Dear Mjosparky, Didn’t you stop jumping a while ago? If that is the case, why continue to complain about the current state of the sport? You come from the most spoiled generation in American history, the baby-boomer generation. Yuppies that got everything handed to them on a silver platter. If you wanted a job, you joined a union and got overtime, benefits and paid vacation. If you wanted a family, you could afford to do it on a single head of household income. Because of your generation’s greed, my generation “X” will be left with no social security, no health care and no stock portfolio. Why? because you kept all the wealth for yourselves. You see, that type of greed has a trickledown effect. The few things that our “entitlement generation” can afford are now in fact 3 times as expensive. Gas, jumptickets, skydiving gear. You name it, it all costs more because someone on the other end wants to get rich. Yes you are. Were you one of them or is this something you have just heard about? I fought in an unpopular war in 1967/68, lost friends and when we came home we were spit on. I also spent 30 years of my life as a Firefighter. But none of that can justify rude and belligerent behavior. Read this very slowly so there is no misunderstanding, the young men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are not the ones that fall into the group I am referring to. Recently there has been a lot of discussion about the continued decline in the numbers of active skydivers by both USPA and DZO’s. How do we stop the experienced jumpers for leaving what can be done to bring new people into the sport? The answer to these questions can be found by looking at skydivers themselves. For the past 12 to 15 years there has been an increase in an attitude I call the “entitlement generation”. Every DZ has their share of them and we all know who they are. They are for the most part loud, obnoxious and confrontational. They are big on “their rights” and have complete disregard for others. They seem to take great pride in sounding like an illiterate street thug. Picture a grade school bully in a grown up body. While small in numbers their impact on the sport of skydiving is and will continue to be huge. I can’t think of any other recreational activity that tolerates this type of behavior. Well maybe “mixed martial arts” but they keep those clowns in a cage. With the cost of jumping always on the rise more and more jumpers are looking elsewhere to spend their money and few first time jumpers are going to invest the money to learn a sport that seems unable or unwilling to control this fringe element. Finding an activity that offers the thrill without the crap is far too easy. If the trend continues, and members of the “entitlement generation” are allowed to behave like spoiled children at DZ’s, in 10 to 12 years skydiving will be just a memory.
