Marijuana and Skydiving. Good, bad, indifferent?
jerry81 replied to BravestDog's topic in The Bonfire
Look, what we're trying to say here is that if you looked at all the people likely to jump/drive stoned, you'd find that a certain percentage of them can do so without endangering others in any way. But since the majority of them couldn't, saying it's generally a bad idea is more or less right. Saying it's outright stupid/insane... as many have done on this thread only tells me that people have a strong emotional basis for their opinions and probably won't allow them to change even a bit. -
I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer that (though my guess is that if we're talking code, there are more ways to represent a number in such a matrix). Anyway, you're thinking way too much. The solution of this puzzle will probably be a disappointment to you.

Okay, that was way too cheap. And the link to the certificate is not even up yet.

Right, from what I see, it seems that we have 3 words, 7,2 and 5 characters long, each letter represented with a 3x2 binary matrix (considering the dots are ones and empty spaces are zeroes) So the message looks like this; 10|11|11|10|10|10|10 01|10 10|10|10|10|11 01|00|10|10|01|11|01 11|01 10|01|00|11|01 00|11|10|10|10|10|00 10|10 10|00|00|10|10 First word begins and ends with the same letter, which also appears in the third word. Three letters appear twice. What does it say?

Marijuana and Skydiving. Good, bad, indifferent?
jerry81 replied to BravestDog's topic in The Bonfire
Actually, I always drive slower if I've had a drink or a smoke. Not because my brain would be turning so much slower (I guess I either don't fit your idea of a stoner or that idea itself has some holes in it), but because I'm aware that I'm not fully operational, however well I might feel. With the way I drive, you could hardly say that I'm a danger to others, but with my reaction time impaired, others might be a danger to me. Better to drive a bit slower and be very alert to everything happening around me than have one of the 'fast' drunk drivers crash into me because I didn't have time to dodge him. -

Last I heard, the guy was going to lose his license (hopefully his plane, too). He may already have, since its been a while, but on the other hand, since he's a person with some weight at that airfield (dropzones per se do not exist here) and probably has connections within the our aeronautic association, he might have gotten off somehow. I honestly hope he's permanently banned from flying anything bigger than a kite and that this will serve as a warning to other pilots. -

jerry81 replied to BravestDog's topic in The Bonfire
Over here, a few months ago an extremely drunk pilot stalled an An-2 just before jump run (those planes are extremely stable and can almost stop in the air before they stop flying). They tumbled from 9000 to about 5000 before he got it under control. I'm really glad most pilots in the states are so great and responsible, but let's not forget some may have different experiences than you, ok? A lot of the pilots that fly us are just making some extra money and do not perceive themselves as DZ pilots (or think very highly of skydivers, for that matter). They also don't seem to have any problems getting into the plane after a few drinks. Sucks, but I'm sure this is not the only place where skydiving operations are run this way. -
Marijuana and Skydiving. Good, bad, indifferent?
jerry81 replied to BravestDog's topic in The Bonfire
No, but I do know very well that level of impairment caused by pot can vary greatly according to quality of marijuana, amount smoked, personality of the smoker...Some people are perfectly capable of being on top of the high, however, most aren't, which is why "Pot doesn't mix well with skydiving" is generally a good advice. -

jerry81 replied to BravestDog's topic in The Bonfire
Well, I have enough first-hand experience both with the effects of pot and with people who are stoned to know that generalizations don't always apply. For instance; a person's reaction time on pot might be slower, but it might still be faster than the reaction time of another skydiver who never tokes. Also, adrenalin is a great override for the buzz. So I wouldn't have a problem jumping with a person who's stoned, as long as I didn't have a problem with how they behaved when they were high. In general, though, if an unknown skydiver came up to me smelling of pot and asked to jump with me, I would probably say no. As for pilots, it again depends on how well I knew the pilot in question. But in my experience, with pilots, alcohol is a much bigger problem than weed. -
And here I am, feeling as if I suddenly became very popular as the new mail tone rings out every two minutes. Guys, just in case anyone needs to be warned, don't open weird attachments. This one comes in the form of a .pif file, with some sort of error message (undelivered mail, unreadable charcters...) More here.

Potentially dangerous situation in thick cloud - any advice?
jerry81 replied to Peej's topic in Safety and Training
Okay, now that we've determined that jumping through thick clouds is not that smart... Did you ever check the air above you when you came out of the cloud or at least before you pulled? I would definitely roll over/look up a)before going flat from the sit, to prevent corking into the person above and b)before pulling, because I'd rather be open a few hundred feet lower than risk (however small the chances may be) having someone above me when I pull. -
The immortal guy would be Dorian Gray (Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde). Allan Quatermain seems to be a fictional character as well, according to this page that Google spat out. BTW, the guy who found Livingston was named Henry Stanley, and he was real.

licenced jumpers who signed some of my jumps
jerry81 replied to chuteless's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wow, I'm pretty sure some of those names in your logbooks could be found in the Bible as well... (absolutely no offense meant...you're a legend, Bill. All in good humor. -
Although the Beagle 2 is still lost and Spirit is still having problems, the Mars Express sent back some really impressive high-res pictures as well some really impressive data. Things are getting quite interesting up there, let's hope the Opportunity landing goes well tomorrow... http://www.esa.int/export/SPECIALS/Mars_Express/ Report from yesterday's press conference:

I laughed out loud at that. Does that mean I'm weird?

You know, if I remember correctly, that was actually one of the 'theme songs' at the Mondial in Gap.

I think you're confusing the Onyx guided parachute system with the quad-cell Onyx canopy...
-
Oh, go post on Blinc or something...

Is that, like, a tiny badger, by any chance?
-
Wow! Did you do that on purpose? I think he was only kidding about that 'most reposted link' stuff...

More opinions on the Demon, anyone?
jerry81 replied to jerry81's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
No, Stane only makes the Contrail, Spark and Quick for Performance Variable. The Demon and Cayenne are made elsewhere. I think I read somewhere (here on dz.com) that it's some off-shore outsourcing production, which would explain the current dirt cheap prices, considering the $ to € rates at the moment. -
More opinions on the Demon, anyone?
jerry81 replied to jerry81's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Only if you can catch me...I asked for a 130. I'm really curious how it flies compared to your CobaltComp. And I think I'll make more than just one full altitude hop&pop with that canopy...frostbite, here I come! -
More opinions on the Demon, anyone?
jerry81 replied to jerry81's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Just a quick update; I called up PV today and arranged so that they'll send a demo for me directly to Stane. So, yes, Demons are being demoed in Europe, apparently both by PV and some of their dealers. I feel a bit like a fool now. If I had called them on monday instead of waiting for them to answer my email (sent via form on their page, perhaps it's not even working properly) I might be flying the canopy this weekend already.
