I recently found a cute little kitty near the roadside and thought I'd help it find a new home.... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

A building is a B An antenna is an A A span (bridge) is an S A cliff (earth) is an E A dam is a dam A smokestack is a smokestack A hot air balloon tethered at 500' is a skydive If you have to ask what an object is, it probably ISN'T what you want it to be. Don't mess with the system. A bridge pillar is a SPAN! In fun.....Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

It wasn't that many years ago that a good old tally light indicator was all we had. I made up this webpage many years ago..... Building a Tally Light Indicator (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I was told that it'll be ready in less than 2 weeks. If you didn't know, Cajones lost a LOT of equipment in the Elsinore fire about a week ago. Fortunately, the BDay 2003 video was not lost. I've just ordered 25 copies to sell on www.bridgeday.info, and I'll be taking preorders by this weekend. Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

That doesn't look like the "mushroom" method I've seen and used for years, unless there is a "mushroom #2" method out there. Many BASE jumpers do use the mushroom method. Basically, you S-fold the mesh (or the stem of the mushroom) under the F111 and the F111 drapes over the mesh. Then the bridle is S-folded on top of the mesh, but under the F111. When it comes out, it is symmetrical, ready to inflate, and it looks like the attached pic..... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

You might want to make a copy of your master tapes before they're sent out to a stranger. And since you're doing her a favor, she should pay shipping charges both ways. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Effective January 1st, 2004, the sport of BASE Jumping will not be accepting any new applicants. Just kidding. How will you know when you are ready for BASE? (that sounds like a question that Luke Skywalker would ask Yoda). When you are ready, YOU WILL KNOW. Make the required skydives and practice canopy control and landing precision. When you are comfortable with that, then see a BASE mentor or take a BASE FJC. Good luck. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

You're probably better off buying one off the shelf from Conceptus, but if you want some ideas for a custom switch, visit: http://www.vertical-visions.com/09switch.html I didn't like the stock switches, so I made one (many) myself. I always found myself wasting shots with bite switches, and the tongue switches make me move my tongue in abnormal positions. My "mouthpiece design" has been used quite successfully for years and utilizes the natural movement of your tongue toward the roof of your mouth while protecting your teeth as well. It was good meeting you at the Turkey Boogie. Stay safe over there and we'll cya later this summer.

Another way to look at the model release issue is the following: 1) Filmed on public property = No model release required. 2) Filmed on private property = Model release highly suggested. 3) Use of people's names = Model release required. In other words, if you jump at Bridge Day and then find yourself on a Discovery Channel program, you have no claim to compensation since it's public property. If I film you watering your lawn on your own property, then I could get sued if I sold the video and it aired on TV. If you vandalize my house and I catch your big fat ugly face on video, then I'm free to air the video anywhere, anyplace I choose. However, I can't list your name on the video. Check out the attached picture of the dumb vandal that I caught on tape after knocking my porta-jon over at my new house. Since this little weasel had rich, influential relatives in town, they bought their way out of a conviction. So, that's why the little a-hole is gonna show up in every magazine and TV program that'll show it. PS. My little vandal friend made his first magazine this month. Check out the December 2003 issue of HOME AUTOMATION magazine. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Tom must be going nuts by now..... So I'll keep this thread focused on BASE and post a picture of a jumper who had some problems getting his PC out of the pouch.... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

When I was in KL in 2001, I was SOOOOO looking forward to having a nice meal with a side dish of feline. Heck, even a can of sliced up kitty cat would be great to bring home and show all my coworkers. All we saw were dead pigs wrapped in newspaper along the streets. Bummer. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. Looking for Tandem Photo to use in Skydive Moab's Brochure

