questions regarding RDS experience
Spizzzarko replied to MrBrant's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I think there is a lot of confusion here about RDS's. The RDS should not be used as a replacement for your collapsable slider or kill line pilot chute. If you are not into competitive swooping pulling the bag and pilot chute off is pointless. Even the crew guys find that the RDS is to time consuming. By the time that I can get mine off and stowed most crew people can get a 4 stack together, and I'm pretty damn fast at realing my shit in and stowing it. If you are pulling low like you say you are then an RDS is really complicating matters for you, as the time that you have to deal with the higher malfunction rate of an RDS is greatly deminished. There is no need to be in freefall below 3000'. If that is your bag of tricks then go and hang out with the nearly deads in the base forum. With the setup you have I bet you are getting some squirrely openings. Just ditch the RDS idea, so you get better openings so you can pack faster, and so you will not have to deal with the added posibility of malfunctions. Most of us who jump RDS are riggers, have over 1000 jumps, and are hard core swooping. I wouldn't use my full setup on aff jumps or rw jumps. Some people do, but I don't like the traffic hassels involved. Good luck dude. -
The head forward position you are in usually ads about 1 to 2 inches to your swoop, but at least you look cool doing it.........

questions regarding RDS experience
Spizzzarko replied to MrBrant's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
That's why you kick them in the balls when you get down hahahaa. I'm glad that JVX is working out for you. -
Look at the names you dropped... Those are ultra current dudes who know their shit when it comes to canopies and wing suits. The average jumper probably is not as current, not loading as much, and not as experienced in wing suits. I think what the discussion was getting around to was that you should choose the gear that fits your mission. You are not going to go into urban combat with a life preserver on now are you (Some Navy dudes may feel more comfortable with one on, but you know what they say about men on boats for long periods of time...)? Those dudes you mentioned probably don't wear or use a cypres 1 or 2 if they are busting out large turns to final as the cypres 2 speed is probably the better choice.

questions regarding RDS experience
Spizzzarko replied to MrBrant's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I like to build a little speed before deploying with the full RDS. I'm not saying that I deploy in a head down like the dude in the cobalt comercial, but I don't throw the pilot chute back into the door of the aircraft as I leave either. An RDS can be a cool thing, but make sure you are using it for the right reasons. If you decide that it is good for you then I suggest Joe Bennets or Mels from Skyworks rigging. They have really good customer service, and are nice guys too. -
Wing suits have different flight characteristics than sandom people falling from the sky for which modern gear was designed for. Those who jump the wing suits should take those characteristics into account when they choose the gear that they are jumping. If some one wants to jump a velocity 90 with a wing suit and a speed cypres that is up to them. Is it the wisest choice? Not really, but people do stupid things. Maybe a stilleto was not the wisest choice in the case you cited. Personally If I were jumping wing suits and felt the need for a cypres then I would not use a speed cypres nor my 96 velocity loaded at 2.3. Could I jump the 96 with a wing suit? Sure, but is it the best choice? No. I choose to jump my 96 for the swooping aspect of the sport. I personally feel the added insurance of a cypres is a good purchase because I do AFF here and there. Whith the turn I perform I have moved into a realm where the cypres or cypres 2 can possibly fire. Therefore I feel that I should taylor my gear choices accordingly. With this choice of gear there are limitations involved so I will taylor my activities to accomodate my gear also. No wing suit jumps for me with my 96 and a speed cypres. Personally I think a bigger canopy wouldn't hurt in a lot of situations.
-
I'm sure most of you guys with the wing suits are not jumping canopies loaded around 2.3. The fact of the matter is if you are loading above 2.0 on a CB canopy, and with enough turn you can approach firing speeds on a regular cypres. A lot of us do not use them for what ever reason, but now Airtec is offering a device that will posibly save you if you are knocked out, or lose altitude awareness if you are jumping a smaller canopy with a bigger turn. Most people now are throwing down bigger turns to final to get more speed. Distance of a swoop is derived from speed on final approach, and many people are finding that the 270 is really not developing enough speed for them to be competitive with people doing 450's or 630's or what ever. If you want the added peace of mind for a cypres and you are doing a larger turn then the speed cypres may be for you. My decision has been made. You should taylor your gear needs to what you are doing.

The regular cypres is fairly intuitive, but I'm sure it can be tricked into firing. If you are loading highly and doing a sizable turn to final then it might be better for you. Think about it as a cypres is supposed to save you when you lose alti awaenes or get knocked out. The 94mph firing speed of the speed cypres is still acceptable for freefall jumps. I highly doubt that someone knocked out would be falling slower than 94mph, and the regular belly speed is near 110mph so it should fire when you need it to.

Call Brady Cane at Mile Hi skydiving center in Longmont, Co. He may be able to accomodate you on that issue. Insider tip for you.

