Thanks for pointing that out! I read all the replies when this thread first started and kept thinking to myself "Congrats, you just killed your camera man." It's surprising to me how many of the initial responses didn't seem to take into account the fact that there was another body in the same airspace as the deploying parachute. I've given some thought to what I might do in this situation. I'd like to think that I would attempt to dock AFF style on the jumper and push him out of the way. On the other hand maybe it's just best to wave off and hope to hell that the camera man accepts the signal. I wonder, what is the best answer? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Jump number requirements for swooping?
Jimbo replied to listo's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
This is an illogical conclusion. Almost anyone can learn to swoop at a basic level and not get hurt, it's just not that difficult. It's experience however that will keep you alive during a swoop gone wrong. That experience doesn't necessarily need to come from swooping, it comes from time under canopy and the only way I know to get that is to increase your jump numbers. I'm not advocating a swooping license or additional regulation in our sport, but please do realize that coaching is not a substitute for experience. They're both important parts of the puzzle and you just can't survive without both. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -

Stacy Weeks is the best damn skydiver I've ever met, probably the best in the world. She can funnel the Golden Knights, land without flaring, and swoop into cows. I think she deserves an award. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Someone had fried twinkies at an office party not too long ago, I was afraid to try them. I couldn't get past the idea of the impending heart attack. On the other hand, those who did have them said that they were delicious. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Congrats on your success in the election. See the museum thread in this same forum. Let the USPA manage skydiving in the US, find someone else to get skydiving into the museum business. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Unfortunately in the case of skydiving and canopy flight drama usually translates directly into trauma. Be careful. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

The more I think about this the more I'm against it, even if there is a positive financial outcome. Let's keep the USPA doing what they were founded to do and that's keep skydivers skydiving. If we are to have a museum then let it be founded and operated by a separate group, either a spin off of the USPA, PIA, anyone but the USPA. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. By definition it is. The problem is that most of the public don't know that skydiving exists outside of extreme movie stunts. The USPA museum, while nice in the sense that it preserves our history just won't draw enough people to be self supporting. Again I'll ask, who's gonig to pay the bills? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

That's a shame too, because some of those posts were quite entertaining. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Wuss. Anyhow, my favorite DZ? Any DZ with good people and fast planes will do just fine. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Unless you're lucky enough to have a spring on your property then yes, I think you should pay for water. If youi're buying bottled water than realize that someone is paying to have the water purified, realize that those plastic bottles aren't free, realize that delivery to your local grocery store isn't free. Exactly why is it that you think it should be free? If you're drinking tap water then again realize that someone is paying money to purify and deliver the water to your house. I suppose if it makes you feel better you can think of water as free and purification, delivery, and/or packaging as a premium service that you must pay for. What? Again you think it's free to operate a land fill? That charge also helps to deter people from just throwing anything away when it may be able to be recycled or reused. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Where's the funniest place that you "got caught"?
Jimbo replied to FreeFlyHol's topic in The Bonfire
College. The back seat of a friends car while he was being issued a speeding ticket. We threw a jacket over her head and the cop asked "what's the matter with her?", "nothing officer, she's just had a bit too much to drink and needs to lay down". Those were the days. -
Quite true. Unfortunately I don't see that changing until we have structured and responsible canopy training and education at more than 2 or 3 DZs. Education and training will save lives. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

What are the Dangers of underloading a HP Canopy?
Jimbo replied to Viking's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I think that depends on the canopy and the pilot. Did you have a specific canopy in mind? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
It's not just you, the incident reports are only published every 3 or 4 months. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I'm going to guess that Parachutist isn't much better. Check out Skydiving, much better IMO. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

And I heard rumors of.... Vaporware. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

And that is exactly the problem. You're a skydiver and you're not planning on driving or flying across the country to see it, what makes them think that a non-skydiver would have ANY interest at all in this silly little project? A while back someone suggested the idea of a museum on wheels. If there's going to be a museum I'd rather see it done this way. It could travel to major boogies, state fairs, etc... If you want people to visit you're going to bring the museum to them, you can't expect them to go to the museum. My opinion? It's an irresponsible use of our dues, it won't generate enough money to be self sufficient, and finally we'll end up paying for it. Fuck it, sell the land to McDonald's and call it done. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I'll do you one better and suggest that MOST of the beers brewed here in America are of substantial quality. When I walk into my local beer store I see at least a dozen coolers stocked with more microbrews than I can remember and only a few coolers stocked with American mega-swill. Of those few coolers stocked with the American mega-swill it seems that they'll all Bud/Miller/Coors. It's true that the Bud/Miller/Coors market is larger, but of the number of beers being brewed today I think that most of them are what we would call good. Pun intended? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Is it commercial beers, mega-brew beers, or American beers that you take issue with? Personally I think that this fine country brews some of the best damn beer on the planet. Micro-breweries are at an all time high, many sell (commercial) on a national or at least regional level (though many don't,) and the big boys are starting to take notice. AB recently announced plans to market a premium stout and while I don't have high hopes for this drink I think it does signify the rebirth of 'good' beer in America. So, I'll ask again, what exactly is it about American beer that you don't like? What's your drink of choice? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I think Kevin is right on about the traffic and the type of dz you're used to. I also jump CK which is a very busy skydiving operation as well as a moderatly busy airport. I think that helped a lot. Had I come from a single cessna DZ I think I would have become overwhelmed at the traffic. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
