In 2008 30 jumpers died in the US – 11 of the 30 died under a good canopy, 37%. In 2009 16 jumpers died in the US - 7 of the 16 died under a good canopy, 44%. In 2010 21 jumpers died in the US - 13 of the 21 died under a good canopy, 62%. In 2011 if deaths under good canopies continue at the present rate there will no problem breaking last year’s record. Getting better every year. Sparky Good canopy = Anytime the jumper had deployed a good canopy and still died. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)

Rich, I posted this almost a month ago and I think it is a plan that will make a difference now. But you need DZO’s with the balls to do it. Sparky 19 April Like Dave said this has nothing to do with education it has to do with attitude and maturity. The only way to change attitude is with hard reality. This can only come from the DZO’s. Post a short list of realistic canopy rules where is will be seen by everyone that jumps at the DZ. Have manifest announce it every 15 minutes and point it out to all who manifest. At the bottom of the list in big bold letters announce “One strike and you are Out”. Let it be known that in one week or two weeks this will go into effect. And then stand by it with NO exceptions. Is there anything that you will not argue with? With you it is all “me me”. With your experience level you are not nearly as good as you think. Arrogance and selfishness is not what makes a good canopy pilot. It takes attitude and maturity, knowing your own limitations and understanding the consequence of your actions. I am done with this, it is not worth the aggravation. I just hope you don’t kill someone because the way you look at thing now makes you dangerous. Total misconception, Vince. Talk to some experienced people at your DZ. If they support that idea, tell them they are wrong and go ask someone else. Something about losing altitude in a turn and for part of the turn you are running down wind?

Argus ban discussion (Was Argus Ban List)
mjosparky replied to Coreefdiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
Peter, The report by the Polish authorities indicate that the jumper went in with nothing showing hence the controversy about the partially cut loop. I have attached a picture showing the front of the rig. You will notice that it appears that initial contact with the ground is above the chest strap and into the 3 rings. This is consistent with the jumper being a little head down as if reaching for handles or PC. The picture of the reserve on the ground is also consistent with an impact of this angle. The rebound energy produced after impact would cause the bag to be ejected forward over the head and shoulders of the jumper. Initial impact most likely caused the loop to part and the PC went up. The rebound energy drove the bag forward allowing the PC and bridle to end up below bag and into the lines. From the photo evidence available I feel this is the most likely scenario. Given the opportunity to be on scene and see the situation in its entirety I may have come to a different conclusion but I am going on what is at hand. Robin, A good post and you made some very good points. My question is what do we do now? It will take sometime for the training methods to spool up and make a difference. In the mean time people are dying. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

You seem to only here or see what you want to. In Australia they collided at a reported 30 m or around 300 ft. And the jumper that died was doing a speed inducing turn when they hit. How do you know what style of turn they were using unless you were there? They had a lot more time and experience than you do, maybe they had learned some of the same things you are so proud of knowing. This is such a self serving statement that it is almost sounds like a joke. Your arguments are really starting to get old and your refusal to admit when you are wrong says a lot about what kind of person you are. You could be the poster boy for the “entitlement generation”. If it was locked closed by the bridle the fabric would not be exposed now, would it. There is no way the bridle can dance around the lines and end up like that due to a broken loop on impact... Truth is neither of us know for sure, you tend to beleive one thing and I tend to beleive another. Every rigger I have talked to has come to the same conclusion. You statements don’t hold up the photo evidence and it is clear your knowledge of rigging principles is lacking when you insist your view is the only possible way it could have happened. The truth is nothing is for sure except that I have to pay taxes and the sun will come up in the morning. And I am not willing to bet on the sun. You are entitled to believe what you want and you are entitled to be wrong. You get one rigger or someone with experience in scene investigation to agree with your theory and I will listen to what they have to say. Until then you are just being hard headed. Are you trying to say that the majority of jumpers are not landing their canopies safely? If so you are really out in left field. The majority are not dead or injured so they must be landing safely. Think before you post. And again you would be wrong. You are betting on something you know nothing about. You keep running on about we need more data and you make a statement with absolutely no data to back it up. And you know this how? From the same data that you used to make your last wild ass guess in the dark statement? Yes jumpers used to jump drunk and high and I hate to break you bubble but guess what, they still do. Some of them even fly small canopies and swoop. 12/31/2003 - LOWT,EXC - Toxicology reports indicated he was drunk and under the influence of cocaine. You are right it is not new. But lately it has been getting worse and killing people. What are your suggestions to put a stop to it now. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Some analysis on fatalities data
mjosparky replied to Muffie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It is evident that you put a great deal of work into this. The one change I would like to see is Canopy Collisions on landing as a separate category. It is such a hot topic at the moment that I would like to see its stand alone numbers. Also you mentioned 2 fatalities where the AAD’s were on but failed to fire. Do you have a link to these reports? You also one failed to cut away due to a custom rig. If I could get a link to that please. Good job, Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
As a rigger who do you work for, the owner or the last rigger that packed. I won't withhold any information from the owner. He has a right to know about his gear. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Better equipped for what? All the understanding and skill is moot if it is used in a reckless and dangerous manner. And that is true for almost all things………………. People were safely landing canopies long before there was a PD Factory Team and the majority continues to do so. But there is a fringe element who think they know parachute flight that are causing havoc and need to be reined in. There is no analogy there just a statement of fact. That is not “pure assumption” on Eric’s part but it is assumption on your part. Having been involved in more fatality investigations then I care to think about I assure you that what you see in the pictures not unusual. The forces generated when a 200+ lb body hits the ground at around 120 mph is somewhere around 49 tons. Since 60% of the human body is water the rebound energy is more than enough to break the loop and pitch the bag from the container. You have no idea how this rig was packed. From your response I would say your knowledge of proper rigging is limited. You need to quit looking for something that is not there. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

And what I see is paranoia. If you are not part of the problem you have nothing to fear. Sparky Now you sound like Homeland Security when they trample peoples rights... You poor picked on child. If the FAA comes down on skydiving you will think “Homeland Security” is a Boy Scout Meeting. They are all powerful and there is no recourse to what they decide.
