  1. >>I am 200 w/o gear and feel great an my new safire 209. On reason I wont go smaller is the change would force me to a smaller reserve and I am already very wary of having a 176 f-111 7 cell over my head in a bad situation.
  2. You could also go to PD's website. www.performancedesigns.com click on Products, then Slinks Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  3. I put about 30 jumps on the demo Sabre 2 190 I had, loaded 1.32:1. Most of them were in fairly windy conditions where other jumpers were complaining that it was "really bumpy". I found the Sabre 2 to be very stable. I liked it so much I ordered one. Scheduled to be delivered on Jan. 10. Woohoo!! Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." 4. 503. My first jump was July 18, 1999. Not too bad for only jumping six months a year. Now I have enough for my tandem rating. I just have to wait for my three year anniversary. I also have to get some clarification on the cutaway requirement. Do you think it counts if you cut away after the reserve was already out and fully inflated???? 5. I ordered my Sabre 2 on Halloween! Score one for PD's demo program. I hated sending the demo back, I might have asked to buy it if it wasn't butt ugly. Do they purposely pick bad colors for the demos to make sure they get them back??? Delivery time is pretty long (Jan 10), but there's not too much jumping to be done in western NY in the winter time anyway. At least I'll have it for my trip to Perris/Elsinore/Eloy in February. I think I'll keep my user name as a tribute to my first canopy, it was very good to me. Oh yeah, I made my 500th this weekend! I guess that makes my weekend ratio 0:8:1. Gotta do something about that 0. :-) Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  6. I've never used my Pro Track with a Pro Tec, but I used to use one with a hockey helmet. That Pro Track is somewhere in the desert of Arizona now. I had it mounted on the outside of the helmet with the clip that comes with the Pro Track, until I got slapped in the head by my risers on opening. I could hear it fine though, so I don't think you'd have any problems using one with a Pro Tec. I would strongly advise against mounting it on the outside of the helmet though. :-) Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  7. Whew, the door has been opened for me to ask a question that has been mystifying me (and probably most other guys) for years. If Andrea's theory is correct, why doesn't this girl just ask him out if she's interested??? It almost always ends up being the guy's responsibility to do the asking. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  8. Well, I haven't had a cutaway yet (knock on wood), but I jump Type 8 risers with large rings. I believe one of the Jump Shack articles recommends Type 8 risers for jumpers over 200 lbs. I'm about 250 out the door, so Type 8 seemed like the way to go. The other thing I found is that I have a harder time getting a decent grip on Type 17 risers when making riser turns or hanging on em to get back from a long spot. But I only made 30 jumps on the demo canopy with the small risers, so maybe I'd get used to it. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  9. I feel your pain man. I also have something of a shyness problem myself when it comes to women. But I have to agree with the other replies, just ask her out. I wish I hadn't passed up so many possible opportunities when I was younger. Not that I'm old now (turned 30 yesterday), but I rarely meet interesting single women these days. I really wish there were more single female jumpers at my DZ. Oh well, they say love comes along when you least expect it. It just seems like I haven't been expecting it for an awfully long time. :-) Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  10. Somebody sent this into Mototcyclist magazine last year. It applies directly to most jumpers I know. The Credo Of Jack London I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dryrot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The purpose of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. -- Jack London Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  11. Of course you lost your keys. You didn't have any pockets. Well, none you'd want to put a set of keys in anyway. :-) Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  12. Hi Karina. As you can probably guess from my username, I jump a Spectre(210) loaded about 1.2:1. I'm currently demoing a Sabre 2 190(1.33:1), I've put 16 jumps on it so far and I love it. The openings are smooth, slightly faster than my Spectre. It is much more responsive to toggle and riser inputs, and the flare power is amazing. On my first jump I started to flare it the same as my Spectre and got several feet of lift, so watch yourself. I haven't gotten to test the glide much 'cause the uppers were really crankin', but based on the lift it provides near the ground I think it will be great for making it back from long spots. I hope to put a bunch more jumps on the demo this weekend, and order one for myself over the winter. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  13. I'm planning on selling my canopy and I'm trying to decide on a fair price. It's a Spectre 210, it will have about 450 jumps on it when I sell it. I've heard some people say subtract a dollar per jump from the original price, but I thought that was for F111 canopies. Besides, I can't remember what I originally paid. :-) BTW, this is not an ad, just looking for info. Thanks. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  14. I've got the USPA logo on my right arm. Just like the sticker they send you with licenses, etc. A lot of whuffos think it's an airborne tattoo, so there's usually some explaining to be done. I figure I'm covered if anybody ever tries to convince me to quit jumping: "I can't quit, I've got the tattoo." :-) Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  15. It's not actually a statistic, but 50-300 jumps is what I've heard most. This is usually the time when your confidence is increasing faster than your skills. Looking back I can think of a few times in that range where I did something I was lucky to come through unscathed. A friend of mine at the DZ has a great saying: you have two buckets, your luck bucket and your skill bucket. When you start jumping the luck bucket is full, and the skill bucket is empty. The goal is to make sure the skill bucket is pretty full before you empty the luck bucket. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  16. Wow. I can't believe somebody from the forums actually came and made a jump at my home DZ. If I'd known you were there I'd have introduced myself. Pretty cool place to jump, eh? Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  17. I can't update my DZ either. What gives?? I also can't access the DZ reviews. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH Edited by Spectrejumper on 7/12/01 08:06 PM.
  18. I wear my RW suit when I sitfly. I have about 50 sit jumps, and it works just fine. Except when the velcro at my ankles comes open, but even that isn't a real big deal. I'm attracted to the pants mostly for comfort, but I'm used to wearing a suit so it wouldn't be that big a deal. The cash factor isn't really an issue, my current job pays much better than my old one. I'm just wondering which is better for learning head down. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  19. Hey gang. I'm planning on working on head down this season, and I don't think my RW suit is the best choice. Soooo, do you think I'll be better off with freefly pants, or a freefly suit?? I'm leaning toward the pants, but I wanted to get the opinion of some freefliers. Thanks. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  20. My understanding is the severity of the turn is what defines a hook turn. A carving turn would look like a gentle arc if you drew it on paper, a hook turn would look like...a hook. Hook turns can be done with front riser or toggles. A poorly executed riser hook is easier to recover from than a toggle hook. 21. Nothin' wrong with a little self-promotion when you do good work. Great job on the article. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  22. There are a couple of things you can't do with a pullout. One that comes to mind is flying a winged suit. Why not? Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  23. We have one of those signs at my DZ. We call it the "whack the whuffo" sign. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  24. OK, I'll admit it. I'm the one person who responded to the poll that didn't hang on to the ripcord. You can see it in my video...I pull the ripcord, hang on to it for a couple seconds, then let it go. Doh! The case of beer was in the fridge before sundown. Mike D-23312 "It's such a shame to spend your time away like this...existing." JMH
  25. Well, I bought my "dream rig" as my first rig:Javelin J5, Spectre 210, Raven-M 249. I had 60 jumps when I bought it. So far I've put 210 jumps on it, and I wouldn't change a thing, although I have no experience with the reserve yet.(knock on wood) :-) Another post talked about pin protection on Javelins, but I've never had any problems. The only "problem" I had was the Spectre opened too slow for my taste. After a couple e-mails to PD I had a new slider and the problem was solved. No charge for the new slider, BTW. Bottom line: demo some gear and buy what you are comfortable with now, not what you think you'll be ready for in another 30 jumps.
