as am i, unreal, finally someone i can identify with, i'm on my 28th year in th field. i know the "drill" trust me. i know all about it. it's what got me interested in sky diving to begin with. every time i'd fly out, especially over water, i always wondered, "what would it be like to jump out?" now i know! 300+ jumps, and a USPA coach rating, well 2 more "check dives" left. i originally trained at SDSL, tell Chris Miller i said "hello" i'm broken hearted about the men that have lost their lives, that's the reason for the post to begin with. i was in the north sea the year the year the "Ocean Ranger" semi-semi-submersible went down, all souls aboard....lost. it's something that kinda makes me fearless about sky diving, is at least i've got some control over myself, if i have to bail. you take care out there, keep you bow into the waves. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

i fly an assorted pair of DaKine freefly suits, and a Tony rw suit. i wear Otimix shoes, because they are designed for kick boxing, and have Velcro fastners, instead of laces, easy off, easy on...etc...i generally wear one of my old A&M jerseys and a pair (i know, i know) spandex biking shorts. they keep the "family jewels" in place! --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

oh i totally agree. but as i said in my post, i was just potraying a hypothetical crime. but i do believe we have made life on these types of criminals too easy. 500 years ago they were burning witches at the stake up state new york, mass. etc...point being we have let penalities lax to the point where people aren't even thinking twice about murdering each other because you won't "do much time for the crime" at the end of the day we have to as a society make the penalty for crimes harsh enough to create a firm deterrant. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

there is some merit in your comments. on the other hand, let's look at this from a different perspective for a minute. the main reason i don't drive 180 mph down the road with my car is because i probably will hurt myself, or kill someone else, PLUS, i dont want to go to jail, or have any trouble with the law. so thats a big deterrent. i believe it's up to society to set the standard for harsher punishments for such crimes, it more likely than not WILL deter some idiot at some time in his/her lives of committing a heinous crime. how many child molesters do you think we'd have if they knew IN ADVANCE that the punishment was death by "bula-bula" (surely you know what that is) i believe we as a society lowering the bar on our punishments have only increased the number of criminals. lets remember, we've come from busting rocks, and no ac, tv, radio, etc.....to suppluing them with luxery cells, hell, almost freaking condos to live in. they still get their dope in prisons, heck i could go on and on, but i wont. it's up to us, as a society to put the "fear of god" in these idiots. i remember a case about 10 years ago in louisiana, a man was in the court house, and the police was transferring the accused to the court room, the father of the assualted young boy was waiting for him in the corridor outside the court room, the accused never made it to the defense table, the father shot him dead right there, the father was indicted, but never convicted for the crime. now i'm not an advocate for "vigilante justice" but we do need to instill more fear in these peoples minds. stiffer penalities will deter a lot of crimes that are being purpetuated in todays world. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

a suggestion: if anybody who is between 20-200 jumps who isn't acclaimated to low altitude jumping, do your self a favor and stay current on your hop-n-pops. you'll get to know your canopy better, and if the occasion should arise to where you have to exit low, the "freak factor" wont take over. don't count on your AAD to activate your reserve in such a situation. also, if you ever get a chance, do a balloon jump. after a few of these experiences i've got to where i get a charge out of bailing at 2500-3500, definitely a different experience! always be prepared for the unplanned, have a plan "B" but we must constantly train. take care, be safe...stay ready! --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

this would certainly be your decision, if i were you i would seek the advice of a learned colleague, or a jumpmaster. packing teqniques definitely have an effect on opening speed, experiment with different methods according to the manufacturer's specifications and see which opening you like the most. i fly a Hornet 170 with a wing of 1.55-1 i pro-pack and do not roll the nose, it opens in 300'400' which is what i like, i flew 7 cell triathlons before going to this 9 cell Hornet, and they consistantly opened in 600'-800' regardless of how i packed the dang thang! that to me is unacceptable, for the very reason you brought up that i "quoted" you on in this post. me, personally, at 2K i bail, i'm going to my main, but thats me knowing my canopy. but the thing for you to do would be to talk to someone at your home drop zone that you know personally, and trust, that knows you, and your gear, and has seen you fly, that is, i believe your safest bet. good luck. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"
