  1. Is there a website out there like shutterfly or blueyonder where I can upload my photo's and people can DL them for free at full res? I know most won't want other people to be able to do that but I'm trying to share some photo's of a recent trip with friends without mailing out a dozen CD's.
  2. The aperture setting is something I'm going to have to read more about too. I suspect though its a lot like ISO speeds in that you can stick it on pretty much the same one all day. The nice thing is, as you change the aperture setting the viewfinder gets visably lighter and darker... thus it should be really easy to set it to the right setting and get the lighting right. That said... I seem to remember there being something about depth of field related to the aperture setting too... as I said, something to read up on.
  3. Hell, looking at their profile and posting history I'd put money on them not even being a jumper.
  4. Oh my god that is a nice lens. As I said I only picked it up from the post office yesterday morning and last night was my first go with it. (Running it on a Canon 300D). No electrics doesn't mean your camera is going to have a problem with it – it just means you have to do certain things yourself rather than let your all singing and dancing camera do it for you. This means you have to set the aperture yourself (with a ring on the lens) and you have to do the focus it yourself (this ought not be an issue for most camera flyers right? I thought the prevailing theory was to lock your focus off in manual at the right distance then fly your body to maintain that distance). I hate auto as the lens always wants to seek instead of shoot at those crucial moments. It's much shorter than the stock 18-55 lens (it's about a half to two thirds the length). But it is rather heavier (all that quality glass I guess). As I said it's £65 off ebay, and that's the buy-it-now price not simply a bargain I found. If anyone wants a proper review of this lens with some pickies and measurements etc I'll take a stab at posting one although I don't doubt there are more qulified on here to do so. Otherwise do a google search and there's quite a wealth of info out there about it already.
  5. You are misinformed. Your lack of knowledge about this affair speaks volumes for the reliability of your thinking in general and the credibility of this bizarre anti-Semitic conspiracy theory of yours. The tube bombs went off within a period of 50 seconds of one another. There was no time to warn anyone. After that the tube system was shut down. People were warned. Yes, the tube company itself (a private entity) thought that at least one of the explosions was a power surge, possibly secondary to a bomb. People then got on busses (what were they supposed to do, stand round outside the stations?). Then nearly an hour later the bomb on the bus went off. There was no warning to be given - no one knew anyone was going to bomb a bus. As for your prattling about the Israelis - they were warned not to go to their conference after the subway bombs and before the bus bomb. There's absolutely nothing sinister about that - there was an hour gap remember. As for killing Muslims only making sense if the bombers were not Muslims – you realize the police have already identified the bombers right? Three of them at least were Muslims from Yorkshire.
  6. The above doesn't really tally with Britain. I can't speak for Europe as a whole but that certainly doesn't hold true for the UK. Britain is about as much a multicultural and cosmopolitan society as you can imagine. There are large populations here from across the old empire and many more besides. Some groups do tend to cluster but this is generally by choice and stems from the strong sense of community/family inherent in many of the cultures who have immigrated to this country in the last century. It is quite common for example, to find families buying out every property down a street and creating their own little town within a town. Whilst that could be described as an enclave... no one's being forced into it... and I fail to see why they'd harbor any resentment over their decision.
  7. seems you're able to see into the future... they now are suggesting that it's likely the bombers were suicide bombers.
  8. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest though. We have an exceptionally multicultural society here with large numbers of people from all faiths and cultures – including those faiths and cultures we are currently fighting a war against. I posted on the day that I felt it was more likely to be British Muslims as opposed to foreign bombers simply because there would be far fewer security hurdles to overcome that way.
  9. They're not saying the bus bomber was a suicide bomber - they're saying they don't know... only that they know he died on the bus. They're say it may be that the bomb was intended for the subway and the bomber screwed up... but they don't know yet. At least that's how the reports I've heard are telling it.
  10. Good news indead. Clicky for the lazy: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4674463.stm
  11. I recently borrowed a spectre 170 in order to do a load of back to back lifts. I experianced the exact same kind of openings as anvilbrother describes. The break lines on that canopy were far far too short - I figured they needed letting out 3-4 inches at least. I put the odd openings down to the breaks being too deap during opening because of their shrinkage.
  12. c'mon man, you're turning this thread from a justified critique of a mid level military commanders decision which has quite nasty political results into an open bashing on the US and their "Commander in Chimp". This has nothing to do with Bush or the US overall political system... why bring them up? All you do is cause the thread to degenerate into bitching about the US/"US Haters". In the end the original complaint is lost entirely.
  13. 1. The order only came under review today because the papers kicked up a stink. The fact that it was still standing today was either because it was forgotten about or because the "powers that be" wanted it to still be standing and it only got rescinded because of the media interest. As to which is the truth of the matter I'm sure we'll never know. 2. The order related to them on leave etc. so I presume the'd be in civies... but I'm sure some military type (present as opposed to historical) would know for sure.
