Another attempt by the media to over-dramatize skydiving
Superfletch replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm not sure if it's online or not but I have seen the video on some of the "video" shows. I believe the Queen even knighted the man or at least gave him some sort of award for his heroic actions. It's really quite amazing video... The tandem pair is laying on it's side and spinning due to the drogue being wrapped around the TM's neck and the video guy flies in, docks and pulls the reserve. He most definately saved their lives. The video is old enough it could have even predated mandatory AAD's on tandems. As a camera guy I have told all my TM's that if for some reason I land off to always take the passanger home. I would hate to think that something bad would happen to a passanger or one of my brothers trying to get a landing shot. If I end up missing it, I just interview them when I get home. It's as simple as that. Besides... :) It's a lot easier to find a ride home for one person. ;) Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer

Most container manufacturer's suggest that you can go one size up or down in the container. It's been my experience you can go down a couple of sizes in some cases and still be pretty safe. I would talk to a local rigger or knowledgeable person in your area for specific suggestions pertaining to specific container/canopy sizes. Not all containers are created equal. Anyhow, I suggest to all "first time" buyers to go used at first. Like I said, downsizing is an issue as well as... you don't always land on your feet in the beginning... wouldn't you hate mudding up and grass staining your brand new container all to hell. Time and time again I have watched students order all brand new gear that matched and then one year later all their stuff is mismatched from downsizing or replacement from ruined equipment. Do yourself a favor and pick up a $2000 rig now and then drop for the $5000 rig in a couple of years. Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer

I like to wear a child's sized knit glove stretched over my hand under a pair of slightly oversized batting gloves to accomodate the added thickness of the knit gloves. The knit gloves keep your hands warm and the leather batting gloves break the wind so that the heat doesn't escape. It's the best combination I've found so far. I would buy a used rig that fits in your budget and put a 150-200 jumps on it. Then I would special order a rig after that. You'll probably downsize a few times before you reach 500 jumps and you'll want your canopies to still fit in your container. Just a thought. However, i can also see your dilemma. I myself jump a MICRON. I think it's the best, most bulletproof rig on the market and I also have a skyhook to. It all comes down to personal preference. Good luck. Well... I used to have a PC9 until it got stolen. The PC101 is essentially the same camera and the PC105 is real close too. All use the same M series batteries and are roughly the same size. I use a couple of 105's at the moment and they work fine. Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer

That's how I started out... but the helmet was big and bulky and had a chip in the lens on the camera that came out on video so I bought my own gear and the rest is history... we don't have that old "mailbox" helmet and camera set up anymore. Now there are anywhere between 5-9 of us all sporting Sony's and Rebel XT's. Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer

It's summer, but remember to tuck in your shirts
Superfletch replied to dbattman's topic in Safety and Training
Your best bet is to just tuck in your shirt into your pants before you put on your rig. It's as simple as that. Doesn't require a lot of thought, just a little. Play it safe. If you forget to tuck in your shirt, take off your rig and do it. Even if you pull the shirt down around and under your leg straps the wind can catch it and pull it out. If by chance you do grag a handful of shirt at deployment time... remember, once for you, once for me... Go SILVER! Don't let a T-Shirt kill you. That was some leftover chocolate cake from a birthday party the night before. Right after the picture was taken they promptly hit me with an ice chest full of water from the beer from the night before. Sons of bitches. Oh, they tried to play it off as a shower to help rinse off, but I know it was just another thing they could throw at me. hahahahahah Man was that water cold... and the chunks of ice kind of hurt too. :P Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer

Sort of... it's complicated... it was a simple 4-way. It was just with whom I jumped that made it so special. Check Industrial Haze for more details. Gary "Superfletch" Fletcher D-26145; USPA Coach, IAD/I, AFF/I Videographer/Photographer
