It's time for you to expand your horizons, Dave.
-
Both! It'll be interesting to see the differences.

An 18 year old Glenmorangie scotch. A 12 year old Glenmorangie Port Wood scotch. A 15 year old Signatory Vintage Islay scotch. A 12 year old Macallan scotch. An 18 year old Elijah Craig single barrel Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. A Blanton's single barrel bourbon whiskey (awesome bottle and cork). A couple bottles of Jack Daniels single barrel whiskey. A couple bottles of plain old everyday Jack. A 12 year old Chivas Regal scotch. A big bottle of the Captain. An almost empty bottle of Smirnoff citrus vodka. It's nice to have an active rigger for an s/o - most of those bottles are from saves. Just looking at it all makes me tipsy.

How to kill your friends
skybytch replied to WeakMindedFool's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Cass, Quit kicking yourself. Everybody takes out a formation at least once in their career; I doubt that any of us mean to do it. Most of the time the impacts are minor, occasionally they are not. This is one of the risks we take in jumping with other people. Everybody made it back to the packing area in one piece. Everybody learned something. All is good. -

Sorry, that was mean. We'll be there for a beer or two on the 26th.

You better remember me, Mr Orgasmizer, you lived in my closet for how long? Bah fucking humbug to you too!
-
Oh cool. We want to hit the road north by early afternoon; I was afraid you guys wouldn't be coming through until mid-afternoon. We'll probably be there around 11:30 too.
-
We were ice skating last night. Over the PA came the song "Walking in a Winter Wonderland." So I started singing along - "Walking round in women's underwear..."

Dunno how the cops over there are, but I highly suggest using "sir/ma'am" if you ever get pulled over in the States. Here it's a pretty safe bet that being respectful to the cop that just pulled you over will give them a good reason to exercise their discretion in your favor.
-
It's not a reflex action. I have a choice in how I talk to other people. Calling someone "sir" or "ma'am," regardless of their age/race/social class, might brighten their day; I see that as a good thing. Saying "sir" or "ma'am" to the cop that just pulled me over might save me a ticket; I also see that as a good thing.
-
Yup. It's the respect thing; it's how I was raised. Now I especially enjoy using it when talking to people who totally wouldn't expect it - like the cashier at the convenience store.
-
Yeah, I want to talk him into not packing tandem reserves anymore but he needs the money.

So you're saying when it's cold out and the only shoes I can find are my Tevas, I should suck it up and let my feet freeze? I don't fucking think so. As long as the socks don't stink, Tevas with socks are okay in my book.

Dammit! Why didn't someone tell me this 15 years ago?!?!? Just think of all the money I could have saved by renting instead of buying!!
-
Someone I know is approaching his 100th save. I'm looking for suggestions on how to mark this milestone when it occurs. Pieing is not an option.

How much did it cost you from start to finish?
skybytch replied to futurehighflyer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
$700-ish for student jumps ($125 FJC and first s/l, 6 s/l program jumps at $45, 4 "AFP" jumps at $75). $900 for first rig (used - Racer SST, 26' NAA round reserve, Fury 220 main). $400 for first jumpsuit, alti and helmet. $150-ish for jumps between getting off student status and the A license ($12 to 10,500). That's in 1990 dollars. -
Dude you're not kidding...tornados roll through the Ft. Campbell, KY area every now and again...I'd much rather have the ground shake... I'll third that. Earthquakes can be kinda fun. Hurricanes suck even if they don't flood your house, and they really suck when they do. Besides, a 3.7? That's not scary, that's like putting a quarter in the bed!

Going on my first jump on Friday.

Listen to your instructors. Ask questions of your instructors. Ignore what anybody else says for right now - and other than the oh-so-helpful advice below, I include myself in that anybody else. Although well-meant, many "experienced" jumpers give terrible advice. The time to start listening to people other than your instructors talk about how to skydive is after you are done with your student jumps. There is a lot of good information here. Take whatever questions you may have after reading any of that info to your instructors. There are a couple good books out there - "Parachuting, The Skydivers Handbook" and "Jump!" Both are available through Amazon, or your dz may have copies of one or both. Either is worth the $20. Also, download (or buy) a copy of the Skydiver's Information Manual (SIM) on USPA's website. Landing isn't hard. Landing well takes some practice. Don't forget to have fun. -
Eh, boobies are okay; I mean I'm glad I have a set and all that, but they really don't make life worth living.

Alcohol and... and.... dammit, I forgot what the other one was!

If you don't have plans to see anything or anybody in particular in the LA basin I'd suggest switching from 5 to 99 in Sacramento (northern California - be sure to stop by Skydance Skydiving in Davis, which is less than 15 minutes from I5, and Lodi, which is right on I5 south of Sacramento). Take 99 to Bakersfield, then pick up 58 East (Cal City is off 58). That will eventually drop you onto I15; head south to get to Elsinore. From there it's easy to get to Perris and then down to San Diego (and Mexico!). This route avoids driving on the worst of L.A.'s freeways - on a bad traffic day it will cut hours of frustration off the trip. The scenery along 99 and across 58 is also much nicer than it is along I5, imho.