  14. I wish! We're in the middle of a heat wave - my thermometer hasn't seen the low side of 30 deg C in nearly a week. It's too much I tell's ya.
  15. Oddly enough your thread coincides with the arrival in the post of a Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens this morning. It gets great reviews on the web and is hailed as one of the few very budget lenses which actually produces great results. The advertising blurb is all about how its Russian space program optics etc and how the Kiev based company is a respected manufacturer out there. I'll take a look at the lens tonight and let you know if you like. Costs the princely sum of £65 off Ebay and comes with a canon eos mount. There's no electrics in the lens mind so you have to run the camera on manual.
  16. And I only took issue with the claim that we'd be speaking German. I think that is highly unlikely whatever else might have been going on in the rest of Europe. In any event this is all something of an asside from the orriginal thread about how the US airforce sent out signals that it was apparently willing to give in to terrorism this last week. I hope we haven't killed the thread with our history discussion. Tea anyone?
  17. The UK could not have invaded Germany alone no. Russia could have though... and pretty much did... we got there late hence Berlin being an island on the Soviet post war map. The air war over Britain was won again before the US got involved. The Battle of Britain was won in Aug/Sept/Oct of 40... you guys didn't pull your fingers out till Dec of the next year. By that time dailight raids over the UK were suicide and had been canned in just the same way as their plans to invade had over a year earlier. Night raids were still going on but we were giving better than we were getting already by that point. By the time the US had been in the war 3 months we were already putting out 1000 bomber raids over Germany... something the Germans never managed against us. You're not going to win an argument by claiming that the UK was getting its arsed kicked by the Luftwaffe... that couldn't be further from the truth.
  18. You are doing little else but demonstraiting a complete lack of knowledge about WWII in general. Germany was beaten by the Russians, not by anyone this side of the Rhine. The Russians accounted for 80% of German losses... the Western Allies accounted for a mere 700,000 or so kills compaired to the Soviet total of going on 3 million. In addition to this, Germany could never have mounted or sustained an invasion of the UK - go read up on the results of the exercises conducted by Sandhurst in relation to Operation Sea Lion and note the outcomes... and note the fact their exercises by nescesity ignored the massive naval superiority enjoyed by the RN and assumed a zero RAF presence.
  19. Operation Sea Lion was canned more than a year before the US even entered the war. A better knowledge of history and you'd know what that meant without having to google it.
  20. Strictly speaking you need a packing certificate signed by the CCI (center chief instructor) and then sent to the BPA for their records (they endorse it and send it straight back to you). There are very few DZ's who actually enforce this rule though... but it is there and I think it's growing in importance. You'll also need to be a paid up member of the BPA as you're then covered by the BPA insurance policy... although I can imagine this going unchecked at a lot of places... but like I said, that's the rule. In order to get a packing certificate you need to take a packing test. Basically this involves demonstrating a good ability to pack. In practice it will probably involve an instructor cutting a canopy away and messing it up completely and you having to fix any rigging problems with it to his satisfaction before packing it. This is sometimes waived at some places if you have a large number of jumps and they'll simply issue you with the certificate. The old certificate stated each combination of main and container with which you were familiar. I believe the new certificates simply list the mains and containers seperately as opposed to actual combinations of the two... but I'm not 100% sure as I have the old style. If you want to progress here to being an advanced packer who can pack reserves you have to have held a packing certificate for 2 years before you can take the relevent exams.
  21. Just to clarify, I certainly don't blame any Indians. It is the decision I think is wrong, not the people to whom the decision applies. Nor, for that matter do I even blame the Head Chief - I'm sure he had nothing to do with the decision in question and I have no doubt that he himself is probably spitting bullets right now that some nitwit military commander issued the order in the first place. (Probably not the thread for it but I came up with a name for the Head Chief Indian... "Big Chief Smirking Bush". )
  22. You'll be a better swooper and alround canopy pilot if you buy the sabreII 150. Do you want to be a good swooper and pilot or a crappy one?
  23. I think it's currently "under review" as of this morning because of the fury with which it's been attacked in the papers. One has to wonder how long it would have been in place without review if the news agencies hadn't caught wind of it though. IMO, yes it's and understandable stance to take in the way's Newbie outlines... but overall it is totally reprehensible. It sends out completely the wrong message. It says to terrorists that they won. The message is clear - bomb places and US troops won't be allowed to go there because it's too scary for them or for the citizens back home. It was a stupid decision to make.
  24. Club fee is a tenner I think, annually (by financial year now I think). Vibe's nice and casual through the week, jumps on tick and settle up at the end of the day.
  25. I seem to remember Wrongway might be. PM him and ask.
