  1. So you're saying PayPal can take money OUT of my checking account without my permission or knowledge?? Holy shit! I've got to get that disconnected. Our son got screwed out of several hundred $$ from PayPal letting an unauthorized user change the password. Sucked. I don't know he ever got it resolved fairly.
  2. Sorry to hear the bad news today. Kit will be missed by a lot of people.

    Meteor?

I was flying with an airline crew one day when the captain told me the week before they had flown past that crater. One of the flight attendants was up in the cockpit ( okay, on the flight deck) and he pointed it out to her. "Giant meteorite, going 30,000 mph, hit there making that huge crater" he told her, "One mile across, half a mile deep." He said she looked down at the crater, then turned to him and said "Oh, and look how close it came to hitting those little buildings down there."

    Door

Let's say the door is about 6.5' x 3' and the pressure differential is about 8 psi at 27,000'. That's about 11 tons of force outward on that door. And the slipstream of the plane is actually pulling the door out slightly due to Bernoulli's principle. It sounds like a partial failure of the latching mechanism, if I'm reading the story correctly. Why the masks didn't deploy, I don't know, but scary as hell. It was a similar setup on the DC-10 cargo door that cause the loss of at least one, maybe several aircraft, before they figured out the problem. It's economics. A door that closes from the inside takes up cargo/passenger space while open and also requires a heavier structure to cope with the pressure stress on the frame. An outside door can be made with a lighter surrounding structure because it carries some of the load when it latches in place. It also maximizes your interior space, but is inherently less safe.
  5. Is he sure he didn't shoot a homeless Vietnam vet?
  6. That is sometimes caused by the needle rubbing the face or lens. You can unscrew the face and gently bend the needle to or from the face as required.
  7. Yeah, I wore black and blue today too. Maybe I like it a lil rough.
  8. Twenty-five years ago? That's when some DZ's student gear was only 5 years old. There's some real garage sale gutter gear floating around as rentals at some DZ's. My son described some rental gear at an unnamed DZ to me and I told him not to jump there anymore.
  9. True confession, I sat on a plane with a 3 ring like that on a tandem rig. Jumper across the aisle caught it. It's now part of my self check routine. Lesson learned.
  10. Bingo. The hate comes from the pain of rejection. The opposite of love is apathy. If they hate you, they care. If they really don't love you, they don't care. Life and love are funny that way, aren't they?
  11. Sure. I really don't know, except that rectangular 7cell reserve should have a much shorter recovery arc than a 9 cell ZP elliptical. I've done a fair amount of crw but just with typical 7 cell mains, not specialty canopies. They seemed to recover very quickly from intentional down planes. That's just my own experience, though. YMMV,
  12. If you chop the main in a two out (which is the only one you CAN chop on most rigs), you'll be under the reserve (obviously). Most reserves fly very much like CRW canopies and should have short recovery arcs.
  13. Soon to retire air traffic controller. Then I'll be a part time skydiver and full time bum.
  14. And the real one. Goodbye, Scott Lutz. I have a new DB hero!
  15. A friend of mine did the rigging for a Ford truck being parachuted in a commercial. At the end of the commercial, the perfectly good, unscratched truck went off to the scrapper, with my friend offering to buy it. Liability concerns.
  16. I thought this would be about Cypres putting a smiley face on their display like Vigil does.
  17. Sounds good. I might try that one. It's got a lot of similarities to my barbecue rub.
  18. I sure do like it, but I feel the line between SI and Playboy gets more blurred each swimsuit issue. Do they really have to up the titillation factor each year? Why not be honest and just have them naked? Jeez, I sound like a grumpy guy with 4 kids.
  19. Does DD still call their largest coffee "The Great One"? We always hit DD when we're in Boston.
  20. Many, many pilots have made that mistake.
  21. Me too, but I say "afficionado" instead of snob.
