Hmm...interesting. It might be hard to find an apolitical method for such an appointment. In the current system you have two of the three branches of gov't - Executive and Legislative - involved in choosing a member of the third branch, the Judicial. I'm against direct election of Supreme Court Justices and think the appointment process is a good thing. Any recommendations for improvement?

After Leahy's comments about the man and conduct that got him ousted fromt he Intelligence committee, were I in GWB's shoes I wouldn't contact the man at all for anything. But that's just Pat Leahy. Justice O'Connor's recent positions - in Kelso and that horrid decision in which she supported racial discrimination at the University of Michigan - tell me that it's time she retired. There was a move with Kirk Douglass and Annete Benning called The American President where Douglass played this left wing wacko president who wanted to confiscate hand guns. A real chick flick, yet it remains one of my favorite movies nonetheless. As much as I disagree with the aforementioned policy, the character Douglass played gave an excellent speech at the end of the movie detailing why flag-burning shouldn't be unconstitutional. His thought process was that the symbol of your country's freedom cannot be just a flag - it has to be one of that country's citizens burning that flag in protest. I think nobody here would consider me a left winger, but I agree with that line of thinking. In college even when I was a democrat (yes, I used to be a leftie prior to coming to my senses) I had a nice t-shirt with the American flag on it that read 'Try and Burn This One, Asshole!' (no offense to my fellow Muff Brothers). I don't like the flag being burned. However, the ability of a citizen to burn it without fear of retribution from the government he/she is protesting is truly one of the greatest testaments to the freedoms we, as Americans, enjoy. Fuck the flag burning assholes, but defend their right to burn. Ala Voltaire. Fuck the French too. The Republicans, in comparison with their democratic brethren, do play nice in many regards with regards to nominations. Yes, both sides do goat-fuck-stupid things with holding up judicial nominations, 'tis true. I challenge you, however, to find the Democratic nominee who was smeared as either Bob Bork, John Ashcroft, Chuck Pickering, or John Bolton has been. You can't. Period. A Republican congress confirmed a former ACLU lawyer to the bench. If anyone were to assert that a Democratic congress would EVER confirm an NRA lawyer to even an appellate court then I'd urge them to seek psychiatric care. The republicans need to grow a backbone with regards to nominees and fight back - dirty and hard - just like they are attacked. If they were to make the lies told about their nominees political liabilities then we could have serious debate about nominees vice the three-ring-circus we now frequently encounter. If there is evidence of foul play on the part of the husband, surely it would have been discovered 15 years ago. One would hope, at least.
