  1. Thanks, that is a good price. These earplugs have been discussed before, but not given the attention I think they deserve, being so uniquely low profile. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  2. http://www.surefire.com/EP3-Sonic-Defenders ParaGear and many other retailers also sell them, but paraGear only has them in med and large size (surprisingly, small was best for me). The size refers to the height of the ear conch/depression that the outer ring fits. http://www.paragear.com/templates/parachutes.asp?group=479&level=2&parent=203 There are many types of similar products (filter out above 85db or so damaging noise) but this one is unique in that it is very low profile. It does not stick out hardly at all, so you can actually wear a helmet with an audible pressing against your ear. Perhaps there are other similar products, but I haven't encountered any that are such a low profile. You can also put in the little 'plug' insert into the hole to override the filter and make them even quieter if desired. For many years I've worn squishy foam earplugs. I can concentrate so much better without such a deafening noise, but I also want to be able to hear others under canopy, etc. So, these seem like a great alternative. I haven't tried them in action, but they feel very comfortable with a helmet. I can also put them in while gearing up, and still be able to hear people during final dirt dives, without the need to hassle with earplugs on the way to or inside the plane. 3. So, the extra thickness of the reserve slink is enough extra bulk to keep it from pulling through. I'd like to use what I have instead of pay $30 or so for the reserve slinks, certainly someone can suggest a way to add bulk in a way that is sensible/easy/won't cause damage. I'm sure some will immediately say that it is stupid to consider, but tough shit to them nervous nannies. So, if you have any ideas, please offer. 4. Thanks for clarifying that. It wasn't clear from the pic or your description if the pin was also bent. If it was only the swaged area, I'd keep it as long as there weren't any cracks. I would think that area is supposed to be relatively ductile, perhaps others can confirm that conclusion. As a mechanical design engineer, it really pisses me off that the std pins are so weak. We deserve better. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 5. Is it the pin or the swaged area (larger dia) where it is bent? The problem with ripcord pins is more than what that SB addressed. They are just generally not very strong, even those that meet the test std are not able to withstand what they should, in my opinion. You are somewhat likely to replace it with an equally 'not strong enough' ripcord. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't replace it, but don't think you're actually sure to be preventing it from happening again. 10. Being able to stay very close as the 'student' continually turns may be required. A fast "orbit" like that isn't easy for those that haven't done lots of RW. 11. That is very strange about such an extra fee for what should be a std face. Attached is a pic of what a glow in the dark face looks like at night vs day For those thinking that an analog takes longer to 'read' than a digital, that may be due to caring about the 'detail' of whether you are at 9k or 7k etc. If all you really care about is your proximity to break off altitude and your hard deck, then a custom face with only those indicators actually makes a lot of sense, and would prevent your brain from bothering to spend any extra time evaluating unnecessary detail. I think I might consider a custom face to do just that. Some custom faces from the alti website that to some degree accomplish that are also attached. 12. The thread title should be "a bit disappointed with a rigger giving me bad info" No reason to put this on UPT, unless they did actually do the mod to the rig you saw, and you don't really know who did that work, do you? 13. How is the 3rd canopy attached to the main risers? I had thought there would just be another set of risers attached to the large harness ring - side by side risers independently released with separate handles, but that would not explain the description of the 3 canopy pulling the regular main out. 15. " ...................................................................... I saw reinforced mini-risers at the 1993 PIA Symposium. In 1998, Bill booth published the definitive standard on how to manufacture reinforced mini-risers. Anyone who is still jumping (13-15 year old) non-reinforced mini-risers is ..... I am not allowed to use that much profanity in public .................... The reinforced risers still break, and they don't have to be so well used to break. The inventor thinks that having the risers be the weak link to limit loads in hard openings is a good feature, and I agree. Many modern cars have force limiters in the seatbelts (they don't break however, they just stretch out further). A problem with that load limiter/breaking feature for risers is when you have a one sided RSL. 17. These first 2 ads don't give much detail, but are worth checking out, the third is simply overpriced and should have a realistic offer made for it (less than $100 IMO): http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=105218;d=1 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=99265;d=1 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=102650;d=1 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 18. You repeated yourself...'prevented vs avoided' Anyway, so you discount BB's advice because he has a business interest involved. That is really an insult to him, and says very poor things about you. I can agree with Sherman about the problems of one-sided RSLs without having to agree with his solution or claim that he's making those assertions because of business interests. That is really crappy of you. People will honestly, and with integrity, disagree on such matters because the answer isn't as clear cut as you describe it. 19. Be patient, they will be there. I waited a week and found a nearly new one in just the color I wanted. I check the new ads regularly, and they come up all the time. Even if somebody doesn't list their alti for $100 or less, offer them that much anyway because I think that a new alti II galaxy goes for $145 now, so they should not sell for more than $100. 20. That's a good list (especially #2 & 4). I'm not so concerned about stability before using my reserve as both of my canopies are large, and I've always pulled immediately after cutting away. I am not concerned about my ability to pull my reserve, but I do however want to have the option to delay without fumbling for to pull on a little red tab. I realize that given the experience of skydivers on the whole, that I'm more likely to fail at pulling reserve than face a situation where I'd wish I didn't have one. I'm OK with that trade-off, as I'd rather fail myself at pulling my own reserve than have the misfortune of one of the other scenarios do me in, and of course I have great confidence at my own ability to pull my metal handle. I also have the std (large) 3 rings to help make the cutaway easy with the one hand on each handle method. I'd add to Wendy's list that the RSL shackle is a snag hazard, and scenarios of a main departing past a reserve will put that snag hazard into play. Also an RSL can and has been involved with a premature deployment while exiting. I know it is a trade-off of risks. I just put a weighting factor on the different aspects that is different than others. That sort of trade is done in many ways, such as the choice to jump high wingloading (and swoop), which I consider much more dangerous than the choice for an experienced jumper to go without RSL. 21. Even more important, is that twisted steering lines will eventually cause a malfunction due to knots that eventually develop. Even before it gets twisted enough to make a knot, it likely would add extra friction that could keep the slider partially up. 22. That is simply not correct. Even Bill Booth has expressed his dissatisfaction with the conventional RSL, and not just because it didn't extract the reserve. There are other reasons to not want an RSL. It is a trade-off of trusting your ability to pull the reserve, and not wanting to have it pulled for you at what may be the wrong time. There are many scenarios where that may happen. I do not encourage newbies to disconnect their RSL, but please don't assert that camera and CRW are the only valid reasons to not want one. 24. That sounds better than punching a hole. I still wonder what effect it has on the strength, as it would make sense that the yarns that have been pushed aside are going to be under greater stress and will fail before the rest of the webbing. Without more background/testing/field experience, it seems like a bad idea that could have been avoided. 25. It doesn't seem like a good idea to have a hole put in the riser so that the snap can be installed. Seems better to sew another layer of fabric on top of the riser to allow the installataion of the snap.
