists better than forums? I only see the difficulties for wannabies and newbies to get to the essential information and contact to the scene.
  15. buff, cool that you have the drive to learn no contact CRW and still stay safe. I hope you find a CRW dog soon to teach you with proper gear and procedures. Hey CRW dogs - there is a DZ with FOUR potential CRW puppies waiting!!!!
  16. And when you need more e.g. canopy open in 3000 m and 30 km away from the DZ - a nice cross country flight... In Germany your CRW pilot (or better your jumpplane pilot, because he has radio and contact to air traffic control) should ask for a "Flugverkehrskontrollfreigabe" (air traffic control clearance). And your CRW formation must have the (realistic) intention to land on a "zugelassener Flugplatz" (authorized airfield). Both requirements fulfilled then up you go! This topic is in section "Luftrecht" question 23 (sic!) in the german question catalog for wannabe skydivers.
  17. > What "fear" are you talking about? Sometimes i ask jumpers why they don't do canopy formation. Often there is "fear" being in close distance to another canopy in the air. There are other reasons (lack of gear or instruction) too. Maybe this is memory from their instruction or canopy collisions over crowed landing zones.
  18. Canopy flocking is tight flying of high performance canopies (no contact) and there are more and more events upcoming: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3555692;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread As well as videos e.g. on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=canopy+flock&aq=f Maybe this is a good opportunity to attract people to CRW (canopy formation) as well? I hope there is a small step between no-contact with high performance canopy and contact with crw-suitable canopy when the first fear is gone and people see that it is possible to fly in close distance in a safe, controlled manner. What do you think?
  19. Very sad to hear this news. I met Pat in Empuria and Teuge and he gave me valuable instructions in CF and a lot of nice jumps to remember. Rest in Peace Pat.
  20. Congratulations for all the australian CRW jumpers! And big thanks to Tom B. for the logbook.
  21. Greetings from Germany!!! I wish you safe jumps, fun and success! Stefan
  22. They are back (since some time ago already). But the new 2009 design of the website rocks!!!! Great even with forum for discussion of the shows and submission of photos. Great, good work!!! Thanks.
  23. I use *infinity manually* with my video camera (Sony PC6) and my photo camera (Ricoh Caplio GX8). For CF2 *competition* i got nice results with normal angle video (~43mm 35mm equivalent): grips and lines are visible enough for judging, but not the whole canopies. In the same CF2 jumps/distance i used photo as well for *beautiful CF pictures*: with wide angle (~24-28mm 35mm equivalent) the complete CF2 formation is in the picture frame. Even with the normal angle video lens the distance between me and CF2 performers in *competition* is close, maybe too close for a videoflyer without CF experience. So when you decide to play on the safer side, stay with the normal angle lens first and try to stay in a safe, far enough distance from the formation. BTW. You can estimate the distance on the ground in your viewfinder with a similar sized object (garage door...)
  24. Do you know http://www.crwphoto.com/ from Bryan Scott? I learned a lot from his informations. The F value is (almost) not important for us CF videoflyers. The F value defines how open the lens is and how much light is required (small F value, less light) to get a good image and how big is the DOF (Depth-of-field) is. In CF we have a lot of light to work with and we work mostly with infinity focus settings. Much more information gives the focal lenght. The HDC-SD9 has a focal length of 3.0 - 30 mm. In wide angle mode 3.0 mm focal length of the HDC-SD9 with 1/6" CCD (560K x 3 pixels) is a 35mm Equivalent of about 42.9mm For a beginner in CF video and for small CF formations wide angle is not the best. Something with 'normal' focal lenght like 50mm in 35mm photo format or even a touch of tele zoom is better IMHO. with wide angle you need to fly closer to the formation (against safety rule "unless you stayed well back from the formation out of the way") or you need really big formations...
