  1. So I have been doing some online shopping and comparing and I think so far my favorite choice is the Sony DCR TRV 22 (which I think is the exact same camera I had that was stolen) . It is a step up from the TRV 19 and has the manual focus features vs. automatic which I think would be sort of important??? The PCs are a little more than I want to spend right now but I think I will check out that one PC that fits my lens that I already have. There are two TRV 22s listed on Ebay and FreekFlyer also has one he might want to sell. Does anyone have any experience with these? In the Ebay descriptions, the same exact camera, one says the tape is Digital8 and one says Mini something. Can someone please explain the difference between this Digital8 and MiniDV? There is an obvious difference in the camera body but as far as it being "digital" or completely "digital compatable" is there a real difference? Okay back to researching. Any feedback or opinions on experience with the TRV would be awesome. I have surfed through a couple threads where it seems to have gotten some decent feedback by some very experienced camera flyers but if you can chime in, please do. Thanks! 2. Thanks everybody for the replies/PMs. I AM interested in buying a camera if someone has one they are not using, I just have to decide/figure out which one I am going to buy. As for the L bracket and D Box, I do not have a D box. I wasn't sure if I wanted/needed one and also not sure of the camera measurements yet. If the L bracket is the same as the still camera mount, yes, my FLatTop narrow came with that. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  3. So I have decided to start shooting video again after about 3 years (and all of my old camera equipment being stolen). I have started all over in purchasing all new equipment and do not have a clue or whole lot of experience with what I need to buy and all the new stuff out on the market. So far I have ordered my FLatTop Narrow, still cam, ringsight, Cameye, etc. I have everything except my camcorder. It turns out the JVC I do have and had intended to use is most likely not compatable with the equipment used at the DZ. I have already bought a Kenko wide angle lense and filters for that camera which has a 37mm size thread on the lens. It seems like all of the "newer" cameras on the market are tiny and incompatable. I know I need a digital camera and not Hi8 but I honestly don't know the difference between digital 8, High8, DV, mini DV... Are there any super knowledgeable video gurus out there who can recommend a digital camera preferably Sony that will support a Kenko wide angle lens with a 37mm thread? Until then, I am going to just keep reading and trying to make sense out of all this high tech camera stuff. Thanks in advance for the help/advice. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 4. The Pro is wider so you can mount more on top of it. (HeHe I said mount) Anyway, my goal is to go smaller with my video equipment, not bigger. If I don't need the mounting space, I don't want the extra weight/bulk. And IMHO, bigger is not always better Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  5. Whoooa ... that third picture speaks for itself I haven't been to the Six Flags in Jersey, only been to Jersey once and Six Flags wasn't on my list. I used to go to Six Flags in Valencia, CA all the time. That park looks like a very fun one. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Looks like I have another place to put on my list. And... I have heard good things about CrossKeys too. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

  7. I believe golf is a torturous mental game created by the devil. In my three experiences with the sport, serious injury and or death could have been the result. Not to say serious injury or death did occur, but the possibility was strong. Never before in any game or competitive sport has such uncontrollable profanity crossed my lips. It was fun on all occassions, but the kind of fun some of my students describe to me about skydiving. They aren't sure why they continue to jump from this airplane but they are determined to do it and get better at it. Yet they question ... what am I doing this for again??? I am hoping to play more golf this year and maybe pick up some skills. However, skydiving with me is probably waaaay safer than playing golf. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 10. Okay, I see your point also. I am going to go take an aspirin now. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  11. *** The object in question is being accelerated from 0 to terminal velocity! Quote Maybe I misunderstood the question but what I gathered from it was the person was asking about weight vests and the physical principle behind why they can be used to help two jumpers attain similar terminal velocities. Because he did not specify someone using these weight vests to B.A.S.E. jump off of bridges or hovering helicopters I just assumed he was talking about jumping out of airplanes . If it is airplanes he is talking about jumping out of, you are not accelerating from 0-120. We don't skydive in vacuums therefore it is necessary to take into consideration the resistance of the air molecules bouncing off of us which we call the relative wind. And if we are presenting something to the relative wind, it then becomes important as to what surface area we are presenting and how much mass is behind it which when combined with the acceleration of gravity is equivalent to weight. Even in a wind tunnel the wind resistance will need to be turned up for different people doing different things. For instance, a free-flyer on his head in a tunnel requires stronger wind power to keep him in the same "floating spot" as a very lightweight belly flyer due to his increased mass and decreased surface area presented to the wind. 12. Hey PilotDave: For one, this statement makes absolutely no sense logically at all to me, second, I never said anything about terminal velocity only being related to inertia. If you read what I said I said that by adding weight to the same surface area of the jumper you are increasing the jumper's mass and thereby decreasing his/her resistance to an opposing force while in motion. The motion in this case is created by the acceleration due to gravity and the resistance in this case would be the air molecules of the relative wind bouncing off your body. The balance between those, the jumper's mass and the surface area presented, is what determines an object's terminal veloctity or descent rate. Quote Inertia is, like you said, related to mass. Terminal velocity is related to both mass (weight really) AND drag coeficient. Quote Yes, and again that is why I mentioned how a jumpsuit can increase or decrease the drag by increasing and/or decreasing surface area presented to the wind. You gave the example of an open parachute. Same principle. Quote Don't make it more complicated than it is... it's already rocket science. Quote I don't think I made it any more complicated than it is. Personally I would just like you to explain what you meant by the very first statment of your reply to my post. I think I get what you are trying to convey but it still doesn't make sense. