But how is this not in violation of natural law, as you've described it? Why would it be OK to violate natural law in one way (monogamy), but not in another (man-on-man bloody butt sex)? monogamy is not a violation of natural law, it is a fulfillment of it. -the artist formerly known as sinker

Well then what about if you eat some food that has had lots of flavours added to it and processing carried out that makes it taste better but takes away a lot of its nutritional value. Because you keep eating this kind of food all the extra sugar and fat begins to make you overweight. Violation? How far does the natural law go in distinguishing between pleasure and purpose? I'm genuinely curious. yes, i'd say so, to a degree... eating is certainly pleasurable, it was designed to be. but the pleasure is secondary, not primary. The primary end of eating, what it is designed for, is to sustain life. And to that end, if you consume nothing but McDonalds, you will be harming that life, by gaining weight and causing a general deterioration of your health. The pleasure of eating that food (and it is designed purely to be pleasurable, the secondary here has usurped the primary ends), is actually harming you, so yes, I'd say to a degree that is a violation. -the artist formerly known as sinker

simple really, and you know it... b/c we aren't merely animal... we're human beings. we're made differently. we're not just instinct and drive. if that is all we were, we wouldn't need prisons. we're expected to control these drives, and one we're expected to have control of is our libido. you can't reduce humans to simply animals. look at the incredible damage done to relationships when you do... when people don't control their drives and have affairs and all of that... -the artist formerly known as sinker

valcore, I'm very sorry that this tragedy has happened. I'll pray for you and your family, if you don't mind. In my own religious tradition, it is said that while the objective act of suicide is intrinsically wrong, the person committing the act may not be (and I'd add probably wouldn't be) subjectively culpable of a "sin" punishable by Hell. What I mean is, for someone to go to Hell, they have to freely, consciously, and with malice, choose an action that they fully know is gravely wrong, such as taking a life. As a former therapist who has worked with hundreds of suicide attempters, I have yet to find even ONE person who fit that description. All of them, ALL of them, were in some way incapable of freely making such a decision w/ malice. Depression clouded their reason or severe stress altered their judgement. If the depression or stressors were removed, these people would not have chosen to attempt to kill themselves. In these cases, I can't help but think that God is extremely merciful to them, given the immense suffering these people endured that drove them to attempt suicide. I hope this, at least in some small way, helps. -the artist formerly known as sinker

Aren't these contradictory? Please explain further, especially on how natural law relates to matters of morality. Cheers very good question... at work now, can't delve further for the moment... natural law is not the same as laws of nature, like gravity. Natural law, as it relates to human actions, has more to do w/ fulfilling the purpose and duty for what something was created for... for example, you eat b/c you need nutrition in order to live. You would not be acting in accordance w/ your nature if you ate something, just to experience the pleasure of eating, and then threw it up, so that you wouldn't experience the nutrition of the food. That is a violation of natural law. -the artist formerly known as sinker

point 1... you obviously know nothing of natural law. the church doesn't define it, the metaphysically of a thing defines it. The "stuff", what makes some thing what it is, defines it. Nature defines it. The church simply recognizes it and follows it as all men logically should. point 2... calling me hideous is a PA. didn't you once accuse me of hypocrisy b/c I called you a name? can't obey forum rules? point 3... the church is not in the business of physics, which it wisely concluded, although much of western civilization, including the university system, much of what we know of astronomy, etc., etc. came from catholic scholars. look it up. point 4... your rudimentary knowledge of papal infallibility is pathetic, honey. -the artist formerly known as sinker
