  1. It begins with a focus that comes from having respect for the fact that our sport is inherently dangerous. This focus becomes second nature with experience, but the safest of skydivers are careful not to get complacent. This focus is on "safe" and not "cool." Once new jumpers realize that being safe IS cool, they won't mind taking a crawl-walk-run approach to things such as branching off into other disciplines, canopy downsizing, etc. Some folks, for whatever reason, just plain don't have that focus and are dangerous to themselves and others. The person you speak of may be coachable enough to be taught how to be a safe skydiver. Share your concern with an instructor or very experienced jumper that you trust at your DZ. Maybe you'll find some help. Arrive Safely John
  2. Fair winds and following seas . . . Arrive Safely John
  3. -The FAR segment you quoted includes the USPA "D" License. -A Tandem Instructor rated only by the manufacturer of the rig he is jumping can do tandems for "rides" only -A USPA Rated Tandem Instructor can do "rides" AND a skydiving training progression that includes tandem jumps at the outset Arrive Safely John
  4. I'll see if I can get a pic posted next week Arrive Safely John
  5. Please snap some digital pics of the damaged rig. It may be salvageable, especially if the harness has hip & chest rings. Let me take a look, then maybe I can help in some way. It may be worth sending the rig to Aggie at Sun Path and asking for an estimate. Arrive Safely John
  6. Pssst! Raeford is all of 3.5 hours from Ft. Lee! If you want some DZ's closer for your weekends, West Point is close, as is Skydive Orange and Skydive Suffolk. There should be some locals from those places here, just throw a post out there and see who bites! http://www.skydivethepoint.com/ http://www.skydiveorange.com/ http://www.skydivesuffolk.com/ If you have no transportation, I have a friend who is an Instructor at Ft. Lee, but drives down to Bragg almost every weekend (AND jumps at Raeford). I bet I can hook you up! I have known him since Basic Training, so he's GOT to owe me a favor by now. Let me know when you are ready to ship out - I'll PM you my contact info . . . Arrive Safely John
  7. Find your local feed store or farm supply store and get yourself some bag balm. It works for cows, and should do the trick for you too! Arrive Safely John
  8. This really made my day . . . when my wife said she didn't want to participate, I showed her the possible substitutes. She said GO FOR IT! My back hurts already . . . Arrive Safely John
  9. Congratulations! I have been in for 18 years, and it has been a great life. Look me up when you get to Ft. Bragg . . . email me with questions between now and then. Raeford is a busy DZ with a full-time Otter and two Cessna 182's. There is a Super Otter and Casa on call for special events. There is a skydiving school that does tandem and teaches AFF. Sky Kat gear store is on the premises, as is Aviator's bar and grill. A full-service Rigger Loft takes care of your gear maintenance needs. The Golden Knights train there, along with other military groups. You will love it here when you arrive. Of course, the only reason I hang out there is to absorb some of the magic from SkyMonkeyOne. I just can't seem to get in the damn pictures!?!?!? Arrive Safely John
  10. Please elaborate Arrive Safely John
  11. I don't pack a lot of RI rigs, but if the packing instructions specifically forbid it, I would substitute my wooden dowel and a closing plate. Otherwise I always use one. After I have removed the pull-up cord, I work the pin with my fingers. My rule of thumb (sorry for the pun) is if I can move it with my fingers, it's well within the 22lb limit. If it seems tight I do a pull-test. I have a friend put the rig on, I remove the ripcord from the pocket, and pull straight down with my little scale. I have a little gizmo I got from Dave DeWolf that keeps the pin from coming out of the loop. Most rigs have CYPRES's these days, and the silicone-impregnated spectra closing loops allow for a tighter pack job because they cause much less friction than Ty IIA sheathing. When in doubt, do a pull-test! Arrive Safely John
  12. I would remove "License" and ask "Why do you skydive." I like to know why people are in the sport. Folks are in it for lots of different reasons. I would also remove "Jumps last year" and ask about the specific disciplines they are now and have been involved in. As far as taking "advice," I have found that I can learn from anybody. Even brand new students may show me something new that their instructor showed them, and I might add that to the way I train students as well. It pays to stayopen-minded. Great question! 13. Listen, youse two . . . if you think you suck, and you say you suck, you WILL suck. If you trust yourselves to take a risk and be a part of an incredible first-time experience for a lot of fantastic human beings, and trust those of us who have the skills to organize it, then that is the best part of the whole ride. A positive mental attitude and focus on the vision we will all have for the formation is all you need to bring to the table. Arrive Safely John
  14. No worries . . . attitude is everything. You're in! Arrive Safely John
  15. I would definitely remove the CYPRES and reserve first. I asked two very knowledgeable RIgger guru's about Scotch Guard. They both said medium Scotch Guard (red cap). SHAKE the crap out of the can before application, and often DURING the application to prevent the liquid from clotting (which may stain the rig). One of the two guru's said TWO coats. I have a new Odyssey on the way with neon yellow pinstripes and embroidery. I plan on using the exact process mentioned above with the rig hanging up so I can keep the can level. I will coat the whole container, not just the light colored parts. Hope this helps . . . I look forward to seeing other feedback from those who have used Scotch Guard. Arrive Safely John
  16. OK, just 'cause I'm detail-oriented-like-that, I counted all in this thread who are committed to Raeford that weekend. I count eight! Do I hear that the DZ.com record is 10?? Can you see where I'm going with this?? Ahem!?!?!? Arrive Safely John
  17. I will be there all day the 4th and 6th, and possibly the afternoon of the 7th. Arrive Safely John
  18. Chuck Blue posted this in the Safety and Training forum. I posted this thread before reading the other . . . sorry for the double-coverage! Arrive Safely John
  19. I posted the link in the Talkback forum before I saw this one. Please excuse the double-coverage! Arrive Safely John
  20. Please help spread the word and help keep your eyes open for this rig, stolen from Raeford Parachute Center this week. It is greatly appreciated! http://www.skykat.com/stolen_rig.htm Arrive Safely John
  21. The biggie for me on the Sigma 370 is the light toggle pressure. The performance is, of course, AWESOME, but when you make multiple tandems in one day with a PD421 or Master 425 it tends to send you home with your shoulders smoking. Chuck is the man, just for the record. Respectfully, SP
  22. OK gang, I'm out the door for the 9.5 hour drive to Orlando. I will be at skydive DeLand sometime on Sunday. I am 6'2" and 225 with a big noggin and dark hair, clean shaven. I will be with my wife and two kids (boy and girl). I will be wearing a red shirt and blue shorts. I also wear a POW/MIA bracelet on my right wrist. See you there!?!?!? Respectfully, SP
  23. Yes. 3 times. All three times a Sentinel AAD fired high. All three times I successfully cut away the main and landed the reserve. See my thread on Jumping AADs: http:// http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forums/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=forumsafetytraining&Number=162366&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post162366 Also see the PIA report on dual canopy scenarios. I was there when some of the testing was going on. I am at a loss to find the website. Can anyone help?? Respectfully, SP
  24. Thanks . . . I'll call before I go. Respectfully, SP
  25. That is the way I interpreted it as well. Otherwise those who are currently "type" rated by the manufacturer but NOT USPA rated would be high and dry. That doesn't make any sense. This move does simplify things and make them less expensive, I agree . . . whether or not it is a "good" thing remains to be seen. I will be watching to see what happens. Respectfully, SP
