Is that canopy really taking that long to open? What kind of altimeter do you use? Using 3500 feet as an example: Are letting go of the pilot chute at 3500 feet or are you waving off at 3500 feet and then pulling? My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

What size and type of canopy should be my next one?
hookitt replied to Newbie's topic in Safety and Training
Demo a canopy similar to what you have in the 170 range. Something like a Sabre 2 or a Pilot. It will require smoother control inputs since it will be more responsive. You may notice that when you fly your regular canopy, it will be easier after you try something smaller. Figure out what you like and order it. It's a reasonable downsize at this stage of the game. Keep practicing on the one you have til you get the new one(not that you would have a choice). Be sure you can perform the billvon checklist and have fun. Be sure to make landing decisions up high, which is nothing different than you're doing now. Good luck My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto -

Thanks, I appreciate that. Ok, I'll try to be more clear. I understand your intent. RSL's have saved lives. In fact a properly installed and attached RSL would have changed the outcome, in the death of my friend Kevin Clements. But that said, unstable reserve deployments have left no outs remaining. I'm torn sometimes whether to recommend an RSL or not however, for the most part, I'm an advocate of the RSL. I have to be an advocate because the fact that Kevin would be alive if he had one. He screwed up and didn't get his reserve out. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Here's a quote from my post a few up from this one. The part where a forced unstable reserve deployment did cost his life matches perfectly with ... Well, here's the catch 22 Brett. A properly installed reserve static line did not cause the initial problem but the death was an end result from a chain of events. The root cause... He pulled the cutaway during a PRCP. The end result was caused by the final link of a properly installed RSL doing it's job. Relax a little bit. Your points are fine without asking to be banned. I'm saving screen shots this time though. That person did not do things right since he pulled the cutaway first but it still stands that a main was cutaway and a forced unstable reserve deployment did cost his life. Sucks My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Facts are facts; RSL's can save lives. RSL's do not cost lives.Quote But they can... and sometimes do Read that post and This from the same thread. Look at the date of this incident. Do not say things so matter of factly when clearly you are not correct. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Head down AFF... already took enough AFF student's on head downs Who the heck would say such a thing? How do you know it was safe manner? You don't know me very well As far as freeflying in AFF? good luck. I'll let a student leave the back to earth but I'm not taking a student on an intentional head down. That's simply dumb. Though I've taken plenty of them after AFF was finished with Mad briefings. Where are getting the part that I want people not to do something? Providing limited information on the internet as you have been, doesn't increase body awareness. A new skydiver will smile just as big if you have them grab the step on the way out and do 15 flips in a row. Make sure your rig is freefly friendly.

Just wait till your first real spinner. Epecially one that flings you in to line twists and then starts spiraling. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

I read your post very clearly. I don't want to hinder people from flying any way they wish to fly. Exactly the opposite. Head down is just a position. People think they nail a position... and do it 100 times and think they can freefly yet they can't do any form of layouts, spins stand up daffies, walking on air...etc. Come on.. do something!!! Go for the head down thing it's fun. Flip right back over to the feet... do a back flip.. pop on to your head.. then back over to your feet.. spin around a few times... Get it? Otherwise you've described the perfect backslide. I'm far from a hindrance, I encourage and suggest this stuff all the time. When I started skydiving there was this cool calendar picture of a guy doing a standup with clouds in the background.... (Years later I met him, Shoobi Knutson, and he taught me lots about rigging) so by jump number 8.. the first one off student status... the word unstable had a whole new meaning. Wow... By jump number 20, I had it. It was probably backsliding but heck, it was beyond a doubt a stand up. If you want to learn body awareness... a stagnant position isn't the key. Be dynamic and fluid in your movements. There was a guy that did a bunch of freestyle at the DZ at the time so also by jump 20, multiple back layouts were part of the game. Think about this .. Lay on your belly and put the top of your head toward the ground and lean forward You can see the horizon sitting there all nice and smooth just like you described.. .and it's upside down. Are you in a head down? No you are not. Time and again, I watch people just go out and "sit" How many countless videos of people simply sitting their doing nothing are there? Try recommending stand-up’s, spins ... multiple layout back flips, stuff like that. That same grin will be there, and LOTS more will be learned. Point the feet down, point the feet up.. repeat every few seconds. Basically it's like stomping on the ground (actually the air) then crouching then pushing the feet to the sky with the same amount of energy.. Keep it up ... but honestly you did describe exactly how most people will do their first major head down backslide... hopefully off the line of flight. Years ago, armed with no real suggestions but try it .... exactly how you described ... I did... the after I opened 2 instructors from an AFF jump passed me on either side. Woops.. Wasn’t quite head down.... see what I'm getting at? My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

New brake lengths on my Sabre 170 - throwing off my landings.
hookitt replied to mdrejhon's topic in Safety and Training
Don't shorten them just yet. Fly the canopy and make sure there's play in the lines. You should have to pull the toggles down several inches before the tail deflects. If it's too many inches, it can be shortened. Here's how I set up spetra brakelines. Go at least 2 inches longer than factory. Create a one inch loop for the toggle, finger trap it and stitch in place. Don't make any knots. If it's too long at first, simply figure 8 the loop through the grommet and around the sides a couple times, the pull the tail of the toggle through the loop. As the brake line shrinks, just undo one of the figure 8's. Hopefully that makes sense in text. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto -

Wow ... I read that whole post. SOOooo ... in short.. the brake lines are longer and you aren't used to it yet. And the question is: How do you get used to longer brake lines? Make several more skydives and don't think so hard. Once someone has the book smarts, it's time to let the physical part of your intelligence kick in. Does that matter? Most production sewers aren't riggers anyway especially canopy builders. Hardware is hardware. The people at DJ associates are metal workers. Canopies are fabric cut out from a predetermined pattern then sewn in a specific manner. Containers are also cut out from a predetermined pattern and sewn together in a specific manner. "Rosa from Salinas" can out sew almost every master rigger on the planet, so as long as the designer shows her how to put it together, you would never know that the person has never made a skydive. Make sense? My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Do you mean the Sabre 150? It's the only one I noticed from the UK on the first page. If it is one of the harder opening Sabres it can be tamed easily with a different slider or a slider pocket. If it actually does open fast, then it should have been fixed long ago starting with you. You sold it to someone knowing it was a fast opening canopy. Do you expect the next owner to do anything different? My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Pretty Princess is not really a demotion. For one, you get to be treated like a princess, get to play as much as you want minus a few PR events.
