Thanks a lot. I'm essentially going to spend the whole jump (dumping at 13k) checking the flare and front riser turns (monitoring the alti to see what I'm losing). On final, I'll probably front riser and only get through about 2/3 of the "power band", so as to have forward speed, but not exactly a swoop, for a straight-in landing without bringing it to a halt. My Sabre 120 drops about 350 feet in a 4 1/2 second riser turn before the riser pressure goes way up. I know that there is a big difference between these two canopies. I was just trying to more fully form a hypothesis before the "experiment". "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Threw together a crappy little illustration that details the problem out. Definitely good to have slack in your bridle around your pin... whether it be a skydiving or a BASE rig. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Yeah, that "delta" position prevents you from going head low on your exit and sets you up for a track. I do it for a sec out of the plane, too, on my non-WS dives (which are always tracking dives or hop and pops). "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

I may be talking out my ass here, but... I'd say go with the one with which you are most comfortable and current. I'd imagine that you can get the S3 to perform better in BASE, as you would in the air, but if you've only put in ten - twenty S3 flights and are still feeling it out, but have 100+ GTi flights, I'd say BASE the GTi until you've got the S3 nailed. If you haven't flown the S3, know that it is an entirely different beast than the GTi. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

So is that the Vagina 1 or the Vagina 2? They all start to look the same after awhile. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Yeah, I'm definitely not hooking it right down to the basement on the first one. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Crossfire (1) 109 loaded at 1.7. Flying it tomorrow. Trying to mentally prepare a bit. < 1,000 MSL, 75 degrees tomorrow. 650 - 700 ft for 5 seconds in a slow front riser carve? "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Ah, yes. I second that, and I keep forgetting to inform others that are starting in it that your legs straps need to fit the same on each leg. Most people without a flight cannot fathom how different wingsuit flying is from skydiving, and unfortunately do not make the biggest effort to tighten down their gear. Another recommendation, if not requirement, is the pre-wingsuit tracking dive. I did 25 of these before my first wingsuit flight, and the suit still took me by surprise. I strongly recommend at least five to ten mock-wingsuit tracking dives within two weeks of your first flight. No matter how excited you are to fly that new or borrowed suit for your first flight, do a solo wingsuit-style tracking dive immediately before you put the suit on. Hmmm... that's odd. The only way that I've seen really to hit three digits is to dive it. You might have your arms too far back... like sort of behind and above you, while keeping your tail big. That's a guaranteed dive. Sort of hard to tell just from the charts. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Hey, Andy! What's up? Very, very nice score. That man was made of steel. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Welcome to the flock! I'm assuming that you are exiting facing the plane with your legs big and your arms small. This gets you level when jumping from a tailgate, but if you don't get your arms big the moment you're level, you will get into a dive that takes a bit to get out of. If you are exiting facing the tail, do a gainer exit, rather than dive out, as that, too, will lock you into a dive. It looks like you need to just get bigger in general. Get your limbs way out there, roll your shoulders forwards, and d-arch just a tad. Keep your horizontal profile as slim as possible. I also recommend wearing your ProTrack in your front pants pocket to get a smoother, more accurate chart. Good luck! You'll get it. (Edited for spelling) "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Just noticed this post. Nope, no Rantoul. "Maybe next year". Money/vacation time just isn't there. The S3 is a lovely beast. Unfortunately, after eleven jumps, the weather started to suck and it has stayed that way, so it's been hop and pops like crazy. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

They are selling the SkyRay. You have to have about $2,800, 500 jumps, and probably something arranged with your DZ/S&TA to fly it. Just shoot them an e-mail. I would imagine that tracking board shouldn't be touched until a good number of skysurfs have been made on both the little and then the bigger boards. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Fourth post in row! But I just wanted to comment that right now the BirdMan article is PopSci.com's #1 most printed article. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -

OK, so really trying to interpret what they're saying is that, based on wing loading, you'd have to travel 90 MPH forwards to hit 0 MPH down (or a fall rate suitable for landing). A) I don't think that's true (it'd probably need to be faster) and B) they aren't taking swooping into consideration. The slowest I've ever fallen was also probably the slowest I've ever moved forwards in a wingsuit (after a big swoop). "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -
Here's me doing a, get this, straight-in landing! In my GTi. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Buffeting is mainly going to happen when your arm wings are disproportionate to your tail. In the GTi, your stance should be about double the width of your body. Legs straight toes pointed. Arms should should be out far, elbows as far towards your head and away from you as possible. Shoulders should be rolled forwards. Give yourself a slight d-arch. As you really start to hit it, you might get "speed wobbles". Just relax and push your hips down until the oscillation ends, then give it another go. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Oops! Just bought the mag, and in one of the diagrams, it says that the minimum speed is 90 MPH. Did they maybe mean maximum 90 MPH (forwards)? The context would have me believe they meant fall rate. Great article, nonetheless. And that bastard at MIT can kiss my ass. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -

For those who, like me, are fans of the type of music on epitonic.com, but, like me, get frustrated with the difficulty of hunting down and purchasing the stuff, there's a new site at http://www.oebase.com. I'm frickin' psyched. It basically has all the music I like to listen to, a much better way of listening to music than epitonic's "Black Box", and anything you want, you can buy right there. Good crap. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

swooping qualifier at skydive oregon question
ManBird replied to superstu's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Correction. The skills camp is $199. I think they lowered the price, because the registration fee is now $149, and I wouldn't just arbitrarily pick $399. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -
Right, I'm not blaming the canopy at all. The line twist was the result of poor body position. It's the severity of the line twist I'm addressing. My Sabre 120 flies straight in line twists. A loaded Stiletto often spins due to line twists. When first jumping the wingsuit, you're more apt to have a poor body position on deployment, thus giving you line twists. I have all the mods Kim mentioned, and they are highly recommended. There was a noticeable difference between what happened after deployment in my unmodded Racer Elite and my fully modded Wings.
