Wow - there's some big news. Do you think us libs didn't know that? There's a teeny tiny difference between believing something enough to censure, contain, sanction, etc. versus believing enough and embellishing enough and LYING enough regarding an IMMINENT THREAT to actually take us to WAR and lose 525 (and counting) American lives, who knows how many Iraqi lives, and cost a couple HUNDRED BILLION dollars. Tiny difference.

Are you in Eugene? Get here much?

Sometimes it does harm more than just the reputation of those doing it. Like in the attached picture for example, where Old Glory decides to fight back. Actually, I very much agree with you and have had a couple heated debates with "patriots" about flag burning. While I love our flag immensely, it is just a symbol. What makes America really special is the Bill of Rights and our freedom, including the freedom to have unpopular views and to express them. Seems like the height of irony that so many hard-core "patriots" feel so strongly about enacting a law, let alone a constitutional amendment that stifles our precious freedom.

Yes - very good point - I have read that also and personally will only use it on occasion and never more than a couple nights in a row. Thanks for mentioning.

Interesting. Off hand, it makes sense - maybe I'll have to read up on it. . . IN BED! Not.

Besides melatonin, the other method I use is reading, preferably not something exciting like a murder mystery. Someone else I know uses books on tape to get to sleep. . . P.S. Thanks for the suggestion to Chris about getting someone to post updates for him after surgery - good idea.

Have you checked out melatonin? Natural hormone that your brain produces to regulate sleep. Very effective for many people - not only to get to sleep, but to get into lots of deep REM sleep. So much so that most people report a side effect of significantly greater and more vivid dreams. Too much for some people - they have nightmares. Folks also swear by it for jetlag. Buy anywhere over-the-counter, cheap. If you haven't tried it yet, worth at least reading about, if not trying. Good luck, sweet dreams. . .

Is George W Bush well placed enough for you? (see photo in previous post)

Doesn't seem like it could be illegal, but I don't know. Disrespectful? Disgraceful? I guess that's in the eye of the beholder - seems like it to me, but I value the 1st amendment more than a piece of cloth. At least Kid Rock is just an entertainer - hardly expected to know all the ins and outs of the US Code. For instance: The US Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Sec. 8, under the heading "respect for flag," states: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." But you would think someone in government would know the basics of the code, unlike the dipshit in the attached photo. Gee, who is that??? Yup - it's the president himself. . .

Ya Think??? Kudos - you lasted WAY, WAY longer than I possibly could have. Speaking of dinosaurs, did you know that God also created light from the stars already "on its way"? How else to explain galaxies millions of light years away in a 6000 year old universe? Boy, God sure has a sense of humor - or way too much time on his hands. . . Clearly you can not sense the sracasm. I gave up first. My sarcasm ended the debate. Of course I believe in Creation so what do I know, I am a fantaic who is beyond reasoning with. Honestly not trying to be offensive here, but I personally found it hard to tell what was sarcasm very early on in the exchange. . .

ExtraSolar Planet - Direct Detection Oxygen & Carbon
gary350 replied to gary350's topic in The Bonfire
Good point, but I really was thinking about interpreting the data, rather than collecting it - seems like a fairly significant part of the process. The Hubble actually doesn't 'produce' anything but ones and zeros, right? -
Whuffo? Whuffo you wanna do that shit? Hey - let us be impressed and amazed. And if ALL current CH-47 pilots can do that, then I am impressed with ALL OF YOU!

ExtraSolar Planet - Direct Detection Oxygen & Carbon
gary350 replied to gary350's topic in The Bonfire
The first direct detection of oxygen and carbon in the atmosphere of a planet outside our Solar System has been made using the Hubble Telescope. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3432629.stm It's not like this is a big surprise discovery or anything, but I think it is spectacular that it is actually being observed/proven. Wonder why there doesn't seem to be any more news about it anywhere. Is it because the results haven't been independently confirmed or published by the journal yet? Or maybe I'm just too easily impressed and it isn't really that big a deal? -
I cannot vouch for the accuracy of any of this, but I got it from a site that had this to say about it: I'm sure all of you have seen many choppers make some daring moves, but this one is spectacular. Hope you enjoy it. This attached shot was taken by a trooper in Afghanistan. Pilot is Larry Murphy, PA National Guard. Larry is a Keystone Helicopter Corp. EMS Pilot employee called to active duty. I must state that this is a unique landing operation. I understand that this particular military operation was to round up suspects. We have some super reservists and National Guard folks out there in addition to our volunteer troops.

Hi Power?!? That is So old-school! And SOOOO cool! I have been DA-only for years now, but I learned on a factory-custom Hi Power in the early 80s - satin chrome, worked trigger, pachs. . . God I loved that gun - thousands and thousands of rounds thru it. [tearing up a little] Bet you arch-consevative types never thought a pinko like me would be a gun nut, huh? Truth be told though, I am for stronger gun laws - for everyone but me, that is. . .
-
OK - I've been doing a lot of posting to political threads the last couple weeks, and it's been too long for me, watching all these gun debates and not weighing in. So here's a picture of a poster with ONE of my feelings on the subject. . .

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. -John Quincy Adams If you're going through hell, keep going. - Winston Churchill That which does not kill me makes me stronger. -Nietzsche Good luck, man. Never give up!

If I start a brand new thread with this picture, I'm afraid one or two of the nice, calm neo-cons on the site will burst a vein about my incessant Bush-bashing, and then I will feel awful. So, I am going to hide it in this thread. Sorry if a repost or a fake - too funny to pass up, even if it were NOT George Bush, though I will admit to it being even funnier because it actually IS him (remember the whole "Bush or Chimp" thing. . . )

Hey downwardspiral, I read about you being a CH-53 chief. This is only a Chinook, but have you seen this picture? Holy shit - is that as scary as it looks?
