Tom, I believe the Jason pics and message Liv posted all relate to slider up line overs. Seems like solid logic there, I like the way Jason reasoned things out. Although I strongly believe in and use tape on slider up control lines to avoid just what Jason referred to; control lines moving outside inflating stabilizers slider up. Slider down with a tailgate, this is a mute point. I think the tailgate takes care of things, regardless of stabilizer position, provided of course the tailgate is used correctly. The 15% random black fuck factor seems to apply to every jump. Glad this post is about information and not condolences.

Uh, Frisco's a no-no too.

Calling all Stephen King Dark Tower series readers!
huckfinn replied to moodyskydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Well I hafta say that after avidly reading all STs books for years I'm about ready to give up on him. I thought the first two in the dark tower series were fantastic. Pretty much everything thereafter lacked the depth, complexity, and believability many of his other books had. Without ruining it for those who haven't read them, I thought his "foils" for what happens were totally cop-outs! I never thought he was exactly a challenging read, but these (and some of his other later books)are too pedestrian. Anyone else dissapointed? -
I'm looking for a used or inexpensive rigger's exam manual. I've already done all the reading but pretty much just need to brush up via the study guide. Any ideas? Thanks, Ginny

Just gotta resurrect this thread after my first look at C2. Wow! Now this is a real BASE "movie". Not the typical thrown together video grabs you usually see, and definitely full of the hard core action all of us want to see. The boys at Triax (that name reminds me of cereal for some reason) really put together a solid video I truly enjoyed. That tracking suit guy had some serious forward velocity, I thought it was a wingsuit! Who was that guy?

Hey Ferry. If you take your thumb out of that dike it'll get even wetter!

The pants in question are Team Bautasten customs. They work VERY well I might add. The pic is very sub-terminal and just look at the inflation. Do these pants make my ass look big? The ideas are out there. Don't think so hard about which pair of marketed pants to buy, just get some ideas and a friend who sews. Ok fuck it, do the right thing and buy Master Robi's Phoenix Pants. Cool pants don't make one a great tracker--- but great trackers dig cool pants.

Ok then, I don't use your technique or advise anyone holding my bridal to do so. I guess it all depends on how low we are talking here. Today's 141 footer with 3 second canopy ride just adds to the data base for me. I do think you know what the fuck you are doing, I'm just doing something different. Skinning cats takes many forms. Anyone doing low PCA's knows what they want done behind them. If they don't, they should call someone who knows everything, or maybe PM them. Ha ha ha ha. Skin, where are ya?

I believe he means the bridle is yanked from his hand at line stretch and doesn't let go of the pilot chute until it too is pulled. Just like most posts here. If I'm wrong, then in my opinion, he is wrong. S folded bridal in the left hand-90degree bent arm and pilot chute held snugly on the cap in the right hand. When your strong left arm gets pulled down by force, let the bridal free and let the pilot chute be pulled out of your right hand. Hold the bridal very strongly, it makes for higher openings. I love reading these posts with a nice buzz. Gets me into it enough to actually post.

There are several questions that pertain to "having performed duties under his/her certificate for at least 90 days within the preceding 12 months". Are they saying you must pack FOR at least 90 days in that 12 months? If so, do I have to pack a rig a day or what? Obviously this is a currency issue, but I didn't think you had to be that current. If you don't meet these requirements, what then? Thanks very much to any who can help clarify! Ginny

I tape right below the brake line attachement points on the canopy. I say 3M because it's a good brand of masking tape, any professional tape will work. Just ask your local painter about quality masking tape, crappy discount tape is not even worth the time. It's usually so flimsy, it doesn't do anything but maybe make you feel better about your pack job. That feeling goes away quickly with a line over. I'm not (and I don't think anyone is at this point) 100% sure that the tape will totally prevent a line over, but it has been tested for almost two years by many (probably longer, but I don't know, I'm sure Nick has some stories of crusty jumpers back in the day using tailgates with sliders packed half-way up). All of those who tried it that I know are still using it and speaking highly of it. I also jump with someone who SWEARS by a tailgate on all jumps, yes, slider jumps as well. He has had great results for well over a year. I know others have been doing this for years.

