I got to drive a 24 foot Ryder all the way to Albuquerque, NM (and back) in March of 2000. I had a partner, but it was still boring and uncomfortable. Here's a tip: DON'T drive through Arkansas on I-40 (bamBAMbamBAMbamBAMbamBAM). Obviously their highway budget gets spent on something else. Respectfully, SP

I will! I look forward to it! Respectfully, SP

Yeah, I know . . . my Father-In-Law's vacation time frame limited us to when we could go. It has been mid to high 90's here this week, so I have been "in training." We will have fun regardless. Thanks for the tip on the fans. I will post my description and attire here tonight before I crash for the night. I'll look for you and other that post replies here that they will be at DeLand on Sunday. I won't be able to stay long enough for an evening party . . . we are having dinner with good friends in your area before heading back to Orlando to plan Monday's activities. Thanks for the offer though! See ya! Respectfully, SP

I recently sent a letter to be included in Parachutist. I also sent it to Skydiving Magazine. Mike from that publication asked me where else I had shared it. I guess to get the best of both worlds, next time I would choose exactly which publication I wanted to be published in, wait until it showed up in the mag, then post it here or elsewhere. No harm in that, it just takes longer to get it out. Respectfully, SP

I am all about stickers. I suggest a more versatile design tha can be put on other things as well, rather than the oblong bumper sticker size. What do you think?? Respectfully, SP

Saturday June 15th I will be driving down to Orlando with my family, meeting all my in-laws for a Disney (etc.) vacation. Of course, I will have my rig safely stowed underneath the sunscreen and bathing suits in the back of the SUV. I will stop by DeLand on Sunday June 16th while visiting some good friends there, but I will not have time to jump. Monday June 17th the whole crew wants to go watch the Space Shuttle land at KSC . . . since watching the shuttle land doesn't really interest me, I plan to drop them off there and go make a couple of jumps at Skydive Space Center. I hope to see some of you at both places! I'm not sure if my recently ordered Dropzone.com t-shirt will arrive in time for the trip, but I'll figure something out and post it here before I go. Respectfully, SP

I strongly recommend going used at first. You are in LA . . . just shoot over to Perris and browse through Square One's rack. Or look on eBay (just do a search for "skydiving"). You can experiment with what works for you the best without a long wait or spending a lot of money. I still pick up used suits now and again. Once you are tuned into what type of suit works best for you, then you can order a brand spanking new, color-coordinates beauty. My most recent one of these is a Michigan Comp Suit - the best suit I have ever had! Respectfully, SP

I heard from Ted Strong today . . . he did not know about USPA's announcement before my email. He is checking on it and will get back to me with Strong Ent.'s official position. Respectfully, SP

Strike A Pose: Question for Tandem Masters
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in The Bonfire
1) If my tandem student is someone I know very well, I may have a little fun with them for the video/pics, like give them moose antlers. If it's a regular paying customer, I am more conservative - just smile a lot. I just feel that if I'm over-animated, it takes the focus away from the student, and it's their video/pics. I want the video/pics to be so good that they show them off to everyone they know. In that way I can share my love of the sport directly with one, and indirectly with many. What do y'all TM's prefer? 2) My friend wears mirrored goggles, giving clear ones to his students. He feels that it kind of neutralizes the TM so the wide open eyes (hopefully, anyway) of the student stand out more. I jumped on board with this; I like mirrored lenses anyway. Opinions please? 3) Please share your favorite camera-geeking poses (exit, drogue fall, opening) that have resulted in great pictures. Respectfully, SP -
This is an exact copy of part of a reply I got from TK yesterday. I emailed both he and Ted Strong yesterday. I am waiting for a reply from Ted, and I will get some more clarifications and post them here: 1) Situation #1: current Vector Tandem Master, no USPA Tandem Instructor rating . . . will he still be able to do tandems? 2) Situation #2: non-rated jumper seeks a Vector tandem rating . . . does he now have to obtain the manufacturer's "Type" rating AND the USPA rating to do tandems? Maybe this manual will tell the tale. Respectfully, SP

Congrats on passing through this milestone! I hope you were later dubiously decorated with a dessert of some sort?!?!? Where's THAT pic??? Respectfully, SP

my fave of all times was exiting the bomb bay of a B-17 (the one they used to film the movie "Memphis Belle." It was one for the history books. My favorite otherwise is anything with a ramp exit. Casa's are very versatile and are all over the place. Otters are even more all over the place, and are great because they are configured so well for floaters. Respectfully, SP

From USPA's Website: FAA Accepts USPA Tandem Program (06/07) The FAA has issued a letter of acceptance recognizing USPA's Tandem Instructor Course. Part 105 requires a tandem instructor to have successfully completed, and been certified, "by the manufacturer of the tandem parachute system…or a course acceptable to the (FAA) Administrator." Prior to FAA acceptance, a tandem instructor must have held a current tandem manufacturer's rating to comply with the regulation. Now, a tandem instructor can hold only a current USPA tandem instructor rating and be in compliance. Does anyone have the link to this FAA letter? I plan to make a call about this today - I'll post again here if I find out anything. I'm interested to know what Ted Strong and Bill Booth will do as a result of this letter. Respectfully, SP

So, what I am getting here is that "Tandem Instruction" fits my First Choice better. Well said - thanx! BTW - MM, I need to send you my digital mug for the pub! Soon, soon. Respectfully, SP

BTW - I did an AFF Level III with Chuck today with a 110 pound young lady from Camp LeJeune. By far the smallest my big ass has ever instructed in freefall. I wore my packing mat sized jumpsuit and her fall rate was surprisingly great. It went great . . . thanks, Chuck for being there ;) Respectfully, SP

It WAS an awesome weekend . . . for me, too. It was great to meet you two, and I look forward to skydiving with you in the future and sharing one of those beerses y'all were talking about. I'm glad you got to come down and get a taste of our hospitality. I think you're gonna like it here :) Respectfully, SP

Absolutely. I would list that as my First Choice if it were available Respectfully, SP
