  1. maybe you're right... still wouldn't use any of the words listed though...
  2. 61% dixie... although arround half the answers were not at all applicable. eg 20 is a woodlouse... I went for "Pill", as you there is a type of woodlouse known as the "Pill woodlouse"... still not exactly applicable though.
  3. If you repeatedly smack the bottom of the bottle with a shoe the cork works it's way out. Sound's unbelievable I know, but I've done it myself a couple of times - it really works... although it can take a few minutes of patting... all depends on how much you want a drink of wine see. This solution also works if you’re caught somewhere without a corkscrew at all.

    Formula one

My apologies – I read your post as saying that because BAR was based in the UK it wasn’t an American interest in F1... sure their interest is more financial than practical - but it's still an interest.
  5. A wide angle lens goes straight on the front of the mirror/film/ccd etc of the camera - ie it's the only glass you use. A wide angle conversion lens secures in front of your ordinary lens, converting that first lens by whatever factor the conversion lens has. (eg 0.5 etc). The problem you come across is that it's quite common for people to drop the 'conversion' bit when they're talking about conversion lenses. On your TRV you're looking at buying a conversion lens as you're not going to be removing the stock bit of glass Sony puts in the body of the camera. If you're buying for an SLR you might be after either - you could switch the whole lens assembly or you could put a second lens in front of it.

BAR = British American Racing... even if it is just down the road from Hinton DZ.
  7. It’s worth it - for me. Is it worth it for you? Only you can make that call. The risk of injury is probably not as high as you’re billing it. Don’t get me wrong, the risk is there... but it can be mitigated though intelligent choices. Be intelligent; be safe; make your call.
  8. no... but I watched a guy cut away a good main on his first jump because he couldn’t look up to see it. He told me everything felt like it opened ok but because he couldn’t ‘check canopy’ as instructed, he cutaway – just to be on the safe side. then there's the perennial story of students who cutaway because they couldn't pump the slider back up...
  9. c'mon guys, I expect better from you. No one here knows the full facts... all we do know is that papers never report everything... and they don’t always get things right. What if this guy was mentally handicapped and refusing treatment? Sure we here can all choose to skydive, but we have the mental capacity to make that choice... what if we didn’t? Would it be right to stick us on a plane? Now we don't know if this chap has mental problems or not... but the fact that he was sectioned under the mental health act demonstrates that at least two physicians did believe he could have been so mentally disabled that he was a danger to himself. In circumstances where a mentally disabled person is doing something which causes harm to themselves... yes I think we as responsible members of the community have a duty to act to stop them from harming themselves. If that was the case here that would be no different simply because it’s food that’s killing him. If they are mentally disabled of course. Why have I been speaking in the past tense? Well see The Sun is not exactly what I’d call a reliable news source. See this guy was sectioned 1 week ago and went home on Monday when doctors said he wasn’t mentally disabled. They had their suspicions when he put on 14 stone after leaving a boarding school specializing in the treatment of his syndrome. When he became abusive and walked out of the care home he was working with doctors alerted social services. The Sun article leads with the fact that he was carted off and imprisoned for a month... truth is this guy was in hospital for a week while people tried to help him out. Another interesting news article on the front of the Sun today was that Tom Cruise was dating Miss Viagra. Sadly the Sun sat right next to the Mirror who’s front page article was that Tom Cruise was dating Penelope Cruz... hahahaha, guess newspapers aren’t always right. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/southern_counties/4285587.stm http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005082426,,00.html http://www.mirror.co.uk/frontpages/
  10. I’m not sure if you're joking or not... None of my posts were meant to offend - they were a genuine salute to German engineering. Whatever way you look at it, those items invented more than 60 years ago are still amongst the best designs in their field. Irrespective of the intended use of the inventions, that fact alone is worthy of respect. I hold much of Germany’s WWII equipment in very high regard; I see no shame in doing so.

