  1. Rig the toggle (set the brake) like you would for a top ring. The third riser doesn't take any load, it is just there to make sure your toggle doesn't go bye-bye if you let it go. The bottom of the string or tape can be sewn to your mains. Imagine the line mod on a slider down base rig, but with a keeper for your toggle. Some dacron line is easy to fingertrap around a set of metal guide rings... As an aside, years ago I had a buddy who rigged up a pair of triple risers on his Sabre 150 neglecting to run the brake lines through the slider and made about 30 jumps with it. Every opening was super hard, but no line overs. Ended up getting shoulder surgery.
  2. I don't know about you, but I wasn't an instant expert when I started instructing... Since he asked, I'll help. Imagine the noise your student would make if they jumped up and landed on a wood floor. That's their mass. If its louder than the noise you make, they'll go fast. Seems to work for me. Make a habit of asking their weight, after you guess. It is a skill that can be learned and may offer a career opportunity at an amusement park someday. Skinny people can be tricky, if they are flexible and have low body fat, they can fall surprisingly fast. You'll figure it out.
  3. I haven't bought a new suit in 15 years. I just grab mine from vid 666's box of used jumpsuits. They are all real gross and have holes in them. I don't use booties, they are most useful for sliding out landings. If I get a real flyweight, I just grab a big baggy seventies Brand X thing off the student rack and rock it out. Don't think too much, it makes your head hurt.
  4. The easiest way to fix that problem is to find a real old ZP canopy like a Sabre or even better, a Monarch. If it has way out of trim 550's, even better still. Deploy one of those at terminal a bunch of times. You'll love your openings on your Pilot.
  5. You're just Mental. That's okay, a lot of students are. You know what to do, but you can't make your body do it. There's no magic solution to that, you just have to figure it out for yourself. I had a buddy get stuck on Level 3 (Cat C) for nine jumps. No shit. He got motivated and figured it out when an Instructor told him to take up golf. As long as you are enjoying yourself at the DZ and people like you, you'll get on fine. Good Luck!
  6. That was awesome. Especially the first one. I would have shat my pants when I saw that line of trees coming up and I was still trucking...
  7. I packed two of these sleeved Strongs for likestojump a few months back. They were super easy! It is also interesting to note that the C-9 pilot rigs I have packed were deployed Type 1. Wonder how that feels at terminal or more. As far as BASE round packing, I've done the NRG bridge with PH 24's type 3 and type 1, with and without the rubber band. I settled on type 1 with no rubber band and have done 5 seconds no problem.
  8. I did say it may be a little off topic.
  9. This may be off topic, but I think the root cause of a lot of these incidents is that gear is designed more with fashion in mind rather than functionality. That is, the market wants really tiny containers and the manufacturers respond by selling containers that fit tightly and are difficult to pack correctly. There is no good reason your rig needs to be narrower than the widest part of your back and shorter than your hips. Buy a container that spreads the bulk out over your back and you will have a nice, soft container that is easy to pack.

    AFF - handycam

Finally mounted up my ParaGear chest strap mount. GoPro2 on 1080 Wide. 720 or WVGA has a wider FOV on the 3, I'll have to experiment with the 2... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEwKLku_9EA Not too comfortable in the AC if the person in front is squishing you, but it feels good not having it on my head...

Item: L12650 there is a 1" mount as well. Be aware that if you have a thick chest strap you may need to have the folded ends disassembled to get it mounted. The slots for the strap are very thin. Some assembly required...

I've been using my gopro3 mounted on the front of my helmet. The 3 is pretty low profile and I have a thin helmet that keeps it close to my head, but I am probably still going to kill myself. Since video on a student jump is extremely beneficial to the learning process I will try out the 1 3/4" chest strap mount that Para Gear sells. That should get a decent shot and be as snag free as you can get. I'll let you know how it works.
  13. Who has the fastest 182? What engine and prop combination works best? Wing extensions and spoilers/speed brakes; worth it?
  14. There is a difference between mental fear and physical fear. Mental fear happens in your head and is perfectly normal. You are afraid of bouncing and getting mangled, that's normal and good. It keeps you safe. Think of it as your friend. Physical fear is when your mental fear gets out of control and makes you all panicky and out of control. You need to conquer this as it inhibits performance and may cause things to not end well for you. You can get used to almost anything if you do it a lot, you just have to want it.
  15. Let's say I was a jumpsuit manufacturer who realized that I had all the equipment and skill necessary to sew up a main parachute, but I wasn't a rigger. I could legally build them and sell them. But the user would not be able to get them relined by anyone other than a Master Parachute Rigger certificate holder. I, the manufacturer, couldn't even repair my own product. I wonder if that ever happened.
  16. Part of the reason experienced jumpers act like such arrogant assholes is that they are arrogant assholes. The other part is that it is very frustrating when someone comes along and tries out skydiving for a few years and in the process burns in and brings about a more restrictive environment for those of us who have been at it our entire adult lives. We worked hard to figure out the dangerous shit and don't want to give up the secrets to someone who will use these powers unwisely.
  17. Why should any of us give a shit what tandem students think about our language? Honest question. They came to us, it's their job to fit in. It used to be, becoming a skydiver was like joining a motorcycle gang. If you could fit in and hang with the crowd, you made a great bunch of friends and a place where you could relax and let your hair down. Since when did the DZ turn into Fucking Disneyworld?
  18. Dave Lepka's Kung Fu is stronger than your Kung Fu. He will rape your fields and pillage your women. Just. Walk. Away...
  19. Sorry if I come off as a jerk on the internet. In real life, I'm actually a dick.
  20. The half of your personality that is over confident needs to Facepunch the other half that is rational. That way you could just go ahead and buy what the cool kids are jumping and fit in with the crowd irregardless of whether or not you have the ability to fly it safely. Oops... That probably sounded patronizing.
  21. I would now like to personally thank PD for being responsible enough to at least attempt to prevent some dickhead from buying something way over his or her head and killing me with it. I think I wrote that right.
  22. Skydiving is a social activity. If you don't want to be THAT guy, don't pick your nose, buy beer every now and then and have a good sense of humor.
  23. The smartest thing I ever did was to stop trying to make a living skydiving. I fly airplanes for a living instead. I jump for fun. I love to teach and all the money I make pays for my fun jumps, equipment and my wife's jumps. I have a self supporting hobby. I don't worry about all the DZ politics, I just show up and do a good job. The rest takes care of itself. Plus, I don't live in a house with wheels anymore. Flying is fun, so it really doesn't feel like work and the pay isn't bad for a guy who only has a high school edjucation.
