I found a few other Kentucky Laws in the same league as this one: Kentucky statute says: "No female shall appear in a bathing suit on any highway within this state unless she is escorted by at least two officers or unless she be armed with a club." Later, an amendment proposed: "The provisions of this statute shall not apply to any female weighing less than sixty pounds nor exceeding 200 pounds; nor shall it apply to female horses." In Lexington, Kentucky, it's illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your pocket. Frankfort, Kentucky, makes it against the law to shoot off a policeman's tie. I know for a fact that there's not a website operator on the planet who doesn't go to bed at night worried sick about what law they're passing in Kentucky tomorrow. Though experiment: Umm... oooh look! Something shiny! Safe swoops Sangiro

why are professional PHOTOGraphers excluded from a video contest? i make my living off still images, but suck at making videos.. why should i be excluded because i know how to use a camera? You should not be. That was never the intention. I suspect that double exclusion slipped in because these rules were adapted from a previous photography competition. I will amend that to exclude only professional videographers. Safe swoops Sangiro

The following scam has been reported: Click here to read more about these kind of scams. Remember: DO NOT do business with anyone who offers to send you payment for a higher amount than your selling price with the understanding that you'll send back the balance. Be suspicious of anyone claiming to be acting on behalf of a "client" or another "customer". Be suspicious of anyone claiming to be from Nigeria or West Africa If you agree to accept a check payment, then do not send anything, gear or "change" before the check cleared. And be careful, if you manage to clear a fraudulent check then you may be liable for the damages if the bank finds out later. Make sure your bank authenticates the check. If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is.This username has been disabled. Safe swoops Sangiro -

Mike, This is the second time that I see you pontificating about something as if it were fact when it's not. Most of what you write above is not just wrong, it's also annoying because you actually try to make it sound like you know what you're talking about - and you don't. That is plain wrong, almost a bit silly. I don't think there are many owners of online communities who actually think there's any truth to this statement. History has proven this to be false over and over again. NOT enforcing a standard is what kills online communities. Please go visit what's left of rec.skydiving to see your statement in action. That is also not true. I have long come to accept that you can not please everyone. Somebody will be driven away. I guess you and I just value two different groups. I'm comfortable with those users who are currently being "driven away" by moderator action. I would not be happy with the much larger group who'd be leaving if there were no actions. I can assure you, I get a LOT more feedback than you do about the impact of moderator behaviour. I also get a LOT of feedback when moderators don't act. I have a pretty good understanding of the relative size of the two groups. NOT driving the loud obnoxious poster away is what poisons a community. It's a sign of mediocrity and it alienates the good people - the ones you actually want to keep around. Really? There is nothing in the current cycle that I have not seen many times before over the last 14 years. You feel uncomfortable because we made a deliberate decision to stop certain behavior because it's driving users who we'd like to see here away. So yes, from time to time the moderators and I will dig in our heels against certain behavior and things will feel a bit unstable for those who've been standing on that platform. It's happened many times before, there's nothing new about that. Stick around, you’re going to see it happen again in the future I suspect. Wow, putting aside the attempt at being insulting, I'm amazed that you actually think you know what I've been "forgetting". Your statement is based on a false assumption. The assumption that all user contributions actually create 'economic value'. That's unfortunately not the case and in most cases it's quite the opposite. In this business the most difficult site to sell ad space on is one filled with user generated content. Very few advertisers are willing to see their brands displayed next to a thread full of profanities, pornographic images and the likes. Some advertisers will flat-out refuse any advertising on your site if the majority of content is user generated. Good posts create economic value. Just posting can do the opposite. Bad posts drive away investment. Your statement is simply not accurate. That statement is also wrong. These forums are free. You don't pay a penny to post here and you are here subject to my TOS. If you don't like them, you are welcome to leave. If you don't stick to them, I will kick you out of here in no time. You can scream "But I'm a customer!" at the top of your lungs on your way to the door and see if it stops me. You are a contributor and a guest. You may not like that mantra, but it is unfortunately true. We will treat you with the same respect you show us and the other users on here. Stick to a few simple rules and you will have a great time on here for many many years to come. Really? You say that with so much authority. What are the other "stages" that online communities will go through as they grow? No it doesn't take a brave site owner, it takes a stupid one to do what you suggest. It has been proven over and over again that once a boundary of what's acceptable has been pushed back on an online forum users will not pull it to it's original position again. If we decided to allow the posting of pornographic images or allow advertising in the forums, users will not step back from there again. By all means, set up a forum (I'm surprised you don't have one with all your knowledge!) and try this experiment. By the time you figure out that users will not stop posting porn, the boundary will simply get moved out further, you will have joined a great multitude of online forums that die exactly the same death. There's almost not a single sentence in your post that is not plain wrong, false or misleading. I suspect there are users in this forum who is going to continue to feel uncomfortable for a while. I'm OK with that. The message is simple: we want to create an environment that's open and inviting to everyone. If you disrespect myself, the moderators and the few rules we asked you to stick to... chances are we're going to return the favor. I do appreciate your concern about the longevity of these forums. I'm very comfortable with the way it's going and how the moderators are doing their job. Time will tell whether you or I have a better understanding of what kills online communities and what keeps them alive. In the meantime, have some fun while you wait.

