Key word here is "tend" to handle it better; from my own experience, and from many, many comments made from others' observations, the Nitro has a remarkable ability to not have that typical "breathing" and "bouncing" tendency in rough air. Bill, now that you have a lot of jumps on the Nitro, would you not agree?

  7. Go for it, it's a hell of a lot of fun. I had been a skydiver for 25 years before I made my first tandem; I do tandems every weekend and I was 47 when I did my first one.
  8. No, friend, that isn't all we do. If you really feel that way maybe you should spend a little more time listening to how most manufacturers advise, mentor, coach, teach, and truly care about our customers' safety and well-being. Perhaps you have some personal experience that makes you say that? If you'd like to share that please do; if not please don't point fingers of blame in the direction of those who truly do care about safe skydiving. And in another post you mentioned jumping a round; I am sure that I can provide one for you if that's what you'd like to jump.

  10. No, there really is an in-between, and the Nitro is exactly that. The Nitro offers noticable performance advantages over a Sabre2/Pilot (class) of canopy, but much more user-friendly than the twitchy Stilleto (class) of canopy.
  11. Actually the Blade has a much shorter lineset than the Nitro, and the aspect ratio of the canopies strikes a great balance between performance and good manners.

  14. Actually, the Nitro is a bit less "twitchy" than the Stilleto, is not quite as tapered in its planform, and has certainly more well behaved and predictable openings. As for the intermediate canopy, yes it's in development, but "be patient, grasshopper". As to the "modifications" to the Nitro from Precision in building the Nitron, that consisted of leaving out the spanwise reinforcement tapes that are present in the Nitro, and Precision uses the "slippery" zp whereas we use the packing-friendly Gelvenor fabric; the patterns for surfaces and ribs are the same.
  15. That's pretty accurate, but I'd take exception to your placement of Diablo in that flow. I'm not sure where exactly I'd rate that canopy, but being a seven cell, I'd probably place the Diablo more in the class of Spectre, also a tapered seven cell.

Actually, as long as you are pulling the steering line slowly through the twisted lines, it won't cause any problem/damage to the lines; it is of course very hard to pull that toggle because of such tension on the control line. So, in the event of the situation again, go ahead and do a two-handed pull on the toggle and get it down! so that you can un-do that line twist situation. In other words, your figuring that doing the hard pull on the toggle not being the way to go is not correct, it IS the way to go.

If it's better than the Ic 365 its gotta be pretty goodQuote A friend of mine recently got two 389's and while he loves the way they fly, he has experienced damage on both of them in a very low number of jumps. Anyone else had to have repairs done on these canopies? I'd like to be able to help him figure out if it's his dz's packing or if others, too, are seeing some of these problems.
  21. I can offer a simple solution so that it doesn't result in chopping the main when line twists do occur on these canopies. Simply reach up and get the steering toggle that will turn the canopy in the direction it needs to turn in order to fly out of the line twist, and slowly pull that toggle to initiate a turn. The canopy will immediately correct itself. Just don't pull the control line down too quickly or pump the toggle, to avoid friction with the other lines.
  22. I have been asked about this a few times, so I thought I'd post this. Someone commented recently that their drop zone has had several tandem cutaways because of line twists on their Icarus (or Precision) tandems. These canopies do not have deployment brakes. While I can't really give an explanation as to "why" these dz's are having these (I do plenty of tandems and it is very very rare for me) I can offer a simple solution so that it doesn't result in chopping the main when line twists do occur on these canopies. Simply reach up and get the steering toggle that will turn the canopy in the direction it needs to turn in order to fly out of the line twist, and slowly pull that toggle to initiate a turn. The canopy will immediately correct itself. Just don't pull the control line down too quickly or pump the toggle, to avoid friction with the other lines.
  23. As someone who has been testing these configurations on canopies in development for many years, I can answer your question... To put it in basic terms (but keep in mind that certain canopies respond in slightly different ways), the more towards the center of the canopy you place the UCL, the stronger the flair, the firmer the opening, and the heavier the toggle pressure and slightly slower turn rate (usually). On the contrary, the more toward the outboard cells you place the UCL then you get lighter toggle pressure, reduced flair power, and snappier toggle turns. It is always a compromise of these issues when configuring the control lines on the trailing edge of the canopy. For instance, a canopy design that has an inherently strong flair can have the lines more outboard to give light toggle pressure without sacrificing good landings, etc., etc. ps I just saw the part about the stall; the more outboard the control lines, the deeper the control stroke it takes to stall the canopy, and of course visa versa.
  24. This is only an educated guess, but I'd say the outboard ribs see more airflow and movement than the center of a canopy. Think of how much faster the outside of a canopy flies in a turn, and also the inside of a turn sees a lot of de-pressurizing and re-pressurizing, whereas the center seems to stay more balanced. As far as which fabric tends to fray first, I really haven't ever noticed a tendency for zp vs. 0-3 fabric.