Clint, I hope you didn't think I was writing about you? I'm targeting production companies and magazines as the real cheap bastards out there. A guy like you who's starting a DZ, and is one of our own, should not necessarily be included. Since we're still talking about cheap-ass production companies, I got a call from the Extreme Sports Network (ESN) last week. Talk about cheap bastards. I sent them a 24 min BASE demo tape on request, and they had the balls to offer me $200 to repeatedly air the entire thing on their network. I'm still mad that I didn't tell the guy how much of a scumbag I thought he was. -Never send demo tapes out without them being on ultra low quality VHS or watermarked. -Watermark and slice your photos online to guard against theft. I've seen my best photos on the web stolen and used in newsletters and magazines overseas. -Ask for their shipper # when sending demo tapes so they can pay the bill. Heck, sell them your demo tape if you can. -Trust no one. I found some of my prized, never before aired BASE videos embedded into another "friends" BASE tapes that he was selling. He copied my footage one day while I was sick in the hospital. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted. -
I thought you all might enjoy this true story.... Back in December, I got a thick letter from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). In the letter, a PETA official complained about a 7-week old tiger cub that was brought to Bridge Day 2003 so spectators could feed it and get their picture taken with the cuddley creature. Also included in the letter were carnage pics of tigers and other animals that were mistreated in captivity. Anyway, the PETA folks were targeting me for this terrible crime against tiger cubs, although I never even knew the cubs were at Bridge Day. As the organizer for the BASE jumping, I don't really get the chance to see the vendors, nor do I have anything to do with them. So what would a good old West Virginia boy do in this situation? Well, I emailed those boneheads at PETA and told them to do more research next time before they start pointing fingers. I also told them I'd huck at live cat off a tall bridge if they bothered me again (FYI: I own a dog and love most animals) So, end of story, right? Wrong. The PETA folks forwarded my nasty-gram to the Bridge Day Commission (BDC). Fortunately, the BDC has a sense of humor similar to mine, and they got a good laugh at it. So, now the BDC has to deal with the PETA folks, who have now lied and issued a press release saying the BDC has outlawed animal exhibits at Bridge Day. http://www.peta.org/about/victories.asp I just talked to the BDC, and they have NEVER voted on this issue, nor outlawed animal exhibits. So, I'm asking all jumpers to snatch up any pesky neighborhood cat you can find.....you know, the one that always digs in your trash, and take it for a 'chuteless jump next time you're ready to make a BASE jump. PS. I'm kidding about the last paragraph. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Please start that new thread. Production companies and magazines are always "on a budget" and there seems to always be one sucker who gives away his video and/or stills for FREE. If I had a dime for every time I heard the "we're on a budget" line...... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted. -
If I wasn't still drunk from last night's illegal PCA jump (you know, the one where I used my fake ID, paid off the window washers, and then slapped on my fake license plates to lose the cops), then I would have really enjoyed this story. List was submitted to Outside this weekend. Only legal jumps were named. Thanks for your input everyone. We'll see if they'll pick from my list, or if all the energy drink hype will overwhelm them enough to unfortunately choose the Christ Rio jump. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. I want to know who the guy is who survived a slider down terminal opening? Please elaborate on how this happened. I've heard of it happening at least one other time. Thanks. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Lordy, lordy...... -10 years ago, we laughed at the thought of jumping a "pin BASE rig". -Pin rigs don't necessarily open faster than Velcro rigs. Maybe when you're pulling the bridles by hand on the ground, but when you're 5 seconds into freefall, the snatch force from the PC is fast and strong enough to yank anything from your back quickly. Have you ever tossed a PC out a car window? Don't try it....it'll yank your arm off. -Why are B12's not advised for beginners? I say they're safer for beginners when they plunk down into the Snake River and need to get out of their harness. Maybe we need to put "UNSPONSORED, UNBIAS JUMPER" at the bottom of our posts from now on? To answer the original question in this thread, I believe there are few, if any, bad BASE canopies on the market. Canopies from BR, CR, Vertigo, and Morpheus (Troll) are all widely used and acceptable for most every type of BASE jump. Vents should be purchased if applicable to your most common type of jump, and really have nothing to do with experience. If you're in Moab, get vents......if you're near a terminal wall, then non-vented may better suit you. My best advice to you is to wait, and talk to as many jumpers as you can to see what they are jumping and what they prefer. Good luck. Have a good weekend everyone. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. Legal jumps sound much better. While Thor's jumps were definately cool, our pre-planned trip to NYC the following weekend had to be cancelled. There was a lot of bad press over those jumps. Thanks for your input everyone. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Good ones. I think Robert's flight from that massive Switzerland cliff was impressive, but Yuri had a longer flight. I almost forgot about DW's double gainer from 180'. Any more bad jumps? (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I just got a call from Outside Magazine. They are doing an article that will include the "Baddest BASE Jump". They need some help and I offered to post it here for everyone to vote. Initially, they spoke of BJ Worth's jump into the Hole from a helicopter (not really a BASE jump anyway) and Felix's Christ Rio Jump (NOT the lowest, or baddest jump out there). Gotta love all that press that some of those sponsored guys get! I told him a few that I thought were the baddest and they include: -Mark H's first ever jump into the Hole -Owen's first ever WTC jump (anyone remember his full name?) -Steve B's 63' cliff jump in Ohio in the early 1990's. -BASE 428's gainer through the small triangle at the Green Giant (sorry, another shameless self promotion) I need your help with this. Got any more "bad" BASE jumps that you think should be on the list? Outside Mag needs to know ASAP, as usual. Post 'em here or email me ASAP. Thanks. (c)2010 Vertical Visions.
