Skydiving becoming MUCH safer for students ?
skydivejersey replied to XWuffo's topic in Safety and Training
Better canopy controls. Only because they have had to do more jumps to get to the same level of proficiency as an AFF student. SL students are not inherently better pilots. That statement makes no sense. Look at an AFF student whos got 20 jumps and a SL student who's got 20 jumps and you'll find comprable levels of canopy skills. In 19 static line jumps. I was not taught to spot once. Look at the plane not the ground. How does that help with spotting? No it is not. If there is a safer was of learning we should be dismissing SL IMO. Generally AFF works out cheaper in the long run anyway so I think the economic arguement for SL is flawed too. Safer / Cheaper - how is wanting to dismiss SL pointless? I set a DZ up on our little Island here in Jersey. No way on the planet I am going to start offering SL progression. -

Yes. Yes I did. I also can't see it changing in the next 1000 jumps. -

Not on my 100th!

I had a look through RWS but it doesn't mention anywhere what systems it fits to but looking closer at the riggers fitting instructions it doesn't seem particularly pack specific. Maybe a rigger could answer that one?

Skydiving becoming MUCH safer for students ?

Maybe I'm just coloured because about 2 weeks ago we had a 2nd jump SL student get wrapped up in her main at my local DZ, go bounce and die on her way to the hospital. I learned the SL way but when people ask me now I say AFF every time - to me it's the far safer alternative. There are so many more potential hazards with SL over AFF I would be interested to see how many malfunctions are caused by SL in terms on percentages compared to AFF (ie leaving student canopy control issues etc aside). Plus what do you learn in the .5 of second you have to demonstate competence to your instructor. jack shit is the short answer. You get as much air time on level 1 AFF as you do in 90 static lines. pointless IMHO. Don't slam - my opinion only. -

To my mind the static line system is great if your jumping rounds otherwise you are asking a student with little time to get stable. Then you are asking them to stick their hands up into the way of a parachute deploying over the top of their shoulder in a manner it is not designed to. Just my opinion. SL are dangerous (relatively speaking) compared to the more progressive, and thankfully increasingly more popular ways of learning to skydive. -
I would like to know more about the skyhook system. Can this be fitted to a teardrop? Thanks.

Been there. Thought I could get one in before work and save a few minutes by jumping in my suit & shirt. Won't make that mistake again. 2 big red marks on under the chin for a week!

Student skydiving will be a hell of a lot safer once the static line system is dead and buried IMHO. -

I have a friend who jumped from a plane and landed with a parachute (yes the 2 stages were on different sides of the channel) when he crossed the channel under canopy with his time in the French Navy. And he did it at night. I don't even think this was the first "unaided" flight. How can Felix claim firsts here when he is most certainly not. It was a good stunt in the publicity it raised but to claim to be the first and record holder etc is just not factually acurate. I don't even know if he is the first to hangglide across the channel.

Its our next JSA beer meet. The weather has turned fucking hot. The beer will be cold and I will be sitting in a beer garden with 40 other people I can't bore by talking about skydiving. Life is sweet. -
Can you jump higher than the plane ??
skydivejersey replied to lazyfrog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Even the worlds top high jumpers can only get like 8 / 9 ft. I've been on planes at 16,000ft and that the ones we jump out of. I am then happy to conceed thay my jumping abilities are far and away exceeded by any plane. Case closed.
