The ratchet is attached to the helmet with a bolt and nylon lock nut. One of these on my helmet would always come lose as I moved the ratchet arround. I dabbed a bit of superglue on the nut and that solved it. Were your ratchet(s) moving more freely than usual - possably indicating a lose nut? I think the grab part of the ratchet has a little spring inside... maybe tha gave out or had come away some how? Other than that, I've never had the ratchet slip. I've had two different ratchets from them too and they're done up TIGHT for my camera helmet. I guess sometimes shit just happens. That sucks man, they're nice helmets.

hehe, yup. My New Zealand friend is always distraught when he converts prices here back into his home currency... but then he's on three times the salery over here so it's not so bad. He just wishes he could have his UK salery and his NZ cost of living.

CNN story - South African skydiver mishap survived!

Guess that solves the debate then... when you have a double mal - try to make it to the power lines. -
That is very very interesting. Did anyone read Red Storm Rising (Tom Clancy)? I can see some curious parallels between that fiction, and this commentary.

Try to make sure your bridle is as tightly stowed as possible then so that IF the flap does come open, there's less to catch air. If you can't stop the flap coming open then it might be worth talking to a local rigger about converting your pin to twin pin teflon. It depends who you talk to how popular this is, but riggers round here really like the mod.

Cool!

It's a scam - had excatly the same thing happen to me a year ago: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=858862#858862

Chill out guys, seriously. I apologise to all if any were offended. Specifically to Jeffrey; I apologise. I seriously thought Jeffrey would find some humour in my post, and so too would some of the people who regularly post here. Perhaps if I explained where I was coming from it would help people understand that I genuinely was not trying to make a personal attack, veiled or otherwise. It really was a joke - not about his screen name, but about the number of people who have raised questions about it in the past. Dozens of people here have questioned the "peaceful" part of his screen name and I thought he, along with others who have noticed this trend, would find it funny. Jeffrey deals with this same question repeatedly on here, and had just faced the same thing again when someone suggested he should be called “Cheerfuljeffrey”... (which he found funny) so I made a post about it that I thought he would find funny. Ok, Jeffrey has not found if funny. I apologise for that. I thought it would be, and it really was not intended as an attack. If you don't believe me - here's just a sample of the comments I'm talking about - the posts below are why I thought Jeffrey would find my post funny: Oh, and the first one's even from a moderator... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1150900#1150900 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=915299;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#915299 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=969036;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#969036 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1087502;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#1087502 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=967581#967581 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=967601;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#967601 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=912724;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#912724 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1076786;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#1076786 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=956317;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#956317 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1165613;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#1165613 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1198349;search_string=peaceful%20jeffrey;#1198349 Peace.

On my mates Odyssey the pud simply sits in the mouth of the BOC like a hackey. His is approx 18 months old so I can't comment on any design changes after that point. The Wings pud is different in that it is secured under the bridal cover.
-
Current Wings pud's don't secure in the BOC.

You’ll never fit in with that kinda attitude. The best advice I can give is to ask your instructors and to take your time. You're not really in a position in your skydiving "career" to buy your own gear until at least after you've got your A license and even then a lot of people are better of waiting a short while. Try this: http://www.uwesu.net/skydiveuwe/gearfaq.shtml? It’s something I’ve written for the uni club I’m involved with. It’s far from being all the info you need. In fact, 90% of it simply tells you to ask your instructors. It does give you an over view though and would be a start as to basically what kit there is out there. I reiterate though, your first point of call MUST be your local instructors.
-
This is one of the instances where I favour the stick over the carrot.

oo oo - pick me, pick me!

It’s nice to hear of requirements like this. Clear this with your instructor BEFORE you give it a go and needless to say this should only be done up high… but the common method of solving the problem you have is to wrap the break lines round your hands once or twice and then try it. Have your instructor ok this and give you a back up plan in case of entanglement should it fail to re-inflate correctly. A small risk but hey, this sports all about managing risks.

By the way - did any other Brits get this booklet yet? Have you just binned it or have you put it safely away in your air raid shelter like you're supposed to have - in between your cans of beans and water purifier...

Anyone want a new hobby?

you mean the bit that follows on from that: "We wouldn't have bothered, but Blunkett insisted"... David Blunkett being a high profile but blind politician over here.
-
Which advice would you follow? The Govt. flyer they spent god knows how many millions on dropped though my door today.... and straight into the bin. http://www.preparingforemergencies.gov.uk/ http://www.preparingforemergencies.co.uk/ (the humour in this post requires you to be able to read one or two lines of text on the linked websites. Apologies in advance to those of short attention span).
-
Nothing wrong with that - it does indeed increase the time you have to deal with any situation. But if you were in the UK you would find yourself severely hampered in what you would be able to do if you restricted yourself to this figure only. You might also find yourself being instructed by the JM that you were to pull lower than this on a given dive. This would all be on safety grounds.

What chance would a complete whuffo have of surviving a jump?

Worked on Point Break didn't it? -
I've long wondered what would happen if someone were to start a poll seeking suggestions as to what his name should be changed to. Of course I concluded that one could never do such a thing, as I felt quite sure it would have been taken as a personal attack by the subject. Therefore please consider the suggestions below as merely an illustration of what a poll might have looked like had some wag created one. Belligerentjeffrey Argumentativejeffrey Aggressivejeffrey Opinionatedjeffrey And please be certain; this post is in no way intended to solicit any further such suggestions. I must admit though, I find it remarkable how many times people feel the need to comment on the fact that “peacefuljeffrey” seems to be a terrible misnomer.