Hey Brian, good post! Not only does a large hole mesh slider at terminal (non-vented) lead to better heading, it seems that large-hole mesh sliders that are Oversized may be the next big thing in slider up sub-terminal base. Don't quote me. Vented canopy, slider terminal; small hole mesh is the ticket. Put a slider on an Ace, all bets are off (heading wise). Opinion based on experience. Many besides yours truly's experience. Personal terminal pack; non-vented mojo as most of my terminal experience (about 160 jumps mojo terminal), a flick is my new one and I've done the same with great result with the only difference being a small hole mesh slider. Also many ace jumps at terminal, 60+, but no more, that's for sure. (I know there are many Ace fans around, but in my heart I know that the Ace is not the answer once a slider is added to the mix)--- Anyway..., my pack is; Pro pack, hidden stabilizers, no micro-reefing, 3 outers rolled very tight- inwards! and center cell wrapping the outside cells only, not the pack job. (4 seconds to terminal, all great headings and no snivel)-(Can you really make a base canopy snivel without a sail?). It's hard to explain the center cell part, but it's the only way I pack with a slider and to me it makes sense. No matter if it's a large hole (non-vented canopy) or small hole (vented canopy) slider, I use cut down micro bands (clear or black) and wrap it 2 times on left center c-line (I've done one band on each center c, and have not seen any difference). I always use masking tape on my brake lines, two times around with quality 3M type tape, even legal bridge sort of sub-term slider stuff. I'm just getting into slider sizes and can't really post on that subject. There are wiser men (general human meaning, not sexist) than me. Thanks JJ. This is really a great subject (thanks Y) that has not been discussed or even mentioned enough. Not all terminal jumps have a no object strike potential, even wingsuit. When you are clearing ledges etc., terminal heading is as important as many typically slider down technical type jumps. Hopefully, I'll see all of you sometime at some terminal exit point. See you soon BPS. --No signature, but you know who I am. I like it better that way. Edited to say I edited to fix some really shitty spelling. Now go jump!

The need to feel important and have ones ego stroked; it leeds many to regret. Sadly, I'm not at all surprised Tony. Luv you man. Cement shoes? For whom....

Ah yes, low pulls. They are quite fun and quite common in base. I am very fond of terminal low pulls, but they can bite you. After large numbers of such jumps, you do develop an "eye" for distance at high speed making 3-4 second canopy rides very repeatable and a huge rush. The bite is brutal however, as any small problem is multiplied many times over, and to go home in the bus with lights is not fun for you or your mates. I'll share 2 low pull stories, I'm not proud but I'm still here. 900 ft cliff, 15 jumps so far from it with my wingsuit, getting 15-16 seconds but trying to eek maybe 1 second more on this jump. Low pulls with a wingsuit are very different from terminal as the sight picture changes very slowly. So slowly in fact that you have to make yourself pull at some point, while in terminal base you have to make yourself NOT pull until some point. So there I am, taking it deeper, a bit deeper....WOW! Too deep, PULL. I think I'm too low this time, a thought backed up by the one story house that is coming into my peripheral vision as the canopy snivels a bit. I hit the ground with most of a canopy, arms zipped in, and toggles stowed for the next jump. Unhurt. A million dollar lesson for .79 Same lesson for .69; Full terminal base jump, extremely current at the gorgeous object, taking very deep delays. I'm aware that the smallest problem can be crater time, and I am very meticulous with my gear, especially pilot chutes and deployment techniques. After a 13 sec+ delay I pitch at the usual around 250 ft or so, and wait for the opening..........SHIT! What was probably only a fraction of a second delay in the deployment process was VERY obvious. Once you grow accustomed to the time it takes for stuff to do it's thing, any tiny discrepancy shows up almost instantly. In these situations, you actually think full thoughts "this is it, too low, fuck". Then I felt the canopy stand me up, but the ground was right there and still moving fast. I was looking down between my feet and knew I was going to hit, then the slider banged down. Try to follow this part; as soon as the slider hit the links, my feet hit the ground. Not slammed the ground, no broken bones, no falling down. It was as if I had just jumped off a curb. Just standing there as my canopy fell down over my head, my arms down at my sides, my mouth dry and open. I did not need to take a single step, didn't even need to lean to retain balance. It was as if I had done a perfect flare for a stand up landing. Huh? I'm still not sure exactly what happened, but the 3 of us that were there came up with a possible scenario. As soon as the slider came down and the bottom skin inflated, the canopy almost snapped to a stop. It would have then surged forward and down trying to inflate and pressurize to fly, but my body was at that exact sweet spot and I won the lottery. Pretty bizarre, but it happened and I'm happy. How many lives left now? I was even told by another jumper that canopies don't behave like that and blah, blah.... Please, if anyone has any ideas or similar experiences (hope not) let's hear it. Moral-don't pull so low you kill yourself, fuck up your jumping mates night, and make the sport look bad. (not to mention look like a total tosser to the base community) Pilot chute hesi's do happen, you must plan for it. Even a small margin for error is a lot better than none.

