a few helmet questions (Benny & Ozone in particular)
sundevil777 replied to mixedup's topic in Gear and Rigging
You don't have to use tape to hold in an audible. It can be done more elegantly than that, such as a sewn pouch, or with cut-out foam or something like that. The foam in the ear of my Pro-tec was great at securely holding an audible, but I don't know exactly how the Benny is. The Pro-tec is still much cheaper, perhaps the Benny has some advantage over it that I don't appreciate. If you want to save your hearing, don't figure on the helmet doing it. Two Stong Pop Top rigging errors I'd never seen

That of course makes sense. So, you're saying that somebody would actually put ALL the excess fabric/mesh into the middle - into the bottom? That seems obviously stupid, I figured just a bit of excess might be inserted there. Manual tranny column shifters allow 3 across seating. Of course it is possible to have someone in the middle and still use a floor shifter, but car mfgs will not acknowledge it - I don't think they'd make a bench seat with a floor shift. I've driven many, many cars with manual trans, and it is fun when driving aggressively in a car worth driving aggressively. I've never owned a car with a manual trans though - just want to get around easily in a basic way without racing around. the use of the clutch and shifter on a motorcycle seems like no burden at all compared to a car. Many modern cars will get better highway gas mileage with an auto tranny because the mfgs put slightly taller gearing on the auto vs manual. I don't understand why a stick is attractive for a non-sports car daily driver. Two Stong Pop Top rigging errors I'd never seen
sundevil777 replied to councilman24's topic in Gear and Rigging
How can mesh or fabric not be under the spring? Being under it doesn't mean it is pushed into it from below, but even if some is pushed into the bottom, I don't see how that would lockup the whole thing. I guess it is just hard to visualize as I haven't had the opportunity to try such things. Best Short Runway Jump Plane
sundevil777 replied to DontfallOff's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Is that for Porters with the crummy or no step? I remember being able to get 4 completely out, all standing easily on the huge step that was so far below the door edge. It was so far below the door, that I can't imagine the wing being a problem. I thought such a porch of a step was std for Poters used as jump planes, but was so surprised to see it was not. You could have a family reunion on the porch of Kapowsin's Porter. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. This is a great plane with a huge door. Launching big chunks from it was never a problem. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Technoavia_smg-92_turbo_finist_ha-ydf_at_kemble_arp.jpg I wonder if there are a lot of these available, and if they are legal to fly in the US? Best Short Runway Jump Plane
sundevil777 replied to DontfallOff's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Teams don't like them because they are right side exit, so their practice jumps don't correlate as well to what they will have to do in competition, correct? I jumped one at Kapowsin for quite a while. It had a bench on the left side that made it not as bad for crowding as it is without a bench (still more uncomfortable than a Caravan, etc.) and it had a massive-huge step lower than the door that made launching an 8 way easy. That porch like step and low exit speed are really great for weekend warrior fun jumpers. They are not at all easy to move about in them, so I can see how tandem isn't so convenient, but AFF should be really easy - assuming a huge step like Kapowsiin's had. I did jump one that had a tiny step that wasn't much lower than the door, that sucked. Quite right! I hold onto them because it is a matter of pride to have them after a mal, and I don't want them to interfere with the reserve deployment - let them go and that is just what they might do. Perhaps the guy wanted to check out how hard a no flare landing would be. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. ........................................................................ I used to roll-pack my Strato-Cloud and first-generation Strong Tandem mains, but the only canopies I still "roll pack" are Strong Tandem reserves. You have to "roll pack" Strong Tandem reserves to hide the nose, delay cell inflation and soften the openings. If you have ever opened a tandem reserve at "tandem terminal you will understand why! I also used to roll (some called it "flop") pack everything, then adapted the "factory pack" technique to do what a pro pack does. Very interesting about roll packing the reserve. Do you just roll/flop the nose half toward the middle, or do you also roll/flop the tail in the same way. It always seemed like a bad idea to flop the tail, and I would limit the "flops" to the nose and tail by S-folding it instead of just flopping. Not sure I'd like a reserve to be flopped toward the middle a bunch that way. when an extension is used, then that should be no more of an issue as burns resulting from putting it in the bag in a conventional way. I don't see how a person would put in 2 twists. Even if someone rotates the bag the wrong way, it would result in 1 twist. I quickly go used to it, and rotating it the wrong direction is not something I think I could ever do. Even though I think I will not ever do it, 1 twist should be no big deal. I don't understand this comment, as the larger canopies being harder to handle is a big part of why the psycho pack is a benefit. A football or whatever mess type of material distribution you want to call it is I think more likely when it is harder to get in the bag. I really don't understand this comment. I realize that many people make it look so easy to get a canopy in the bag in a conventional manner, but speaking as a veteran jumper, but new to ZP, I tried and tried to copy what I saw in person and in packing videos showing all the tricks, but it definitely was not easy to pick up the technique. The differences needed to use the psycho method were extremely simple for this old dog to learn. Of course the "mess" usually happens when you try to get it in the bag. After 30 years of jumping non-Zero Porosity canopies, I really just hated packing when I finally got a modern canopy...then I tried the psycho pack (precision calls it the "precision pack"): http://www.precision.aero/omega_pack.htm You should get a simple extension to your bridle about a foot long if you're going to regularly do the psycho pack. Many will say that the psycho pack technique is being lazy, and that there is no reason why you can't learn the tips/techniques needed to get it in the bag easily, but I don't care. I just don't see the downside of psychopacking, it is so wonderfully easy, and openings do not suffer. If anything I think it possible that openings are likely to be more consistent as I can better control