  1. That depends on what canopy and even more importanty if you are up wind or down wind. From PD: What good is not loosing altitude if you are not going forward? If you are upwind brakes can work since while you do arrest your decent rate you spend more time aloft and the wind at your back can push you longer. But into the wind half brakes will kill your forward speed...And that does no good if you are long. 2. I have flown several hundred accuracy approaches with the starting point as half brakes. It works great. You do not get that surge if you let the toggles up slowly. That totally depends on the specific canopy design.....Most at half brakes into the wind will slow your forward speed and allow you to cover less ground. 3. I agree...I went with the technique angle since he said that a rigger has looked at it. I agree 100% with you that a worn out f111, or any canopy really, is not worth much more than a car cover. Or a ceiling cover...they look cool up there. I just see so many people say that downsizing is the key to a good landing....I don't know why this bad advice stays alive. 4. OK but then if they made a mistake....and it seems they did....Then why was this thread about how "big bad America" made them recant it? Seems to me that they made a mistake....And admitted it when called on it...I don't see how that says anything about American press being bullied by the government....Maybe I am just stupid and can't see it? Hey Bill...I'm not the media. I didn't "report" anything. I just expressed an opinion, I dd not claim it as fact. They did. Sure, I have said time after time that if you can PROVE to me he was lying I would want to see him punished....So far you have provided nothing. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  5. Possible yes, but they should not have reported that as fact till they had the proof. If in fact it did happen, I want the responsible parties to be punished. But I don't want the media to report things that *could* have happend....Especially when it starts riots that kill 16 people and wound 100, and re-energizes the enemy. 6. See hear is the thing...you have no PROOF that it has happened. The news outlet also had no PROOF. Do you want the media to report things thay think might have happend? Is that responsible journalism? Add in that the report, that they now say was incorrect, has led to death and injury...Do you still think that without PROOF they should have reported it? Also a bunch of the "other shit" was from one location that incase you didn't know, some of those people have been put in jail for it. They made up a plausible story and then recanted it. The story caused riots and killed people. Then they admitted they didn't have the proof. Bad reporting IMO to report "facts" that you can't prove. 7. Maybe, but the majority do not. They have all kinds of info...they don't listen. Joey Jones is a great canopy pilot....He had 800 jumps on a 175 before he down sized. Rickster is possibly one of the best in the world and he jumped a progressive profile for thousands of jumps. Now you have guys with 300 jumps at 1.6....It took Jones, Powell ect thousands of jumps before they had that wingload. They are the best, what makes these new kids think they can progress faster? 8. Maybe, but making choices think you know something about a sport you know nothing about is stupid. A whuffo who does not know of the saftey equipment or training is NOT qualified to make an informed choice. A swooper who does swoop is nothing like a whuffo. 9. I like Slinks... Well, I like soft links. Made or bought. I have seen way to many Rapid links open after landing....Now to be honest I can't think of ONE fatality die to that, but still the thought of a rapid link opening up on me is just creepy. I like the thought that is a soft link blows...I'll know it. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  10. The best advice you are gonna get *ever* on this forum is this bit from me right now: Don't get advice here...Ask your instructor. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  11. If your Instructors don't teach you how to PLF...Find better instructors. I mean using that logic why bother teaching malfunction training? I mean I have had maybe one FJS have a mal in 12 years. I could always wait till later to teach them how to cutaway A PLF will save your ass. If your DZ does not teach them....Find a new DZ. 12. I know about hook turns and canopy control....So I am not a whuffo to canopy flight. A whuffo has no idea about skydiving. Big difference. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  13. You are missing this point. If you think the answer to better landings is a smaller canopy you are wrong. If you can't land the bigger canopy you should learn how to land it, before you try to go smaller. A Stiletto at 2.0 was very easy to flare...Much easier than my Stiletto at 1.7. Then the answer is learning to flair correctly, not going to a smaller canopy. I don't know why people continue to believe in this fallicy. I think its just cause they want to be cool and jump smaller gear. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  14. Oh, I see. They print something false, and when called on it, and they admit they had it wrong, you just assume that they were pressured.... "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  15. What the hell is wrong with it? I hate it when people bitch about sexist situations and people, and all the time they are being sexist. If there are programs for females...Why not males? Males not deserving enough IN YOUR EYES? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  16. Damn, don't make it sound painful "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  17. Read the post above yours: .77 WL and he does fine. I have jumped .75 without a problem. Vector has people do solos under tandem rigs. You don't need a small canopy to get a good flair. It is one of the most common misconceptions in skydiving. A smaller canopy has less toggle pressure....That makes people think they are easier to land....No, they are easier to FLAIR. But the require much better timing and technique than a bigger canopy. A Stiletto 97 is very easy to flair, but would make a really crappy student canopy since it requires so much more skill to land. From PD's website "Choosing the Right Canopy" From PD and "wing Load and its Effects": These two articals and more great reading Here "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  18. One is a minor inconvience once in a while...I have never been stopped, but they do them here. The other is a several times a day procedure that can be fooled pretty easily for no reason what so ever. Unlike you, I see the need for a police force that has some power to do the job we ask of them. No, one is looking for guilty people, the other assumes everyone is guilty. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  19. The key is "wore out" vs "isn't wore" out. And the "slightly smaller". In that case the new *slightly smaller* canopy is the safer one. If I had a kid and I could put them out under a worn out F111 220sqft, or a Sabre 150....I'd put them on the larger canopy. Now if the choice was the same wore out 220, or a new Navigator 200. They would get the 200. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  20. You seem to miss the #1 thing that makes a "100 jump wonder"...They don't think the rules apply to them, they are better than the "others" at 100 jumps. No one that bounced or hooked in thought they were gonna. No one does. There are. If you want to fly a "complex" aircraft (Retracts, constant speed prop, flaps) you need a check out with a CFI. If you want to fly a tailwheel (Once the norm, but led to many accidents later) you need a checkout. If you want to fly "High Performance" (over 200 HP) you need a checkout. Also, insurance regulations prevent people from getting in over their heads. As for part two...Why can't we? Well we could. However, we have people who don't see a problem, others don't care, and some do not think anyone has any business telling them what they can or cannot do. Yep on both counts. The bold is the key....Why did you do it? Would you have listend before? I talk to a bunch of folks that hammer....Some still refuse to admit that they were over their heads. Some blame traffic, turbulence...ect. The ones that do admit it, I ask them "What could I or anyone have told you before that would have made you listen?" The number one answer is "Nothing, I would not have listened." So, how can you make them listen...sometimes it is only by them surviving such ordeal that makes them believe. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  21. This is more a part of the fabric, not size. If someone tells you you need to down size to get a better landing they are simply not correct. I have jumped as small as 69sqft to almost 300....I stood up both. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  22. I have seen them in the US and have no problem with them. The problem is you will never be able to prove that you are not discriminating...And the minority will claim you are anyway. Which is why I like the road block idea. Of course some will claim that you set it up so that only a certain part of town and target group was hit. I don't like the Ignition Interlock since it assumes everyone drives drunk. It is stepping on personal liberty. I have no problem catching people who are breaking the law, but to assume anyone that drives is breaking the law is wrong. 23. Quincy years ago used to have blots. SDC has the ability to do anything...The missing ingrediant is organizers. SDC needs to *want* a blot, and it could have one. If you get a good organizer that wants to do it people will travel to it. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  24. First I have to say....this shit was FUNNY I think the market should decide for products. If you piss off people, people are not going to buy your product. As for sports teams.....Good grief. People should lighten up. "Seminoles" were well respected, strong and fierce in battle...I can think of very few better mascots. But if you are going to do that, what about the "Fighting Irish", "Patriots", "Cowboys".....ect. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  25. Would you be OK if the police could just walk into your home to look around? The only people that should mind are the ones that are hidding something. Not saying it would be a big deal. Just said it was an invasion of privacy. Why make people have a drivers license? Why make people register to vote?