Only YouTube at this stage... but we're working on importing from other video hosting services as well. Safe swoops Sangiro

Yes that's probably an encoding issue. We generate a flash file from you original video. On your PC and at skydiving movies you view the file in it's original format. You can download your original file here as well by clicking on the "Download:" button under your video. I suggest try uploading a higher resolution version of your video. We've learned that there's a direct relations hip between the quality of the original material that you feed the flash converter and the final flash file. Safe swoops Sangiro

In most cases your video will be reviewed and approved within 24 hours. There's a video of yours that's been on there for quite a few days... is that the one you're referring to? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/videos/search.cgi?query=&LinkOwner=evilivan&LinkOwner-opt=%3D TIP: When in the video section of the site, in the secondary light blue navigation bar at the top of the page there's a link called "My Videos" second from the left. Click on that to see all the videos that you've uploaded that's been approved.

In a tandem operation, the pilot fails to properly release the drogue. At about 1000 ft, he release the passenger handle, and main start to open, but not completely. The pair have a very hard landing, enough to kill them instantanealy. No AAD, no Audible

Question: How can I see the current entries? Answer: There are a few ways to jump to a list of the videos that has been submitted to the competition: Find the "tag cloud" on the video section main page and look for the videocontest01 tag. Click on that. Also on the main video page. In the contest announcement at the top of the page there's a link to "Check out the Entries" Or just click here. Safe swoops Sangiro
-
Absolutely. If the response to this contest is good we'll expand on this, find some cool prizes and maybe focus specific competitions around topics like freeflying, swooping, emergencies, bloopers.... Lot's of things we can do. For now I'm excited to see what you guys can cook up. Safe swoops Sangiro

Question: How do I tag my video correctly? Answer: Make sure you enter videocontest01 in the tag field at the bottom of the form when you submit your video * Do NOT enter videocontest01 in the "Clip Title" field. Give your clip a cool title. * Do NOT enter videocontest01 in the "Description" field. Tell us something about the clip. * Take a look at the attachment below for the appropriate place to enter your tag. Remember, you video will not be eligible if not tagged correctly. I have added some tags to videos where the tag was entered in the wrong field. You can of course add other tags to your video as well. Look at the attachment again. Next to the tags entry field you'll see a little [+] graphic. Click on that to open another field. Enter a single tag, word or phrase, per field. You can continue to click [+] to add as many tage as you want. Have fun!
-
Question: Can I enter a video that I've already uploaded? Answer: Absolutely. Go to your video. Click on the "Add tags" link under the video and tag your video with: videocontest01 If it's in our video section and it has that tag, then it's in the run!

Heya all, The first Dropzone.com Amateur Skydiving Video Contest is now open for business! Grab some footage, mix in your tunes and edit your way to glory. The winner of our video competition will walk away with a Sony HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i 2.1 Megapixel Handycam Camcorder. To get in on the action simply shoot some film of you or your mates jumping from a plane doing a few tricks. Make sure it doesn't suck. Edit it into a smoking hot 2-5 minute skydiving video, tag it and submit it to the competition. That's it, you're on your way to fame and glory. Norman Kent, Joe Jennings, Douglas Spotted Eagle and I will pick the winners. They actually know something about freefall videography - I'm just in it for the bribes! More information, rules and how to enter Have fun!

So no real-world examples to substantiate your posts then either? So what did we learn? Is there money to be made in sueing a moderator? Safe swoops Sangiro
-
Of course not. Safe swoops Sangiro

With all due respect, the only straw man in this thread is your hypothetical question posts about how moderators can lose their retirement funds and the pennies they’ve set aside to send their kids to college. Maybe you can put some meat on the bones of that creature and give us an example or two in case law where that has happened to volunteer moderators? Or are you saying we're breaking new ground here and until this forum, nobody has ever thought of sueing a moderator? Safe swoops Sangiro
-
That's what I understood. So can you name some other message boards you use? I'd love to see what their rules look like and maybe chat to their admins to find out how they do it. Safe swoops Sangiro
-
Really? Can you name some of the other forums you use here? I would love check them out. Safe swoops Sangiro

My grandfather used to say: "With a little force you can snap your finger off in your ass." Just because you can do something doesn't mean it’s a good idea nor that it will always serve you well. You continue to use this site and forum subject to our TOS. Safe swoops Sangiro