    Hunting poll

I just read it as him saying his heart is beating strongly from the adrenaline... could be wrong though. Either way it could have perhaps been said more clearly to avoid confusion.
  12. Ah I see what you were talking about now - I'd forgotten about the one sided box thingy holding a belt. The 34 also came with a saddle-bag magazine but I think the 42 wouldn't accept it. People forget that German WWII engineering and invention was the basis for a hell of a lot of today’s weaponry - the AK47/74 series is simply a straight knock off of the MP43/44; the FG42 spawned the M14 and FN-FAL; the MP38/40 turned into the MP5 series and as you say the MG42 became the M60/62... That’s before you even get into their rockets and the ICBM's they've turned into.
  13. Depends on your definition of "better" I guess. The 42 was simply the 34 made from stamped metal and die-cast components - thus a cheap as chips version which could be knocked out much faster under wartime conditions. The 34 was made from machined steel billets and had screws instead of spot-wealds - much nicer... but slower to make and more expensive. Yup – known as a drum or saddle magazine. Typical German ingenuity it fed one round from the left, then one from the right to maintain the weapon's balance.
  14. records only count if all participants survive for 24 hours.
  15. The gun I posted is perfectly legal to own in the UK. Nice to see you're opting for the 34... the 42 just didn't have the build quality IMO. The 34 did infact come with a magazine though... just at 900rpm it was generally a better idea to use a belt.
  16. Part of it is the standard of reliability required and thus everything about the product must be made to very high tolerances. The other part is quite simply volume. Hundreds of thousands of that drill roll off an assembly line. Maybe millions of DVD players. Volume drives unit price down - I wonder if Cypres has even hit 100,000 units yet over it's total production so far? And again, at the end of the day if a DVD player doesn't work, you simply return it to the shop for a refund. I wonder how many of us kept the receipts to our asses.
  17. I always thought it was obviously a word association thing. Someone says "Trojan", the first thing that pop's into a lot of people's heads is "horse". "Horse" has obvious connotations.
  18. The conclusion CornisChris describes is the correct one for the UK biker population... not that I think any of it has a lot to do with the skydivers killing themselves. As he said it would be analogous to someone trained 20 years ago coming back and jumping a sub 100 VX on his first jumps... in general, that's simply not happening. So it must be a different factor in skydiving. Perhaps a better analogy would be if young kids on new bike licenses were allowed to buy bikes not fitted with limiters. They'd be going out and killing themselves all over the place on Honda Fireblades. Just like in skydiving where there's nothing stopping a newbie going out on a stiletto 120 if they choose to (assuming they can get away with it at the DZ of course). Under the circumstances, both rider and jumper are just as likely to pound in. We limit bike engines till the rider demonstrates proficiency on less powerful bikes. Only then does our national licensing agency allow them to ride more powerful bikes. We’re on the verge of having limits on the type of canopy people can jump till they demonstrate proficiency on less aggressive designs. If jumpers themselves don’t do something about it their national licensing agency will. I think that’s the analogy we ought to be looking at.
  19. Nope - that's not a requirement. People should check before they protest. Will buy one of these when I move back to the countryside... will be fun.

    Hunting ban

Just to remind you all... while there's nothing wrong with discussing hunting in general, the recent ban in the UK is in relation to a very specific way of hunting and as such entertains arguments quite distinct from some of those dealing with hunting in general. Previous legislation sought to prevent the hounds on a fox hunt from ripping the fox limb from limb at the end of the hunt. Instead the huntsmen were required to hold the dogs off and shoot the fox. That was all well and good and removed the pro-banner's most forceful arguments… and their most forceful footage. The huntsmen would have been fools not to stick with the rule, right? Well they couldn’t do it. One of the major facts which precipitated this current ban (together with general pressure from tree huggers of course) was the fact that some hunts were shown to be failing to keep to the compromise reached. They were still, for whatever reason, allowing the hounds to rip the crap out of the captured quarry. I have little sympathy with this action. Not only is it unnecessarily barbaric, it's downright stupid. Why play into the tree huggers hands like that? In summary, the govt. said: "hunting foxes with hounds is fine, so long as you don't let the dogs rip the fox into pieces at the end. If you flout this rule we'll stop you hunting altogether. Oh, you're flouting the rule... fine if you can't stick to the rules you loose your sport - don't say we didn't warn you". Whilst I am far from being anti-hunt, I personally find it relatively difficult to argue with that stance.
  21. THIEF!!! And put my ice cream back in the freezer too!
  22. Damnit man, now you have the Department of Paranoia crawling over this site. You said both "Hijack" and "Gun" in the same thread. Now we're all for it. Hang on... there's someone at the door...
