I used to have a first year (1964) red white blue. I do remember it was taffeta with a 1.1 ripstop apex if you want to go original.

Looking for 17w15 old school machine. Just the head or complete or head for parts. Anyone remember these?

Call Sandy Reid at Rigging Innovations In Eloy. We are restoring an original. I sent him one a while back. JT

This is just the kind of report that is needed. Thank's JT

Pretty big and bulky. I had one made by the late Ted Pullam. What a machinist/rigger. I will try to post picture. Simple, flat and half the size. Drill and tap 2 small holes in slide plate. Had it duplicated a few years ago from another machinist. He charged around $75. Worth more than the current commercial folders.

Don't try to set the hook so it passes within the scarf dip. Have the body of the hook in line with the shaft of the needle. The loop formed on the scarf side should be 1/16" or more. No need to have the hook closer than that. Worth a try. Remove top plate, run material, with bright flashlite, watch hook catching loop. You may have done this already. JT

I believe on that model the hook clearance is adjustable to the needle. Sure you have the right needles? If groove is to big for thread, loop may not form large enough. Good point on the scarf.

If you get it, to solve the lock up problem, disconnect something and see if it frees up. Then you know which side of the disconnection the problem is. Keep doing that and you will find it. Works on just about everything. It will probably take alot of time, and if a bent or broken part, alot of money. Sorry, JT

Try lowering both upper and lower thread tensions. Upper may be squeezing twist from thread. Make sure both threads are feeding smoothly. Try different densities of practice webbing. (condition U and condition R) Who knows? It may be one of these.

We received the first red and white strato starts for our team. Cant remember if the packing tabs came from Para Flite. However, they were on within a month, made of 3/4 binding tape. That had to be 1974 or 1975. D-3411

I do the maintenance on a Pitts S2B. Owner has 2 square rigs and one round. Squares are for him and his wife. He has 4k jumps she has 500+. Round is for regular passengers.

I appreciate the time spent from all of you. jt

Terry, you have been the biggest help so far. Thought there may have been a site out there as a reference.. JT

I have packed hundreds of reserves back in the 70's and designed and built harnesses and containers. However people are handing me pilot rigs etc for repacks and I am having to bother my friends to find out what the problems were on the particular system. Just thought that someone out there would have notes on which ones to avoid. Thanks
-
After taking quite a few years off, I am not wise all of the bad points of the reserves through the years. Some of them you just have to know about. Is there a list out there that someone has compiled that would alert me to a problem with an older round or even a square that should be further researched? Of course there are the service bulletins, but a general list or site would be wonderful. Thanks JT

This is all good stuff! I go one step further and have the actual 3-ring activation done by hanging their risers with their rig. This tells them if their system would have had a hard pull on the cutaway system because of lack of maintenance on yellow cable and stiff ring mounts. Don't let them get hurt when they drop.

I am going to reline a Spectre 150 this week. I bought a line set from PD. It will be like changing garden hoses. I found out canopy was out of trim from line trim chart on PD web site. Most of the line lengths can be duplicated from that chart. A call to PD will give you anything else you need. Use lighter thread. I am using Singer 17w15 to sew finger traps. Good luck. JT

Does anybody know this manufacturer of rigs?
gb1 replied to skydiverwannabe's topic in Gear and Rigging
Look's like all the other rigs out there. Not much different from the ones developed in the mid 1970's. -
Just find a Singer 31-15 for $200 or less, with table and stand. You will be surprised what you can do with it and what it will do for you. Get rid of the rest of that junk.

Anyone ever powder coat, paint, plasti dip their reserve handle?
gb1 replied to kilroywashere's topic in Gear and Rigging
I received a warning from local FSDO yesterday about powder coating wing lift struts. The inspector also warned that powder coating can hide cracks. Powder coat system requires heating to 450deg F, which can change heat treat value. Might be worth checking in to. May not be an issue with a ripcord handle. -
I remember him from years ago. Thank's Jim

High speed, It is pretty obvious that you were around then and know your stuff! You are right about the location of the skin and Steinthal. I haven't heard that name since 1974. At first SSE said the turns were because Steinthal did not use walking needle machines. Later it was said there was some secret mistake, making different size cells. I know that there is and old rigger out there that has a skin in his pile. I found the retainer rod in mine, from one of the dozen or so that I converted. We can make a skin from your description. Thank's Old Timer. Jim T

When the strata star first was released, 30 were delivered. 10 were red/white and went to the Beechnuts. 10 went to the Pelican team, don't remember what their colors were. 10 went to Para Flite dealers. The originals had a snakeskin I believe on the bottom of the canopy for the pilot chute retraction feature. They had a malfunction rate similar to the baby plane. The ropes would draw canopy material through the rings creating "astro vents".

I am helping Sandy put together an original Beechnut Strato Star. It was my understanding that we pulled the red line down to retract the pilot chute because it was pulling on the rings, trying to collapse the canopy! Boy, the junk we tested. Alot of malfunctions till we switched to diaper tails or bags. There was a nylon rod about 3in long that indexed after pulling red line. This was to lock pilot chute down so you could let go of the red line. I found one in my old stuff! Thank's Jim Tafralian Beechnuts
