  2. I think this is not an accurate representation of what happened. There was a declaration of a winner because there was already a recount that was certified per the Florida law by the State Attorney General. The U.S Supreme Court ruled that the re-recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court was being conducted without any standard and re-instated the previous certification. Remember how the Fl court instructed the counties to try to determine the INTENT of the voter? The U.S. Supreme Court ruling gave the Florida Court the opportunity to explain/defend their ruling, which they did/could not do. This is what I remember, maybe others with more energy will provide more details. I think the Dem's were trying to steal the election, they felt that any tactic was OK because they felt the popular vote results justified their actions. 3. Actually, Fox News did mention it. I wonder how many other media sources covered this story? A search of CNN.com turns up nothing! 6. Do you remember all the newspapers that did their own recount of all the FL ballots? They had all the time in the world, and each newspaper could have their own people make their own judgement. Bush won Florida. I think the electoral college is a good thing. It keeps a small number of large population states and urban areas from having too much power. No matter how much of a landslide a candidate might have in LA and NY, if he wins a majority in many other small states, he wins. It wasn't the reason for setting up the electoral college in the first place, but I think this is a positive thing. Having the 2 houses of congress structured the way they are - one by state population, one with 2 senators each is similar in the way that power is distributed. I understand that it is annoying to be out of power. Republicans didn't like it either. 7. I know the difference between line dump and bag dump. Rubber bands will not always break. Bag locks can happen with them also. As I said, I will take the risk of a tube stow not breaking over a rubber band breaking and causing bag dump anyday. I am not the only one to conclude that this tradeoff is a good one. 8. ...and rubber bands can easily break causing bag dump. If you really stretch a rubber band for a locking stow, the amount of extra force required to break it may be quite small - this means bag dump is more likely in my opinion. I make my own tube stows from the bulk silicone tubing you can find in the fishing/sporting goods section of any department store (really cheap per foot). Use a pair of needlenose pliers to turn one end over about 5mm. Insert the closed pliers into the other end and open the pliers to expand the tubing. Now take a pair of hemostats (sp?) or similar instrument used for other purposes to grab the turned over end of the tubing and insert it into the opened end. Carefully slide the tubing off the pliers and you're done. No need to glue anything. If using bands is so important to avoid baglocks, why don't reserve freebags use them anymore (besides some racers?) I use tube stows for the middle 2 of my 4 locking stows. I find that they are not easy to use when they need to be really small, and so I use rubber bands for the rest I'll take risk from the strength of a tube stow over the risk of the lack of strength of a band on the crucial locking stows anyday. 9. It doesn't matter if you use large bands for the locking stows and small bands for the others. Or if you use large bands only on the locking stows that get stretched more and small bands on the other locking stows. What matters is to have the proper holding/retention force. 13. In Reply To -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If loose stows cause hard openings, then why doesn't no-stow d-bags/free-bags cause hard openings? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Free-bags have locking stows! You must make sure that the locking stows are secure and that the bands are fairly new. If they are not then you may get line dump. It does happen, and it hurts. Don’t take my word for it. Read this from PD. >>>>>>> Of course he knows that free bags have locking stows. He was refering to the non-locking 'stows' on the new bags that don't use actual 'stows' The point he was making is that only the bag locking 'stows' or whatever 'stow' equivalent mechanism is used to lock the bag is important. The other 'stows' are only there to keep things orderly, not to avoid a hard opening. 14. No, driving an old car is not likely to hurt you unless you hit something, and old cars can be a lot of fun without much risk of it hurting you. What characteristic of a round canopy will be so great except for the nostalgia itself. I watched someone make their first round jump this summer (not a heavy guy either) and he really slammed in. It just reminded me of how a little nostalgia can hurt a lot. I've had my share of stand-ups under them, and sometimes they decide to oscillate. And I'll say it again, the reserves on most 'nostalgia' rigs are not going to set you down lightly. 15. You're much better off watching other people do it. I have about 40 jumps on rounds, and nostalgia is not all that it is cracked up to be. Just try to think what ~15 feet per second vertical speed might feel like. Sure I have stood up many T-10 and PC landings, but many others hurt like hell. I want to do this for a long time. Also, if you think the main might hurt you on landing, what about the tiny hi-porosity reserve that is usually part of the deal with nostalgia gear? Would you like the thought of landing that? I always dreaded that possibility. An old Stingray is high performance. An old round is not. Not a good analogy in my opinion. 18. If the brake setting 'loop' gets past the grommet on the toggle handle, it will tighten up below the grommet - you won't be able to get it to go back over while there is tension on it. 19. Another point, look at method 1 closely. The nose of the toggle is inserted much too far. A little bit more would put it past the grommet and you would not be able to release it. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=10193; This is not what I expected from a mfg'r. 21. I think that both of the Sunpath recommended methods suck. They leave you quite vulnerable to placing your hand/finger through the excess 'loop' or pulling the toggle through the loop (if the stowed line becomes a little loose it opens up a loop). There is not much to prevent the excess from becoming loose. When the excess is kept above the toggle 'handle' and secured by the nose of the toggle & keeper, the loop is away from your hands and can't become looser unless the nose comes out of the keeper. In my opinion this is undeniably much more secure. I think there is no good reason to have the excess routed in the region of the toggle handle. I put mine through the loop of the slink, not the loop of the riser, then use the nose to secure it. My risers are the wide type, and my slink tabs are very well 'set' into the riser without tacking - it is very hard to get them to move if I try on purpose. From what I've observed mini risers don't hold the slink tab in place nearly as well without tacking. I also like the method suggested by Aggie, wrapping it around the entire riser and secured by the nose of the toggle. Both of these method keep the excess away from your hands, and if the excess loop is tight enough it should not be possible for a floating toggle handle (bottom part-mine is velcro'd) to go through the excess loop. I am surprised by what I consider to be poor methods recommended by Sunpath. Of all the threads on this forum, I think this is one of the most important and interesting subjects. Obviously many have had some trouble and at least one death has resulted from this type of failure. Of course I want to know of all the failure modes for the methods that I prefer, so what do you think.