Thanks Lazy. Yes, there was a time, 200 jumps. Enjoy the sport and the learning curve, it's great fun.

Nick, you really amaze me with your ability to convey. Thanks for jumping in when you do, I know I'm not the only one smiling when I read your posts. JJ, I only used your name because you are one solid F'n base jumper. MD#4-one hard c*nt. And you're a sick fuck, but you know that. Base jumpers usually skydive. Most I know are not skydivers, it is different than it used to be I think. The title of the post still pisses me off. Every base death I hear about just makes me want to shake every jumper I know. Shake them and make sure they are as sharp as they could ever be, fresh on every possible scenario on every single jump. I want to see posts about how and what and why, not bullshit sensationalism. When our brothers and sisters die, I feel the loss.

> "I'd like to think some of us have risen above that mentality... just pointing out that it exists in some facets of life doesn't convince me that it's a good attitude." You say "respect breeds respect," but I see "experience breeds respect." You are correct, I should go and edit that line to make you look silly. In base experience does breed respect. Not just experience, but it's a big factor. That's the way it is in almost any activity. I see the angle you are coming from, but I don't think it is about "rising above" anything. Sometimes it is just not ok to assume you can come into a group and expect to get away with subtle innuendos, dark humor, local expresions and the like. I'm sure you would feel similar if I was talking to your mom and dad the way your little sister does. I'm not implying it is ok for the subway gang to kick your ass for busting in with the 411, but you can't expect them to welcome you as their own. Have a pleasant afternoon.

Thank you for your reply. First of all I totally disagree that my post has less taste than someone referring to deaths and serious injuries as "another one bites the dust." It might be low on the taste meter, but it's miles above the that crap. Didn't mean to offend you with the plane jumper thing (yeah right), I am a working plane jumper myself. I just wanted to make the distinction clear as folks like Robin are always blurring the lines by calling base jumpers "extreme skydivers". I hate that. I have seen so many plane jumpers get all pissed off at their grandma when she begs them to quit that dangerous suicide sport. "But Granny, you have no idea what you are talking about, it's safer than driving with you in South Florida when you are late to the early bird special!" Now if Grandma had 5600 jumps, they would probably think her words wise or take the joke in stride. "Ha ha Granny, you are sooo funny! Grandma, Grandma..... are you awake?" Now if this comment came from JJ, I wouldn't even flinch. Folks that have been there can use black humor, folks that haven't..... Next time you are in a subway, listen up to the way the tough looking local crowd talks to each other. Now pick a few choice greeting they use on each other, walk right into the middle of a group, and try them for yourself. Let me know how it goes. I'm just rambling here, but I hope you get my point. Respect breeds respect. Ok you valley wannabe poser plane jumpin high pullin two chute wearin AAD equiped sissy fruitbooter. Nice talking with you. -Finn Cute quote to sign my post with- "Just say no to drugs" Nancy Reagan

Hey Nicholas aka Lazyfrog, the title of your post really sucks. "Another one.." is a person that has friends, a family and other basers that consider him/her family. I don't want to flame for no reason, but I feel strongly about a non base jumper posting on a base forum with tabloid style headlines like this crap. I realize the post itself isn't offensive, but the subject heading sure is. Living in Switzerland does not make it ok, nor does a non fatal incident. Please post shit like this on one of the skydiver gossip forums where real base jumpers won't be around to piss off. I'm sure all the other 200 jump wonder plane jumpers will be all shook up, ooooh! Come back when you know something about the subjects and people you post about. Gabi was my friend and will be missed. I hope the secondary exit point she loved so much in the valley is re-named after her. To me it's Gabi's Spot. Maybe shorten it to G Spot for the hook factor.... -Finn This forum started out ok, good questions from those curious, good info from some of the greats, etc... but now it is becoming yet another place where plane jumpers post their cute comments back and forth to each other. I hope it gets back to BASEics.

you may want to contact Larsen and Brusgaard. They are a great company and from my own experience I wouldn't be suprised if they sent you out a new one...for free.