PD Reserve wingloading 2:1 and higher
Spizzzarko replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Maybe eventually, but that day is further away right now. 90 MPH is pretty damn fast, but Jay Moledski did 90+ through the gates up here in Colorado last year to set his distance record. He was really weighted up though. With the weight restrictions in place now I really don't see that as being an issue as much any more. Although if you are really hauling ass and doing more than a 270 turn it may behove you to call SSK and chat with them about the speed cypres. I'm not trying to sell it, but the choice is up to you. The cypress is pretty intuitive though and there is logic programmed into it that tells it if you have a good canopy over your head. Eric at SSK can tell you more. The record of the cypres's that have fired is that of firing in a hook turn. They usually don't fire when you are planned out scooting over the ground. The vigil on the other hand has a tendancy to fire while standing still.... I'm just kidding, and I don't want to start a cypres vigil debate. That was only a joke so if you think that you need to say something back to defend the vigil go right ahead, but let me forwarn you that I really don't give a fuck about it. -
How winds affect canopy flight...
Spizzzarko replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
The popping up technique is more for distance runs than anything. With Speed yes you are leaned over in the traditional carving speed runs, but it has been run as a straight course in the past, so there is nothing preventing the competition director from changing it in the future. -
How winds affect canopy flight...
Spizzzarko replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
True a cannon ball is not like a canopy, but the mass of meat suspended below it sure is. If you have a lot of speed developed from a good turn then it is very easy to get a canopy to climb on it's own. The JVX really likes to climb from my observations, and those dudes are having a hard time keeping it on the water for free style especially when they are unloading the canopy by placing weight in the water. -
PD Reserve wingloading 2:1 and higher
Spizzzarko replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Your welcome. I think you will find landing the 113r a non issue. If you can fly a small main then you can fly a small reserve. Demoing the reserve is a good idea, and I do not think enough people actually do it. The issue that you really don't want is to go from a spinning line twisted main to a small line twisted reserve. Maybe the sky hook can help this out, or ensuring that you are stable before deploying the reserve. I have not had line twists on my 113R. Maybe a bigger reserve could have helped marrianne out, but there are a lot of questions that are still un answered on that one. Either way it was a shitty situation. AS far as the dual out goes, just do your best to not let yourself get into that situation. If you are worried about firing a cypress in a hook turn then either get rid of the cypres or move to a speed model. More and more of us are going faster and farther, so this cypres situation can be an issue in the near future. The speed cypres will fire at 90+ mph, and I'm sure we are not going that except in freefall. Think about what the cypres is intended for... 1. To save you if you are unconscious 2. To save you if you are not altitude aware In both of those situations I'm sure you will be falling above the firing speed as 90 is pretty slow for belly flyers. You freefly (freefly is mooth) freaks fall pretty fast anyways. Another way to get two out is to pull low with the cypres. To fix this bumb up your decision and pull altitudes. If you pull by 3k then you will probably not be going fast enough to fire a cypres, or if you are in free fall below 2k just pull your reserve. This sounds a lot like a first jump course doesn't it. Funny how the basics will save you, and how we always come back around to them when we are facing a new delima of sorts. So have a good plan for emergency procedures and stick to your plan. We have rules so that we are not like the monkeys swinging in the trees flinging poop at each other. That is all. -
PD Reserve wingloading 2:1 and higher
Spizzzarko replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I load my 113R at 2.0 and jump up here in CO. I have landed it at 6500' field elevation no wind and hot, and 5500' no wind and hot. It fly's nicely and lands very nicely. I would not jump another reserve type. I do not think that I will be so hot to trot when PD does release their small packing reserves, as I like to have other people do my test jumping for me, but the PD 113R is tried and true, and I can vouch for it. The two out situation is a definate draw back to the bigger reserve smaller main issue but if you are smart you probably will not face that situation very much. I'm sure most of us are bumping our decision altitudes up as our main square footage goes down. Face it there is nothing gained by being in freefall below 3k with a small main. So if PD does release the super small packing reserves maybe it would be a good thing. I certainly would love the option of having a 143R or bigger, but again I'm going to let other people do some test jumping for me. I'm sure when PD releases a product that they have put much thought and testing into it, but I would like to see what people other than factory reps have to say about it. That is all. -

Spizzzarko replied to CanopyPiloting's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I fail to see why you are still bitching... The course is straight get over it man. If you can fly a carving course then you can fly a straight one. Also if you are good enough to compete in the CPC championship then you should be able to handle a little change in a course. If this is to much of a mind fuck for you then maybe you should reconsider coming out to Co because you obviously shouldn't be competitng then. -

Why are you complaining? It is easier accross the board for all competitors, so your argument is null and void. In case you have not noticed th format of the PST is changing quite a bit, and the CPC should mirror it. -

Has a "big boy" JVX even been made?

ummm You might need something a little bigger. The 92-96 of sail material packs up really freaking tight in a 150 container. That is all.