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  13. The answer is inertia: Inertia is the tendency of things to resist changes in motion. An object's inertia is related to it's mass or how much matter something has. The greater the mass of an object, the greater it's inertia. Therefore, the more resistant the object is in a change of it's motion. Adding weight to a skydiver will increase his/her mass and create a greater inertia or resistance to a decrease in speed exerted on the jumper's body by air molecules. Fall rate can also be increased by decreasing surface area presented to the wind in the form of drag i.e. wearing a tighter jumpsuit made of materials like nylon and spandex vs. a baggy free-fly suit made of polycotton. 14. I used to live in Calabasas. I liked the area but it of course depends on what you're looking for. I lived there a while ago, probably 10 years or so (was there for the Northridge earthquake in '96). I think all of Ventura County in California is a nice area. I don't remember if it is actually in Ventura county or not but it is pretty close. You also aren't far from nice beaches like Malibu. As far as DZs, when I lived in that area, I learned at Cal City which is a very fun DZ and I also frequented Skydive Taft. Both neat drop zones. There are others around Southern Cal like Perris and Elsinore too. The cost of living is fairly high but you are talking California, I am sure you are expecting that. I lived in California for 22 years. I liked it then but I would not go back now because now I am more into country living and not crowded city overpopulation and the hassles that go along with it. There is never a dull moment in the San Fernando Valley. Get ready for earthquakes, fires, floods, riots, mudslides, etc. but L.A. is one of the most eclectic cities with some of the finest restaurants and most fun nightlife and attractions around. 15. Nice! I just ordered my Bonehead FlatTop Narrow recently and it will be here the week of the 14th. I am way stoked. I'd like to check out the pictures of your helmet. I looked at quite a few before I decided how I wanted mine. Enjoy and be safe. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

  18. Aaaaaawwww, poooooooooorrrr Vinnie Winnie ... Not gettin enough sunshine???? I am sending some sunshine your way. Hopefully it will make those mean old nasty rain clouds disappear for you before the weekend. Can you feel my rays man? Okay let me know how it works. Edited to add: If it doesn't work, I give you permission to sacrifice ChopChop to the Weather Gods. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  19. I like getting my friends and myself ripped on a tropical drink I concocted when I lived in Hawaii. I haven't named it yet (I am sure there is a name for it already somewhere) but it is: start with a cup 3/4 full of ice next add 1 shot of Vanilla Vodka then 1 shot of Coconut Rum (Myers is good or any light rum will do), stay away from 151 then fill the rest (should be about 1/2 full) with pineapple juice. Mix with a shaker. Enjoy. Mmmmmm, yummy
  20. LOL!!! Wait Squeak ... He would owe beer wouldn't he? He seems to think he is part of the "Exempt Beer Status Club" due to his jump # being over 1000. BTW, is it true anywhere else that once one has crossed the 1000 jump mark, one must buy a keg of beer to be enjoyed by one's skydiving comrades and cohorts then one is exempt and never owes beer again? There must be some tradition for one who achieves Master Rigger Status, come on Master Riggers, help me out here ... Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 21. I gave up a zoological expedition to Belize. Yeah, it would have been about the coolest trip. PhDs, archaeologists, marine biologists, geologists and biologists from all over the world meeting in Belize to do various research together. Yep, I had the chance to go. I paid the deposit to go, then made my first skydive, then my second, then my third, then I realized I no longer had the money to go to Belize ... then my fourth skydive ... then my fifth ... I'm coming up on my 1000th here pretty soon and I still haven't been to Belize. But, I just found out there is a Boogie there once a year so ... now skydiving has given me a reason to go! And BTW, I have NO regrets about getting into skydiving. I have been in the sport 9 years now. Since I started skydiving, I have met some of the most fun people, had more fun in my life, traveled and lived in so many different and cool places, had a beautiful daughter, made amazing friends, teammates, and boyfriend, medaled at a US Nationals with an amazing group of people, etc... The list goes on. All in all I would say, It's all Good. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  22. What an awesome thread. I read every word and learned a lot from this one. As a fairly new AFF-I, I have at times questioned how I have dealt with some students. Am I too easy, etc. I have found that women seem to be more clingly and are noticeably more exit-phobic. It is interesting to hear other's stories and experiences with different types of students. I have had to pump many of my students up to believe in themselves and when you see them break through their fear and accomplish their TLOs and "get it" it is a great feeling. I liked reading what I think was Ed telling his student that he believed in his capabilities or he wouldn't have let him move forward and to remember his pull priorities. Great thread. 23. Wow, I am so there!!! Now I know what I am saving up for next year. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  24. Well, what can I say ... I am very proud of my boyfriend Kelly (Skybeergodd). Not only is he a complete Stud, he is now also a Master Rigger. I have to say, I just started rigging last year with him and I have learned so much from him. The man really knows his stuff. Getting your master rigger ticket is not "easy" and from what I gather, he breezed right through, finished a day early and now he gets to come home
  25. Aha, isn't that the ole Desert Express? Made my first jump outta that plane March 26, 1996. With a couple of the Flying Elvi! Whew Hoooooooooo!!!!! Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
