I intended to try a single tandem for the fun of it, but signed up for the static line FJC with a friend who couldn't afford a tandem (AFF wasn't available at the time). As soon as I got out on the step I knew I was hooked. Made two jumps the first day and was off the static line after 7 total. Bob

We're not talking about a rig stolen from a campsite or some such. A skydive was made and the rig was clearly being used. I consider cutting away a canopy during a skydive an intentional loss while in use. If it had not been in use, the loss described could not have occured. Bob -

I've not really seen casual disregard for lines described. I have seen people step on lines accidentally. What I hate is when I'm crossing a packing area tiptoeing very carefully so as not to touch anything and someone literally yells "Don't walk on the lines!!!" I'm not. Chill. Ironically, wear from walking on lines is a moot point for me as I tend to replace linesets every 250 jumps anyway. Bob

I'm probably misinterpreting something, but I took the original yoke mis-control reference as applied to the horn going off. When an airplane stall warning goes off, the correct reaction is to push the stick/yoke forward and increasing power. That same reaction will get you killed in a helicopter when the low rotor rpm warning goes off, which is usually best handled by pulling back on the cyclic and lowering collective. Bob

Huh. I've not tried the PRO rating thing, but I'm not the greatest at accuracy and would probably choke on jump #9 or #10, if not before. I guess I just don't know how to fly my canopy. Bob

Throwing leaflets afterward would be a waste of effort as the prospective readers would be dead, not injured. Instead, drop leaflets 48-72 hours ahead of a strike. Lot's of graphics pics of what is going to happen and a message "Come out unarmed, on foot with your hands up in the next 24 hours, or face the consequences." Then make good on the threat. Armed forces don't exist to wage peace, they exist to wage war and win it. It's not about being nice. I sure as hell hope it doesn't come to this... Bob

You won't have any money for gas, much less jumps. If it's just a matter of the guage (as opposed to a tank mounted fuel pump), I'd suggest careful and conservative tracking of how much you put in the tank and how many miles you drive (use the trip odometer if you have one). You might be able to delay a costly repair until you can better afford it. Remember to placard the fuel gauge "INOPERATIVE". Ahhhhhh yes... first rig ... BEER!

Sounds effective. I really like a pullout, but have always disliked the pud and favored the hackey. I built and jumped a hackey pullout for a while until it was cut off in a wrap. I've never liked the plastic handle, so of course that's what I'm currently using. Bob

I got into skydiving via aviation. I'd been a pilot for years and had bought a plane, flown it, sold it, and then regretted selling it. I started looking for other things to do with no intention of taking anything up. Tried aerobatics, gyrocopters, helicopters ... hmmm ... skydiving .. that could be fun ... In hindsight it's no surprise I became a CRWdog. I'm somewhat uncoordinated and it generally takes me longer than most to develop enough muscle memory to overcome it when learning a new trick. I was never really athletic or very physically fit until I started jumping and doing CRW. I spent a lot of my childhood bench warming and never really felt part of anything. All that changed when I got into competition CRW, so I guess one could say skydiving helped me develop a sport. Bob

I've always gotten an I & R and will continue to do so, at least for those reserve packs that actually get through the cycle . I've known people to jump a freshly out-of-date (ie. a few days) pencilled reserve for the weekend then leave it with the rigger, but that's pushing it. Bob
