Do you think people should have the right to go to war? You're either for people to have the right to defend their country (pro-war) or you're against it (anti-war). If you're pro-war, why not just invade any country that looks at you a bit sideways? After all you don't see anything wrong with bombing people, it's just a procedure, like trade sanctions.

Although... Fern Britton. You're gonna need a shit load of chocolate. And a berth at sea world.

That's genius.

Natasha, yeah. Julie, meh. Personally, Fiona Bruce and Katie Derham.

Certificate of Deposit. Fixed term, fixed interest, savings bond.

I'd get the bus. Heathrow is a right ball ache to get in and out of.

I think you have misunderstood what is meant by natural selection (the inclusion of the word natural makes it a bit of a misnomer in this case).
-
No but natural selection is the driving force behind what people call the process of evolution, and natural selection is being nullified by modern medicine and modern society. It could be argued that genetically weaker individuals (however you want to define the term) are not selected out as they would naturally have been. The point that the OP linked to, and Quade's take on it, are valid.

I wouldn't worry too much. I rebuilt a 1936 MG PB for a guy and we bought a complete new body for it, and they only made 526 PB's. If it's just a door skin, a good specialist should be able to reskin it easily.

Science is not like stamp collecting, they don't just collect data, they interpret it too. But neither would science jump to conclusions like the blog article did. NASA would not make the statement "if temperatures rise then factors other than solar activity are driving climate trends, if not then the greenhouse gas theory is falsified" because it is a gross oversimplification and as such it is plain wrong.

Really? I see the opposite. Edit cos airdvr has a good point..

The "Bailout" - Do You Support the $700B - $1.1Tr Package
JackC replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
I think the fact that the banks have restructured their debt over and over using ever more complex instruments is part of the reason we are in this mess. Ironically, these hedging methods are part of the reason why the western world has enjoyed such sustained economic growth in recent years. But banks, insurance companies, hedge funds and the like are so intertwined with the economy and society in general that they can't be allowed to fail en mass to the extent that the financial industry is essentially underwritten by government. I don't like bailouts, I really don't, and I think it just sweeps the problem under the carpet and it will probably come back to haunt us, but I can see why it happens. Hopefully, it will give the financial markets and the economy enough breathing room to stabilise before the next shit storm hits. But I have a feeling that the next shit storm isn't far away. -
What's your project? If you don't mind me asking.

Boy, that sucks. I know what it's like, I worked on the Beagle 2 project for a while. That went well. Now I'm in theoretical physics, the worst I can do is break my pencil.
-
Oh man... I miss that stuff. I should have never left.

Are you sure about that? It seems to me that it's virtually impossible to get elected in the US unless you are christian. http://www.adherents.com/adh_presidents.html http://www.adherents.com/adh_congress.html

Yeah, you can. If you believe in god you're a theist, everyone else is an atheist.

The laws of physics are the same for all observers. Reality does not depend on opinion.

To help avoid delusions. I think that's a fairly good reason.

So you're trying to paint the shades inbetween....braavo. It wasn't me. They did it.

Call yourself whatever you want mate. If skeptic fits you, great.
-
While Atheism does include those who believe there is no god, it also includes those who place no faith in god or find the concept of god to hold no meaning. If you do not actively believe in a god (whatever else you may or may not believe) you are an atheist. Agnostics may be atheist or theist. They may believe (or disbelieve) in god and still think the evidence in not known or unknowable.
-
Define God? I consider myself atheist specifically because God is an incoherent and ill-defined concept, it's essentially meaningless. Belief or disbelief in something that has no meaning seems rather pointless to me and is a source of much bemusement. You say you believe in some sort of "magic" that constitutes matter. But do you know what that magic is, how it does it's thing or what properties it has? If you don't then I have to wonder, do you even know what you believe?
-
Not really. If you don't believe in a god of some sort, you're an atheist. A-theism=without god. That's all there is to it.
