  1. Have you tried explaining why you feel that way when someone refuses to use a cypres? I have issues about using seatbelts in the back of a car that are in a way probably similar to yours, but in the end you have to let people decide for themselves. Still, the decision of this jumper does not sound like an informed one. If she listens to your personal reasons, plus all the facts people have suggested you present to her, and still chooses to jump without a cypres, then there's nothing more you can do (other than hope she'll change her mind), harsh as that may sound.

quade started the thread i believe.... his version had better timing IMO.. And here it is!! I believe we have a winner; Congratulations Lawrocket!
  3. What I'm curious about (if I may add to your question) is exactly how much difference (if any) this makes compared to other harnesses the pros use.

I think there was some betting going on a while back on when (how many days before christmas) someone will post this joke in talkback. I can't find that thread now, but I wonder who won.
  5. I think your roots are showing! Time for another bleach job. j/k Nice dog!
  6. What kind of seatbelts are used in that plane? I thought seatbelts are usuallly long enough for most people to put around their midsection, not hang 2' below the plane from it. I bet that guy got some interesting footage on his camera as well.
  7. Oh. So you're still a dog, then?
  8. I found this pic in the classifieds...I always thought he was this big, smiling dog. It's funny how closely avatars become associated with people you've never met...
  9. I think along the same lines. (Check my profile to see exactly what I mean) But I'd be extremely wary of giving this sort of advice (actually, with my numbers, most any sort of advice) to someone I do not know and had not seen fly. (advice I feel competent enough to give) Chris, if you're comfortable on the canopy and your instructors think it's good for you- it probably is.
  10. Yup. Collapse it, pull it over the brakes, stow it and then unstow the brakes. You'll be fine as long as you're not careless and knock a brake out while you're pulling the slider down. This (along with untightening your chest strap) allows the canopy to spread out more and be a more efficient wing.
  11. It's a satire. Perhaps 'humorous comment' was not the best choice of word. Obviously.
  12. It does have its highpoints, yes. Overall, it's still oversimplyfying complex matters. But at least this story can be dismissed as a humorous comment (poor as it may seem to some). The guy who says all muslims hate westerners and want to build an islamic world can not.
  13. Well, hey, people do it most of the time; "It has nothing to do with the oil"/"It's about the oil" "They're just a bunch of yellow-bellied frog-eaters who only care about their economical interests" "They just want to kill all jews" "They all f+cking hate us" At least in Narcimund's case, it was pretty obvious it was a satire. Not that I found it extremely good, but at least I got the feeling the author didn't mean everything so dead serious (don't know him, so I might be wrong here, but you get my point)
  14. Well, 7pm Pacific time is 4am over here, so I'll be asleep. However, do I get an honorable mention on your list if I start drinking now? My views aside, I think it's nice that we can sometimes all agree that certain things are simply good.
  15. 0:2:1 0-somehow, I didn't feel like partying very hard this weekend. Will make it up soon. 2 jumps only, but one was from a balloon (and free,at that) and the other was the most relaxed I've ever been on a skydive (looks like autogenics training and meditation is paying off) 1 round of drinks bought for the balloon jump and for being reckless and making everyone on the ground worry for my life while I hummed it.
  16. How about years of torture, rape, and injustice like he imposed on his own citizens? I know people who were able to escape Iraq and get to the US. Find anyone from Iraq who left family there. They will give you the full accounts. Yes, don't get me wrong. I'm glad he was captured and feel he should definitely be punished. How and by whom is the question that might complicate things a bit.
  17. That is really cool! But what to do with him now? Fair trial? Staged trial to satisfy masses? Quick execution? 'Suicide' in captivity? Lifetime holiday pack in Cuba? This should be interesting...
  18. Well, you might need a lot of time and money for that. First, get a ticket to Italy. Milano or Venice (even better) preferrably). Then start travelling east. If you hit Austria, you're too far north. Soon you should come to Slovenia, a little country a lot of people have heard of, but fewer can locate. Get to its capital and call me up- I might be able to provide a cheap place to stay. Start helping out at our skydiving club- sacrifice free time, work for free and do whatever it takes to convince people you're a great guy. It may take up to a year before the opportunity arises again, but if you play it right, you'll be the first in line when free balloon jumps are available again. Still interested?
  19. At our base airfield (I could call it my dropzone, but it isn't exactly what you'd imagine under the term). Some balloonists took off from it with a bunch of panoramic flight passengers (4 balloons altogether). Somehow, our organizer talked them into taking a skydiver with them for free and I happened to be one of the few who hadn't jumped from a balloon yet.
  20. Bwahaha...that reply might have gotten me grounded instead of just warned.

Judging from that one, I'd say either the exposure was set for the upper part of the picture or the shutter speed was manually set too fast and aperture too small for the lower part to be exposed properly. If you're shooting on automatic, make sure the object you're trying to shoot is in the center (which is where cameras, unless set otherwise, measure light and adjust the exposure accordingly). If the center point of your composition is lighter or darker than the main object, try aiming at the object, depressing the shutter release halfway (or whatever you need to do for your camera to focus/adjust exposure) then, without releasing it, move the camera back so you have the composition you wanted in the viewfinder and shoot it. If you're setting things manually, just make sure you make up for the shorter exposure times with a bigger aperture. [edit]And don't worry about the pictures too much. Photoshop can work wonders.

Here...I took the liberty of enhancing it a bit (the light balance seemed a bit off). Hope I didn't butcher it too much...
  23. I think more emphasis should be put on learning to understand why other people/cultures think the way they do. However, properly teaching this (if a proper method even exists) is probably one of the hardest and most responsible jobs possible. A lot of people tend to make their own cultural background the basis of all understanding, which leads to oversimplification, skewed ideas of 'others' and some simply idiotic beliefs. Teaching about christianity is, imo, not as important in a western society as learning about other major religious cultural foundations, since kids are probably already exposed to it in some way or the other. Still, I have my doubts about the method mentioned in the original posts if it is really exactly like the description.
