It was at the world meet sometime during the 80’s. The Chinese showed up with an 8 way team wearing a copy of the Wonder Hog/Vector packed with a copy of the StratoCloud. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And you should be proud of that record. But cutting corners on safety issues is a good way to bring it to an end. Therein lays the problem. You have stated several different ways that you do things and none of them appear to be right. With a tandem passenger you don’t have the luxury of doing it your way, only the right way. I always have a “bee in my bonnet” over safety issues. Anytime you think your home grown methods trump those of the manufacture you are setting yourself up to be roasted. You seem to be leaning heavily on “honesty”. Your profile states: Lap: Senior Rigger They have not made lap type systems since the 1930's and the last ticket issued for one was before you were born. Have you even seen a picture of one? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

My home DZ was Perris/Elsinore. No I am not a TI and I haven't jumped I almost 5 years. But I am a rigger, a pilot and was an S&TA at Perris for a few years and I can read. You sound like a 6 year old telling his mommy that little Jimmy does it so it can be wrong. Do the job right or quit. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

You’re breaking my heart. People liking me or not is not something I lose sleep over. I have spent my whole adult life watching people die unnecessarily and that upsets me. There are a lot of things in this world that shouldn’t be done in a haphazard way and making up your own rules. Skydiving Instructor is one of them. With your cavalier attitude toward safety you might want to make a career change. Something that will not put other people’s lives at risk by what you choose to do or not do. Just as long as you are happy....screw the passangers they don't know any better. No, I think some people are just trying to it right. And what percentage of your customers have any clue as to what is safe or unsafe on a tandem jump? Tandem mills are a little like herding sheep with credit cards. Not if you are chargeing NZ$165 extra for carrring a GO PRO. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

This is how UPT defines it. SIGMA TANDEM SYSTEM OWNER’S MANUAL SIGMA TANDEM “PIN CHECK” Back of Rig - Top Down 1. Look through window in the yoke and check the Cypres. 2. Open reserve pin cover, check that the yellow breakaway cable is threaded through the Collin’s Lanyard loop inside the yoke. 3. Check the reserve pin seating, RSL connection, and loop condition. Close pin cover. 4. Open the main cover flap and check the: A. Routing of the closing loop, B. Routing of the drogue bridle out of the top of the disk, C. Colored kill line in the drogue bridle set window, D. Locking pin and safety pin seating, and E. Spectra Ripcord routing toward the housings. No twists. 5. Check the drogue bridle routing to the pouch. 6. Check that the drogue is well placed in the pouch. 7. Check that both drogue release handles are in place. 8. Military pre-jump checks are fairly lengthy and complicated compared to sports jumper. The JM has a set order that must be followed when pre-flighting a jumper. (someone correct me if needed) He is required to look at and touch the first item, leave his hand on that item while looks at and touches the second item with his other hand. He keep his hand on the second item while he looks at and touches the third item with the other hand ect………….Anytime you short cut safety for any reason you are wrong. To do it in the name of added revenue is criminal. Each tandem manufacture has established procedures for TI’s to follow before and during a jump. I am sure if you call them they will be able to give reasons for these procedures. This is just my opinion but I think a TI should handle the jump and let someone else catch the shot. Sparky Are you saying is that your procedures are better than the manufacture of the equipment and people who developed tandem? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

You can order anything you what on any rig if you throw enought money at them. B-12's abd Quick-ejects were standard up until sometime in the early 90's. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Agreed. Hence the two out at 2500'. I don't care what manufacturer makes the gear, just hate the bashing issued when it ends up being operator error. Just about all made today is pretty well designed and functions well if used even close to instructions. Most people who complain the loudest pay a packer and can’t explain how their own system works. Container systems are pretty much all the same except for cosmetics. If someone tells you that rig XXgofast is the best but not explain why, he is either repeating what was said by someone else without a clue or he is sponsored. Tim, Did not intend to say you started any “urban legends”. What I had in mind was that so many times there would be an issue with some brand or a component and depending on the geographic location and popularity of the manufacture/designer it fades from the market or continue to be used with just minor alterations. Over the years the issues would be brought up over and over. With each retelling more and more of the facts disappeared the story teller swore he was on site and saw it with his own eyes. On toggles, I believe but have no data to back it up that most brake releases during deployment are caused by the jumper reaching for rear risers and dislodging the toggle with his hand. Before the advent of “Velcro-less” premature brake release was almost unheard of. Anytime you take a system and change one component there with be an affect somewhere else on the system that must be addressed. The transition to “Spectra” lines lead to tuck tabs and the tuck toggle. I am sure at one time someone saw a reason for it but I’ll be damned if I understand it. One more layer of complexity. This has always been a pet peeve with me. You can’t throw a few oz. of nylon into a 120 mph wind. Where the PC is when you release it is as far as it going. Both systems are hand deployed PC’s that the jumper pulls out and releases. The difference is how and when the pin is extracted. I have jumped both and feel comfortable with both. To me the limiting factor is the “pull out” has a limited market share making for fewer jumpers understanding how they work. That leads to more jumper explaining something he knows little if anything about. Coming full circle we are now back to “And from there we get urban legends that people take as fact.” Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

There a lot of things you don’t know but that has never slowed you down before. What pchapman did was offer knowledgeable advice about what could be found on the site. Don’t present such a large target to the “know-it-alls”. If you manage to stay around long enough you will learn there are no “know-it-alls” in this sport, all the “experts” are dead. Maybe if you loose the attitude on the ground you can get a chance to show your “madd skillz” in the air. If this happens to you once shame on them, if it happens 2 or 3 times you might what to look some where else for the reason. Just an "old tooter" with a shot across your bow. Yep. I specifically worded my post that way and I'm glad you picked up on it. My mods are simple yet it makes my rig extremely easy and dependable to work with. Certain skydiving equipment components could have been easily designed better but minor imperfections resulted in consequences 20 years ago and some still occur now. Thanks for the reply dave. And from there we get urban legends that people take as fact. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I'm callin' total bullshit on this one! A pull out will minimize your chance of a horseshoe because you can place the pilot chute where you want it. The only way to have a pilot chute in tow is to not turn loose of the pilot chute. It's been a long time since I've read Bill's essay on why the throw out is better than the pull out, I didn't agree with it then and I doubt I'll agree with it now. Bull shit.