the slider compared to the struggle of putting it in the bag otherwise. A search on the term "psycho pack" will reveal a lot of discussion. Flat packing is a very general term, that can be used to mean a "roll" pack technique (generally very much out of favor now, but it did work), or something that is actually very much like what is used by many to pack reserves, and is much like a pro pack except done a different way - that used to be called a "factory pack". Without packing tabs, and with ZP fabric, it is much more difficult compared to pro packing. It's great that you want to help. but if you know you don't know the answers, then you shouldn't offer answers anyway. I've never heard of that technique, perhaps it is a good idea, but I suspect it has a a great potential to be a dangerous distraction. Where did you pick up this idea? No, this is not a good technique. It may work OK if you are so weak that you can't actually "punch down" fast, but otherwise it is bad advice. Fortunately, really large student canopies can be tolerant of such poor technique. I had 2 swift plus landings, it had a fairly steep glide but the flare was great, really easy stand up at about 1.15 WL. Of course even if someone isn't shy about using a 20 year old reserve, it might be difficult to get riggers to pack it. Simple question for the lawyers here
sundevil777 replied to TrophyHusband's topic in Speakers Corner
Could be worse, I could be one of the people that doesn't have a clue about basics of government and therefore has to rely on the opinions of others to tell me what to think like some jackasses I know. Your answer implies that it is so easy to determine whether something is unconstitutional. Constitutional law courses are really a breeze, an easy A, right? To answer a question about whether one thinks something is unconstitutional, one must know much more than the words of the constitution. The totality of case law and how that precedent affects the interpretation is critical, and very complicated. It is the cutter. The fact that a cutter can fail and trap the loop. This act is "interferance with the normal operation of". Pass through cutters must be redesigned to allow the loop to release in case of "failure to cut" or we must find a way to get around this problem. That kind of redesign of the cutter may not be possible. However, the containers can have the placement changed rather easily, at least for most it seems that is true, but is it also possible to have the cutters placed in a location (out at the cap?) on a racer so that it would not lock? Of course we realize that cutter locations that allow lock also enable the quickest PC launch and tolerance of less than great rigging. Right now there is a mix of implementations. Perhaps someday all will agree to go in one direction, or all will be forced to go in one direction, so I'm wondering if the racer could adapt. It seems that would be more challenging for a racer. Vector 3 Packing Tips – or is my main just too big?
sundevil777 replied to skip's topic in Gear and Rigging
It looks like perhaps the 'bite' of your line stows are so long that they are extended way out to the side, making them hard to manage/tuck away. Perhaps that is the only problem, but if you would let us know the canopies you have and the container size spec, then we could help you figure it out (something you can also do on your own), using this handy aid: http://vos.uptvector.com/vos/v3sizing.html People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. What "should" my Argus say when it's "ready"?
sundevil777 replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Gear and Rigging
There are so many threads about AAD issues/problems, so much info very much available. How can you think it is not? So much info is available than when stupid threads and wild accusations against mods are posted, they get appropriately locked/deleted. That doesn't change the availability of what is still there. I'll take a stab at explaining why non-ZP fabric works for the bottom skin, regarding wing aerodynamics. When a wing is flying at high angles of attack (such as during a flared landing), it is very important that the airflow over the top of the wing stay "attached"/not separate from the surface of the wing. If air is leaking out through the top skin fabric too much, then I think it has the effect of separating the airflow. Conditions on the bottom skin of the wing are very different, with separation not being an issue, so leakage through non-ZP fabric doesn't matter. If it was possible to actually suck air into the wing through/from the top skin, then you get the ability to produce good lift at higher angles of attack, as the airflow stays attached when it otherwise would not. This has been done on some experimental airplanes, including a Boeing 757 testbed that had part of the wing drilled with very tiny holes and a vacuum applied to suck air into the wing. So, air leaking out through the fabric matters a lot for the top skin, but not for the bottom, as long as it is not so much that cell pressurization suffers, therefore I believe the decision to use ZP on the top skin has nothing to do with the durability of the fabric/ability to withstand stress. I remember reading from reliable sources that ZP fabric is more sensitive to small defects/tears - that if it does rip, or if a small defect or tear is highly stressed, then it is more likely to have a longer rip than non-ZP, so it is a good choice for reserves. So, that is my 'figuring from the engineering perspective. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Jumps/year to be worth buying used gear or new gear?
sundevil777 replied to mixedup's topic in Gear and Rigging
The cost of gear is not fixed, because the value of a new rig falls much faster per jump than a used rig per jump. The difference in the initial devaluation is quite significant, as it might be quite feasible to resell after 1 or 2 years a used rig at almost no change in price, or even sell for more than you paid, but that is completely unrealistic for a new rig. This assumes you haven't overpaid for either the new or used rig. If money is no problem for you, then you should spend freely and support the industry , if not, then decide on how much your budget is and be patient as you buy wisely with help from an experienced person you can trust (doesn't necessarily have to be a rigger, but have one handy for a final inspection). I get it now. You think that Israel has not reason to see its existence as threatened. For the first 777 flight, the pilots wore chutes. I believe that is SOP for first flights. My memory is that there was also a deflector plate that would be deployed to stick out into the airstream a bit to push a jumper down and out a bit. The 777 also had quite a high stabilizer, but I think they're more worried about being bashed into the body. I designed the flight deck switch panels, and so had the pleasure of talking to the crew ops/test pilots regularly.
