Have never seen one. Can't see the point. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
USPA. What's your source? My source is I was there young lady. And I call you on 25 "no-pull fatalities" in 1989. Show me the proof. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I see this sort of statement a lot, and every time I see it all I can think is... Are there really that many people out there with no common sense??? (And if there are, it seems like they shouldn't be jumping out of an airplane in the first place!) Ah, but see that's the problem. The lack of common sense creates a situation where they don't know they shouldn’t be doing something. And quite often it is just an arrogant, "I know it all" attitude and they really believe they have it handled. I have watched it happen over and over in the last 25+ years. But as equipment got better and freefall and landing speeds got faster the price paid for a small mistake kept going up. When I went through that phase, "I've got this handled", I was very seldom in the air with more then 3 or 4 other people and landing a C-9 with a 7TU mod. I was able to survive the "head up my ass" period because the price for a fuck up was not to high. I broke both ankles, at the same time, and that acted as my wake up call. Unfortunately, some of the new generation of "arrogant young punks" will not survive their wake up call. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Cypres batteries are about the size of a "C" cell and a Maglite uses a "D" cell. How did you get them to fit. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
If I remember right, DZ's also had to have a permit of some type from the state. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Frank, Here are the ones I can remember: Kneeling from the left, Jimmy Tyler, died jumping Half Dome, next Bill Parsons, Dick Pedley, died on a base jump in L.A., Me, Richard Brooks. Standing, tall guy in the center, Chuck Dodson, on his left, John Miller. The guy kneeling on the far right, don't remember his name, drown in the canal under at Taft under a reserve. This Accuracy Trick ? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Answer shopping certainly does happen, but not too rarely an answer does not feel right (or perhaps just not complete), and the only explanation given is that the answerer is too experienced to be bothered to explain it. (but not too busy to spend a lot of time mocking you for asking). Given the number of high timers who continue to give me the 45 degree answer when I ask for suggested separations with a new exit sequence scenario, this can be very frustrating. I agree with you that time in sport and jump numbers do not automatically mean knowledge. You could have 20 years and 5,000 jumps or 1 year repeated 20 times and 100 jumps repeated 50 times. But for the most part, the more "experienced" jumper will have more knowledge. You must remember that this is the internet and remember that when taking advise posted here. About getting and answer that is incomplete or doesn't feel right. I have never seen a post that referred to someone being to "experienced to be bothered". Quite the opposite, I have seen some very experienced and knowledgeable jumpers take a great deal of time explaining something to a newer jumper. You might just have real thin skin. Judging from what I can see in the photos, it would be much better to have hands on, I would say the owner is about to learn a very expensive lesson about do it yourself rigging. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

No, you are throwing rocks at any perspective that does not perceive what your perspective does. No, the FAA did not take any formal action. But as many who post here remember, the Feds were looking a lot harder at the sport because of the type of fatalities during that period. It is my feeling that if the trend had continued they would have stepped in with some form of regulation. Where did you get your numbers, "dozens of no-pull fatalities"? Is that the type of hard data you said was needed to defend a W/L BSR? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

In this sport if you don't get old, you get buried. Twardo, I'll have you know that is the genuine article. It was the original "Pro Rating". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

You have not been around long enough to remember, but the state of California was in the business of regulating some aspects of jumping at that time. By reducing the number of glaring fatalities from low pulls or no pulls we were able to get that changed. If we continue to have people die under good canopies, without making an effort as a group to control it, some mid level bureaucrat will see a way that he can make his bones by "putting a stop to this silliness". You just keep your head in the sand pretending there is not a problem and you won't even see it coming. Do you really feel there is not a problem? Do you feel 10 to 15 deaths a year under good canopies is an acceptable lose? Do you feel changing this does not rate an effort? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, I feel sorry for you. I'll bite. I'm new. What does the "Z" stand for? Z is the letter you put in your logbook when you were out of control. Back in the day of little blue logbooks with 10 jumps per page, you just wrote down a series of letters and symbols to show what you did. For example, stylies would often have "RT, LT, BL, LT, RT, BL" and a 45 second delay student might have "RT, LT, BL, FL, and a little triangle "delta" symbol" If you got out of control at any point of your skydive you would insert a "Z" where it occured. Chuck What do you mean, back in the days of the little blue logbooks? I still use them. They have change a little, remember when the pages were yellow paper, and you can get them through Para-Gear. Remember when you had to do a complete series in less then 15 seconds to get you "D" lic. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I think that is a common fallacy. Check out this page from NASA for example, which says "At NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (now renamed Johnson Space Center) we had a test subject accidentally exposed to a near vacuum (less than 1 psi) in an incident involving a leaking space suit in a vacuum chamber back in '65. He remained conscious for about 14 seconds, which is about the time it takes for O2 deprived blood to go from the lungs to the brain. The suit probably did not reach a hard vacuum, and we began repressurizing the chamber within 15 seconds. The subject regained consciousness at around 15,000 feet equivalent altitude. The subject later reported that he could feel and hear the air leaking out, and his last conscious memory was of the water on his tongue beginning to boil" I was thinking more of an explosive or rapid lose of pressure. Similar to what they put you through in the chamber, but they do that a 25,000 and you are only dealing with lack of O2. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I think you are entirely right that "newbies" have something to contribute. All of us can learn for each other. There are 2 areas where I think things get a little testy. 1. Newbies that parrot something they have heard and try to pass as knowledge on the subject. There is a difference between being able to repeat some bit of information and understanding what it means. 2. Newbies that will ask a question and then argue with the answer they get. They will continue to ask the same question until they get the answer they want. This happens both on line and at the DZ. But it is a very small number and we (me) should not paint all newbies with the same brush. Thanks for the contribution you have just made. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

CYPRES 1 Batteries (Was: cypres 2 maintainence price announced at PIA)
mjosparky replied to tdog's topic in Gear and Rigging
They look like 2 conventional C cells, but it has some electronic components wired into the overall circuit, externally mounted, so there is also some extra parts and manual labor involved, probably along with some unique testing. It is still a bit excessive, I think, but that should help you to understand. C cell is a size, did you check and see what to voltage is? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
