  2. Anyone know of an English speaking dealer for Skylark gear? I want to order a gear bag or two and need info on the rigging bag they make but Skylark is not replying to my emails directly. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  3. But does the Basic hold a TSO in North America? I know it holds a JTSO but I am not sure about the TSO. The lack of a TSO is what is holding several VectorII clodes from being legal in the States. It all comes down to who is on the line in a lawsuit. When sport jumpers die there is just a fraction of those incidents that end up in a lawsuit but most tandem fatalities end up in a lawsuit of some type. When any incident on the rig is going to result in a lawsuit the companies have to cover their own backsides since its been proven time after time that DZO's fold and leave the manufactor holding the bag and the bill. It would be nice to see some of the canopy makers working more directly with the tandem systems to build an "approved" list for each container size to eliminate the test jumping that is done in the field now. I do know that one company used to just kick out prototype canopies for DZ's to use and send feedback up after they jumped them with unknowning students. I think this is what the companies are trying to prevent. If you want to put your Icarus 330 into a MicroSigma (sweet combo BTW!) then Icarus should work with UPT to develop testing criteria sating here is the line trim and if it gets X out then it needs to be relined. I know now most of that is not published but UPT will help guide you on those numbers if you call them and talk to them. Icarus refuses to publish line trim info so I doubt they will do this but I think its a fair thing to put into an "Approved canopy" list. 4. 66/35 Not to bad and i missed a few easy ones. I also needed the letters to get it and would have been in the 20's with out the free letters. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  5. Right now the only info they get back from the field is "Fatality" and then sometimes "Injury". I can see the desire to be able to present some hard facts when the FAA comes knocking asking for information other than "We had 2 fatalities last year." 6. On this topic I ran across a few sets of type 17 risers recently where they used black type four tape on top of black type 17 webbing. That was seriously annoying since I stared for a few minutes and could not figure out what was not looking right. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  7. My favorite was showing up for a 8:15 appointment at 8:00 only to sign in and see there are 4 other people on the list that said they also had an 8:15 appointment and 4 people that said they had an 8:00 appointment when they opened. I was usually getting called into the room around 8:50 and seen around 9:30. This happened every week for a month straight since it was for a PT appointment so I know they were just stuffing as many people in as possible to make as much $ as they could. 9. Stolen credit cards being used to ship merchandise to drop spots where someone may or may not pick up the items. If they get picked up then they can resell locally or they can ship overseas to have it sold there. If the items are not picked up they just pile up at the location until FedEx/UPS stops delivering there anymore. Dateline did a story on this a long time ago. Basically since its stolen payment from the beginning even if only a fraction of the sellers ship anything its just pure profit for the end person. They ship to specific drop locations where they may have unknowing parties signing and forwarding the packages with out knowing their contents. 11. Tunnel can only simulate freefall, it would "help" for total malfunction training but what you are looking for is something that has the canopy out and you are going a lot slower than freefall speeds. Those issues will not be able to be simulated in the tunnel. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  12. A couple of recent studies have found state employees earn less than similar private sector employees when you look at education, time in job, etc. In the long term the pension they are able to draw is higher than a 401k payout so it needs to be considered also but be careful when you want to "bring in line" since the up front cost might jump since private sector pays way higher. Look at the military for example. Pay for a E4 to be an Air Traffic controller is less than 30k. They leave the military and can get a private contract (non FAA) for 40-50k. Thats more than a 20% jump in base pay for essentially the same job. Do we need to raise the soldiers pay to match what they would get on the outside? 16. Sizing is what ever some one has for sale at the moment but usually unless you are weird shaped there is a rig that will work for you. Also most people go through a few size canopies until they settle into one for a couple of hundred jumps. The issue is containers can only hold a certain range of canopies. You can't toss a small canopy into a rig designed for large canopies. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  17. On a tangent of your comments Bill, I was reading an article this week about how there are now more women attending college than men currently. What the research paper was examining was what the effects of a higher female to male population in college was doing for sexual behavior among college students and they found that sex was "cheaper" than its ever been for a male in college since there are now more women competing for them so the women are willing to have sex much faster in a "relationship" then what they would be willing to do if the numbers were reversed. Shah just go back to college full time and your issues are taken care of. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  18. I've got a Droid, iPhone and an older Samsung Rogue. I used to have a Pearl on AT&T but I now use the iPhone everyday on AT&T. If you are not locked into the BlackBerry platform via a large BES install look elsewhere. I am much happier on the Android and iPhone than I was on the Blackberry platforms and they have a ton more options and apps if you want them. 19. I'd be happy if they could just let me use a single bin at the TSA line for my laptop and iPad! How many cockpits currently have a USB port or even a 110 outlet for charging in them? I guess I am thinking more towards the GA side getting these once they get general approval. I know I've been sitting in the back a few times this year only to watch my battery drain to nothing over the course of flying for a day due to the lack of charging options in the stupid regional jets. 21. http://www.uspa.org/NewsEvents/News/tabid/59/Default.aspx At USPA’s request, Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon, Texas, changed the dates of when it will host the 2011 USPA National Skydiving Championships of Canopy Piloting to September 14-17. The event was originally scheduled to start in the first week of September, over Labor Day weekend. This date too closely followed the planned August 22-27 dates for the 2011 World Cup of Canopy Piloting in the Czech Republic, which the International Parachuting Commission recently sanctioned. 22. As a student you will use the Dropzones gear for a while so don't worry about a rig to get started. Onceyou are cleared to jump on your own and knowwhat size gear you will need then look for used for your first rig. Its a lot cheaper and just as good as new plus when you screw up a landing and tumble and get it really dirty or scratched up it hurts the ego less! 23. In years past we've used a few hours after Safety day to cover: AFF dive flow and changes to it. Specifically it was used to fine tune instructor exit placement and minor details around what goes in the log books. Tandem procedures and reviewing of harness placement Expectations for video deliverables. This had to do more around what the expectations were of the instructors to assist in getting good videos (rotation into the sun, lifting of students chin off video if they are not looking at the camera, etc) Review of Tandem requirements for pre jump briefings We've also used it for in-depth discussions around jumpsuit\shoes requirements for tandems among other items. Low cutaway

Jumper was on a 40 way skydive and after opening had a spinning main canopy. She was able to successfully perform a cutaway but the altitude in which she did this was insufficient to allow her to deploy the reserve prior to hitting the ground.
  25. Not at the Supreme Court level. They do not accept "evidence" for their hearings, they only listen to brief arguments and then are the only ones to ask questions. If there is "new evidence" than it has to be reintroduced at the federal district level and ask for a reappeal at that level. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
